I posted earlier about copying DVD's, but the main reason I do it now is because of all the DRM they are incorporating onto the media now. For instance, my kids like to watch movies, but since I do not care for most of their shows, I have them watch their movies in another room (on the crappy DVD player).
I have since discovered that copying the DVD fixes ALL the problems of prohibitive to the point of defective DRM on DVD's. Disney is the worst. It was tragic when my daughter could not watch CINDERELLA 3 of ALL movies. She even begged me to fix the movie so she could watch it. Imagine me putting Cinderella 3 or Bridge to Tarabithia on my 50" Pioneer plasma (OH THE HUMANITY).
Like anybody would want to rip crappy kiddie cartoons (oh, I guess I do for the kiddies).
Sorry fellers, I do not like compressed codecs that downconvert my audio to two channel audio SO..... I rent the movies from Blockbuster online then take them back to the store and get three more and at the same time 3 more ship, plus I get two movies for free every month. I get about 20 movies per month and I rip them onto my media server uncpomressed using anydvd and clonedvd. In the words of the great Darth Vader "All too easy!"
I have about 100 movies on my server right now and if I watch a movie and dont like it, I delete it. Otherwise, on the server it stays unless I burn it or cmpress it for mobile purposes. It is a little archaic, but I just don't trust file sharing and torrents anymore, and I refuse to watch movies with 2-channel audio on my THX HT system.
The IT career that generates revenue (and not expense) and the IT career field that requires client interaction. I work in a disaster recovery center and boy are we raking it in. Plus I get to build, restore, administer, develope, on all kinds of OS'es, PLatforms, Databases, networks, etc. I also get invaluable experience in networking with switches, routers, and VPN appliances. This is all to support clients willing to pay dollars for business continuity and it is FUN, because every day is a new adventure.
That's funny, I too don't recall DVD's being "protected" as I find I have NOOOO problems "backing-up" my DVD collection. I personally have thought 2-channel audio should be given away for free and music should be migrated to multi-channel. SACD sux because you have to buy new hardware. DVD-A sux because it isn't fully suppported by DVD players and thus, requires different hardware. The warner DVD stuff- not that I like. I have about 5 machines in my house that can play DVD's. I have a mobile DVD player in my car so, hmm, covered there and oh! I have a creative MP3 player. As long as the iTunes CRAP comes in mp3 format, I may be covered there. If not, there is always the internet. I have NEVER had a problem finding the song I want. Besides, almost any program can rip a multi-channel DVD into 2 channel audio.
I still think the two channel format for digital music should die. I think the RIAA should encourage usage of two channel downloads for free and switch to 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 or whatever. Sound is the first thing to truely be 3 dimensional and yet, they refuse to capitalize on that. Every DVD out there can downmix audio to two channels if needed.
