  1. AQ and Servers on World of Queuecraft · · Score: 0

I regularly deal with the prime-time queues of 300-400. I just get home from work, log on, and go make and eat dinner. I'm much more frustrated with the lag issues--we've gone into Blackwing Lair many times, only to fight the first boss in Matrix-like "Bullet time." It's simply not that fun to play a game when you can't actually do what the game intends you to be able to do. Another interesting note--we opened the AQ gates this weekend, at 3am on Sunday. The server crashed 8 times during the opening and twice when the 10-hour event ended. Clearly getting back on wasn't a problem at 3am, but having a server go down like that just speaks poorly to some design choices.

  2. Re:I worked for the government... on Overwhelming Bureaucracy in the IT Department? · · Score: 0

I too worked for the government. The National Park Service, to be exact, and we were not nearly so lucky. We had our internet access cut off for a few months by that federal judge for security breaches. We had the blaster worm take down the entire park (one of the top-5 most visited). In the summer of 2004. And we were down for three weeks. Requests to install software were still not fulfilled after 6 months, when my job ended. (just trying to upgrade one computer to the standard version of Office) I ended up doing what a few other people suggested above--I just built a network to do what I needed to do, and we had to dial in to access the main network. What an ugly mess.

I would assume that you mean the iMac Core Duo, as opposed to the Dore Duo?

  4. The best staff meetings... on Meetings are Bad For You · · Score: 1

At one previous job, we were required to have weekly staff meetings. So we did. At 4:30 on Fridays, at the nearest bar. I recommend it. There's nothing like a few beers to make a meeting go by a little easier.
