  1. this has to stop on Danish, Western Websites Under Attack · · Score: 5, Interesting

The muslim world HAS to learn to play nicely with the rest of the world or face becoming marginalized. There's only so many times people can read about young girls being gang raped to punish their brother or young girls being forced to stay inside a burning building because they don't have their headgear on... not to mention all of the totally innocent contractors, journalists and students that are murdered for doing their job or even going to school. Where are the women's rights groups?!?!? Where are the "peaceful" muslims?

  2. network overhead?? on Network-Monitoring Data Put to Music · · Score: 1
What kind of overhead do these monitors incur? 20 times a second for *every* server on a network? This sounds like it's a neat use, but is it practical... And what about the human brain's ability to become desensitized to input over time?

  3. this is great, but... on The Road to 100 Gigabit Ethernet · · Score: 1
Current networking technologies are already a lot faster than what is commercially available from the phone and cable companies. It's not going to help you much if you have a 100Gbit NIC but only a 5Mbit internet connection. You're really only going to see this benefit you if you play a lot of games over a LAN or for businesses that need a high bandwidth LAN, IMHO.

DeCSS could also be used for other purposes, some of which might well be illegal; but that's irrelevant, because it has a legitimate application. Otherwise you wouldn't be allowed, amongst many other things, to keep knives in your kitchen lest they be used for stabbing people.

It's not the fact that something has a legitimate purpose, it's the fact that the laws in the U.S. are such that the RIAA is the 800lb gorilla that only wants "licensed" DVD technology. This is why most Linux distro's don't ship DVD decryption libraries - you have to download them separately and there are usually disclaimers on the download sites speaking to the legality of using a non-licensed DVD decryption program in your country. That's what I was referring to.

  5. over money??? on Yahoo Allegedly Sells Reporter Out to Chinese Authorities · · Score: 2, Interesting

I know that I'm totally being an idealist by saying this, but when are people going to stop selling out their brothers and sisters for a few dollars? Is the advertising revenue enough to counter the bad will/karma/fortune/juju? I'm a very firm believer in "reaping what you sow" and it gives me a sick feeling when I keep reading stories about companies repeatedly selling out journalists, demonstrators, activists, students and censoring the speech of others just to make some money. Unfortunately, as we have seen, even the beloved Google has sold out. Is there noone who will stand up to this?!??!?

  6. Re:wtf? on Could Linux Still Go GPL3? · · Score: 1
DRM itself does not help Linux users. Look how we've had an uphill battle to get an open source DVD player... We're relegated to using a legally questionable decss library. So I can see how having an anti-DRM clause might force software vendors to come up with another way of doing some things.

Besides, has DRM ever actually helped anyone other than the RIAA??

  7. wtf? on Could Linux Still Go GPL3? · · Score: 1

Honestly, I'm trying to follow this. What is Linus' beef with GPLv3? Does it matter if there are some anti-drm provisions in the Linux kernel license?

Opera is doing some good things and I've missed having a good version of their browser for my handheld. Hopefully more software like this will spur someone (Sharp, maybe?) to release a great Linux-based hand held. I love my Dell Axim x51v, but I don't love Windows Mobile 2005.

  15. create an "OSS" network on Pay-to Play and the Tiered Internet · · Score: 0

I'm telling you, this tiering of the commercial internet is a very, very bad idea. If this happens you'll see the internet fragment into local public networks similar to the old BBS days or you'll see someone come up with another national public network to compete with the Internet. Either way you'll see the information access divide between the poor and rich grow even larger. Just my 2 cents...

It's interesting to see this follow up to the previous Google censorship article. It reminds me of blind, zealous relgion where if the object of the religion does something wrong the followers will downplay it or find some way to write it off. "It's ok that we do it, but not ok if everyone else does it", and it's for exactly the same reasons, too. Oh well, time to look for another hero, I guess.
