Its no different than crossing the border and having them rifle through your luggage. This isnt really a big deal. And i'd imagine most of us here at /. know a bit more about computers and encryption than customs officials... it cant be that hard to hide stuff from them, assuming you didnt want them looking through your massive porn collection.

But there is something to be said about this. If over the course of time (which already started years ago) MSFT loses the geek crowd, the geeks themselves will be left in the dust as to the new tricks and specifics for fixing windows. How many of you are going to be fluent in Vista a year or two after it is released? Not many, because not many of you are actually going to use it. Soon enough the only geeks left available to help the computer-unsavvy folks with the unavoidable windows problems are the paid "geeks" like geek squad who really dont know what theyre doing anyway. The only reason windows has survived as well as it has to this point is because windows really hasnt changed all that much over the past 6 years. What i predict will happen (and i've seen this happen a number of times already) is that the geeks that are asked to help friends and family will just install Ubuntu. Windows loses in the long run.

The earth is on a cycle, we're just riding it.

The 5th Element review that the news post referenced paints an entirely different picture than "it completely underwhelmed". The review says it was still a damn good picture, it just literally was NOT the best HD could be. That can easily be explained since the original was film, not digital. Other than that? Its still HD, which is a whole lot better than standard definition. I havent read the other two reviews yet, but it doesnt seem like Blu-Ray really flopped like this post makes it sound like it did...

If everyone else is driving 100 and some jackass is in the middle of that driving 70, thats when a pileup happens and the EMT's actually need to show up. Imagine driving down a side road where everyone is going 30-40, and a car is just stopped the middle of the road. Yeah, problems.

Everything you said is true, but seems entirely overblown. Having to 'prove' you've read the FM is something that seems somewhat retarded to get cought up on. If you know how to do something, dont be a bitch about explaining it to someone. Just pass your knowledge along and further mankind. If they are unclear about a particular piece of what you said, then explain that for them.

And for the love of god, do not tell someone to RTFM if you havent read it yourself. Sure, the question at hand may seem like something incredibly simple to you, but chances are the FM will offer no help at all. Linux documention is terrible more times than not. If you havent read the FM, either check it yourself to make sure it says everything they need to know, or politly direct the person to the portion of the FM where it says what you need to know. Or, gasp, copy and paste into your own conversation.

If you dont want to spend the time doing that, or you simply cant spend the time, then dont put yourself in a position where you will have questions asked of you. Dont be an ass about it though. These are all the little things i do for people when they ask me for help. I'm not an ass, i dont just pass them off like they arent worth my time. I go out of my way to help them if i have the time. And i dont do it all the time, i just do it every now and then. I would think if everyone spent a little time every now and then providing polite help like this then we could have a good 24/7 support system that didnt have such a bad rep.

This is all because the FM's are written by the snobs who dont want to tell you what to do in the first place. I have poured over a lot of documentation for how-to-do's in linux, and barely any of them were any help at all. When you ask for help in the community, they bite your head off for being such a newb. Honestly, I think the linux community is worse than a bunch of 15 yr olds playing counterstrike.
