  1. Re:No More Sugar! on An Energy Drinks Roundup? · · Score: 1

This is really a rather pedantic point, but...

Yes, caffeine is an adenosine agonist, and thus it can increase the frequency of neural firing. But that's not the same as increasing the speed of neural signals. The nerve signals move at the same speed, but there are just more of them.

Speeds up your nerve signals? Nerve signals can't be accelerated by an exogenous substance; the speed of neural transmission is governed by the physical properties of axons (their diameter, length, etc) and remains relatively constant within particular neurons. There can be a slight effect if the temperature is changed, but this is more of a laboratory phenomenon than something you might find in a warm-blooded primate brain.

  3. A succinct book on the subject on What Should People Understand About Computers? · · Score: 1

The book "Computer Science: An Overview" by J. Glenn Brookshear provides a good introduction to most aspects of computers and their use, without getting too technical or too vague. Some of the topics aren't really relevant to most users, and reading this book won't help most people know how to use their machine any more effectively. But for the person somewhat interested in what goes on in a computer and why, this book provides a solid grounding of what most computer people are talking about.
