This was a combination of user error and firmware issues, but we had a disk array lose its mind (and 30 GB of RAIDed data) once. While the tech shouldn't have turned the array off, if there weren't a firware bug, it would have flushed the cache and we wouldn't have lost the data. I would up spending a weekend flipping bits to get back half the data. Not Happy.
You imply that the "top 500" web site is complete. As of last check, I knew the location of machines that were not on that list, and there must be ones I don't know about.
Just because there is a website devoted to something doesn't make it canonical.
The main problem that eloctronic news people are facing is time. In print, they have enough time to double check facts, etc. The electonic media simply don't feel like they have that kind of time.
How many times must this be said? UNIX != Linux
It's quite true that Linux does not have a central authority governing everything that goes into "the OS" but IBM, Sun, HP, etc. sure do.
These kind of rules apply to certain individuals, companies and countries. The US is not one of these. When you reach a certain size/importance level, the rules change. Simple as that.
The only reason people want to pay down the debt is because they would have to pay down their debt. It's a warm-fuzzy thing.
p.s. I'm not saying it's not important, just not as important as some people seem to think.
HP has their own unix OS - you don't get much cheaper than that
What have they saved?
ans: Shitloads of development money
2) It's ALREADY DONE. They already pay developers
What has the open source movement gained?
ans: nuffin.
First - why do they owe you anything? Using "your" product helps prove that it's a real product.
Is this a model for future company involvement in Linux/Open source software?
Answer is an exercise for the student
No, answer is for the company involved, in this case HP, who has just also announced the formation (with other companies) of an Open Source lab. They have also recently committed to making linux binaries work on hpux and supporting linux as an OS on hp big iron.
You've chosen the wrong target for your teen angst on this one.
If you want privacy, bring your own laptop/PDA/notepad.
Even this is not a guarantee. Almost every company has a clause that anything you do while at work belongs to them. So even if you use your own stuff, they may own what you wrote.
Most companies are resonable about this, but they don't have to be.
Once you purchase a copy of an album, it is perfectly legal for you to transfer it to your computer
What makes you think you have these rights? The simple fact is that whatever the law SAYS it what the law IS. If we don't like the law (or parts of it), we should work to get it changed.
I saw in a recent (January) Discover magazine that someone had come up with software to generate 3d images from multiple flat images. The only thing they had used it for was pictures of themselves for IRC. No chance of realtime tat way, but MUCH cheaper andstill pretty cool.
It seems you're missing the point. The Ig Nobel prize is not "honorable recognition." I believe it was given to them not for their beliefs, but their methods.
Not teaching something in science because its a theory rules out just about everything.
unlike driving a car, the chances of something running in front of you at 30000 feet is pretty slim
Heck, we're not allowed to pump the gas (and it's still cheaper than most places nearby).
No getting out of the car, no static, no death from fireball.
And I can talk on my cell phone, too.

Having said that, these machines have their place. Imagine a rack with four of these and two nice disk arrays. A 1 rack, HA server.
It's a footrace Chaos! But it looks like the winner
of the "who will hit the Pacific first" race will be Mir.

Why is this so difficult?

Aren't the SAG awards supposed to be the "awards by your peers" awards?
What would be really interesting would be to see Dynamo running on a Crusoe :)
What are your thoughts on HP making money on samba?
How do you see development changing with a corporation having a vested interest?

No, the sad part is that on /. you have to mention when you're telling the truth.
I'm not making this up!
Perhaps cmdrtaco needs to be moderated down?
