unlike driving a car, the chances of something running in front of you at 30000 feet is pretty slim

  2. Move to New Jersey on Can Cell Phones Ignite Gasoline Vapors? · · Score: 1, Funny

Heck, we're not allowed to pump the gas (and it's still cheaper than most places nearby).

No getting out of the car, no static, no death from fireball.

And I can talk on my cell phone, too.

  3. HP Disk arrays on Hardware Horrors that Firmware Upgrades Would've Fixed? · · Score: 1

This was a combination of user error and firmware issues, but we had a disk array lose its mind (and 30 GB of RAIDed data) once. While the tech shouldn't have turned the array off, if there weren't a firware bug, it would have flushed the cache and we wouldn't have lost the data. I would up spending a weekend flipping bits to get back half the data. Not Happy.

You imply that the "top 500" web site is complete. As of last check, I knew the location of machines that were not on that list, and there must be ones I don't know about.

Just because there is a website devoted to something doesn't make it canonical.

Just one nit: If you're running 120V power through there you're an idiot. However, even doing the math at 240V it doesn't make sense.

Having said that, these machines have their place. Imagine a rack with four of these and two nice disk arrays. A 1 rack, HA server.

How many times must this be said? UNIX != Linux
It's quite true that Linux does not have a central authority governing everything that goes into "the OS" but IBM, Sun, HP, etc. sure do.

    Why is this so difficult?

These kind of rules apply to certain individuals, companies and countries. The US is not one of these. When you reach a certain size/importance level, the rules change. Simple as that.

The only reason people want to pay down the debt is because they would have to pay down their debt. It's a warm-fuzzy thing.

p.s. I'm not saying it's not important, just not as important as some people seem to think.

    What have HP gained?

ans: A stable cheap operating system

HP has their own unix OS - you don't get much cheaper than that

    2) It's ALREADY DONE. They already pay developers

What has the open source movement gained?

    ans: nuffin.

First - why do they owe you anything? Using "your" product helps prove that it's a real product.

Is this a model for future company involvement in Linux/Open source software?

Answer is an exercise for the student

No, answer is for the company involved, in this case HP, who has just also announced the formation (with other companies) of an Open Source lab. They have also recently committed to making linux binaries work on hpux and supporting linux as an OS on hp big iron.

You've chosen the wrong target for your teen angst on this one.
