I'd nominate any of several experiments by GI Taylor. I remember a few years ago watching this cool black & white film in which he demonstrated viscosity by stirring two viscous liquids (of different colors), into a spiral, and then un-stirring them back again...
The Zeller algorithm listed doesn't work if you interpret the direction "where all of the arithmetic is done with INTEGERS" literally. Try for example July 2nd 1973. If I treat every calculation (including the divisions) as an integer operation, the algorithm suggests a Saturday, whereas the date is a Monday. Or am I missing something ?
Mitnick says "Probation is not supposed to be punitive". Well what exactly is probation supposed to be ? My understanding is that any convicted criminal on probation gives up certain rights and freedoms that the rest of society continues to enjoy. For example, if you have your driving license suspended, the law is entitled to tell you not to drive (or teach driving I suppose). When Mitnick's probation is over, I would support his right to do whatever he wants, but till then, expecting him not to be able to lecture on the intricacies of his crimes and related topics seems fairly legit...
Much of your cut comes from advertising revenue. You skip the hard work of building a large database (of events or tickets in this case), but still have a lot of click-through to show potential advertisers. Also you get people hooked on your site before your development is finished - I'm sure tickets.com eventually wants to build up the capability that ticketmaster has, but doesn't want to wait that long to develop a customer base.
Ahem - if the collective ego of humanity were at stake, I as a member of that collective, would rather a single representative take on the threatening assailant, than allow the mean of all humanity to do so. As long as we have n>0 humans who can beat DT (or its successors), I think our collective hinny is safe indeed. And we all know there are several GMs out there who would have done pretty well against DT...
