You do realize ALL linux distros have this right? Anyway the gui tools are only acting as a frontend to init.d, and while I will agree X11 has no place on a running server, it does make the initial configuration easier for certain things. It's trivial to set the default runlevel to 3 once everything is set up properly. Do all linux distros use/sbin/runscript script interpreter to run its/etc/init.d system startup scripts? Do all linux distros use/etc/conf.d files to configure these services?
Yeah sucking up to the minority...why? their votes don't get them elected. But it WILL get them elected. The two major parties are only a few percentage points away from each other in the polls. Nearly all the voters are rusted on to their political party of choice. Only a few percentage points will win the election for either party. The christians are the obvious choice. Get their ministers, priests, gurus on your side and they'll proselytise your cause from the pulpit to their "flock".
Once again from the country with the highest alcohol related brain damage comes a solution that won't work, and...is it me or does Australia seem to be moving towards the harshest big brother state in the world? Apparantly parents are so detached from the actual process of raising a child that this seems like a good solution. Fair go mate. That's a bit harsh.
What's happening in Australia is an election. Both sides of government are sucking up to the christian community in order to win over their votes. Christians (practising and devout) are still a significant minority in this country.
The idea is stupid and of course us poor taxpayers will pay the bill. But it might sway the christian vote, and with an election due in the next few months all they have to do is appear to do something, not actually solve the problem.
The biggest problem we have is that both the Opposition and the Government are of the same mind on this issue. Neither party really cares about truth or freedom or even protecting the children (god help us). All that matters is to win the next election.
We may as well give ourselves up to Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton and cut out the middle man.
I find configuring Apache 2.2 a pain and I know most configuration options by heart! I actually find it easier to configure than 1.x
PHP and a DB persistence layer should get moving too. The standard php-mysql is just not going to cut it. It doesn't even support prepared statements. If anything is behind Rails' success, this is. I use apache/perl/postgresql. It precompiles all the perl modules and precompiles perl scripts. Perl::DBI handles persistent database connections and prepared statements.
If the tools aren't adequate there's always other tools out there to use.
For instance, you tell young people that over 10% of schizophrenia cases in the UK, IIRC, are related to marihuana consumption. So, nearly all schizophrenia cases in the UK are unrelated to marijuana consumption.
To drag it back on topic, though: IIRC what got the brits with their panties in a knot about extreme porn, was a case where one deranged guy watched a bunch of snuff movies, then went and strangled a woman to death. If you are alluding to Graham Coutts strangling Jane Longhurst, there was no mention of snuff films in the court judgement. Coutts had an asphyxiation fetish for at least ten years before murder. A previous girlfriend gave evidence of his strangling sex play in which she was a willing participant. I doubt the films (which more than likely aren't snuff films) had anything to do with it.
I'd be surprised if you could find evidence that snuff films caused this, or if snuff films even exist.
BTW, "Panties in a knot" is a rather tasteless pun considering how Jane Longhurst died.
I don't think they will require much more than entry level college grads....how hard is it to make sure a reputable AV scanner is installed and a firewall is in place? They didn't say they wouldn't cover fraudulant charges cuz you have a root kit installed that isn't detected by the AV, just that the AV was up to date enough to detect it if possible... So, would your "entry level college grad" be able to check my Linux machines for security? Would they be able to assess my Shorewall firewall, VPN layer over WIFI, my firewalled laptops connected via VPN to the firewalled router, all running Gentoo Linux stable? Would I get a pass or fail? Would they be able to nmap my system to discover open ports and test their security?
I think you might be asking a little too much of the "entry level college grads".
I think I'd also be failed for not having appropriate and up-to-date AV software.
Check out this highly-critical security vulnerability for the xmms music player: Which is why Linux distributions such as Gentoo have dropped xmms from their repositories 6 months ago. I use Amarok.
My XP install has reached its half-life again - which in my experience takes around 16 months - and quite a bit of stuff on it no longer works. Soon, I'll be installing an OS again, and whether that's Windows or a Linux distro is being decided.
You have to re-install every 16 months because your OS stops working? Oh dear!
I installed Gentoo on four of my machines, one of them back in early 2005. I just migrated it over to LVM2 (logical volume manager) so I can now move whole filesystems and partitions from disk to disk while the machine is up and running! I do a twice weekly upgrade that is mostly an automatic process. Everything works, and the functionality improves with every update.
Sometimes things go a bit pear-shaped, but that's all part of the fun!
Gentoo isn't for everyone, but it sure beats having to re-install your OS because it is "tired".
So now in order to switch to Linux I have to buy all new software, AND all new hardware? No, you don't have to buy the software. It is free.
If you are serious about switching to a new operating system then you'll do a little bit of research as to what hardware will work under your new OS, otherwise get someone else to install it for you, as nearly all Windows users do, or don't bother. The choice is yours.
And you wonder why people don't switch? It's a mystery, isn't it? Most people don't even know what an operating system is. Knowing that they actually have a choice is completely beyond them.
If someone doesn't install the OS for them, then they will stick with what is installed by the OEM.
That's the way it is, and I'm happy with it.
You can't have a fair free market on a product that anyone with a cd drive can make perfect dupplications of your product in seconds for next to no cost. An artist spends time and effort learning how to make their art, then time and effort creating something, then more time, effort, and money to produce it in a way that it can be sold. Then some jackass runs off some copies and undercuts. If an artist spends time and effort learning their art, then they can also spend time and effort performing their art in front of an audience and receiving payment for it. As far as I'm concerned, a recording of a performance is merely advertising, and only worth the media it is recorded on.
