What moron approved this poorly-written and inaccurate story? Oh wait this is Slashdot.....

  2. How does this work? on Details on San Francisco's Free Wifi · · Score: 1

This has been YEARS now they have been talking about this. When will results appear? How do they propose to limit individual WiFi users? It is very vague. Limit you by MAC? A Muni-WiFi is going to have BIG problems with their coverage. I work with a small neighborhood WISP and I know there are certain locations we abandoned trying to cover, because they are already jam-packed with other AP's, cordless phones, baby monitors, and other interference sources. If gov't wanted to REALLY improve internet access for the "common man" they would mandate "naked DSL" offerings, and remove the 57 taxes & fees layered on every bill. Or even subsidize it.

  3. WHEN WILL XP NO LONGER BE AVAILABLE? on Now Is Not the Time for Vista · · Score: 1

I guess the main question is, when ordering company equipment, when will you no longer be able to purchase them with XP? At a certain point I assume Vista will not just be *A* choice, it will be the ONLY choice.

  4. What does "innovate" mean to MS? on Microsoft Research Fights Critics · · Score: 1

I am reminded of a line in Princess Bride:

"You keep using that word. I do not think it means, what you think it means." - Inigo Montoya

The opener clearly attempts to posit that a bunch of VERY BRIGHT MINDS work at MS.

From this most people head down the road of confusing INVENTION with INNOVATION.

    Lets look at dictionary.com:

    verb (used without object)
    1. to introduce something new; make changes in anything established.
    -verb (used with object)
    2. to introduce (something new) for or as if for the first time: to innovate a computer operating system.
    3. Archaic. to alter.

If we assume the very first part of definition 1, it does imply being the same as invention. However in popular usage what innovation generally means is taking 2 existing ideas and combining them. Like putting the idea of email and wireless together to make...presto.... a blackberry. Or taking the idea of "hey let's put a search feature into our desktop". This may be a neat idea and it may be "innovative" but I hardly put it on the scale of say discovering the transistor or the cure for AIDS or something. In practical fact, most "innovators" are just everyday cubicle-workers putting together the building-blocks and there's nothing worth handing out prizes for here.

What was the last great INVENTION of Microsoft, that would be an interesting list.

  5. GREED! on Tech Czar Unimpressed With US IT Workforce · · Score: 3, Insightful

The motivation behind this is: GREED! Big American companies want cheap disposable labor. They have no concern with what long-term effect this has on the middle-class, or on the economy, as long as it keeps propping up those bottom lines and rolling in the bonus and back-dated options. If they really wanted the best that the world has to offer, to be brought here and integrated into the US economy on a permanent basis, these would not be H1-B visas. They would have a program for work-towards-citizenship. Everything else is lies and misdirection.

  6. Secure ATMS? Ha! on An Open Letter To Diebold · · Score: 5, Interesting

What makes you think Diebold ATM units are secure? I had a friend who worked in bank software. He said if you knew half of went what on, you'd keep your money buried in jars.

  7. NO IT IS NOT TIME !!!! on Upgrading Wi-Fi — What, When, and Why · · Score: 1

UPGRADE IF YOU HAVE MONEY TO BURN AND NO BRAINS. The "pre" versions out right now are buggy, and you will have to do it all over again when the real stuff gets finalized. The only point to this is if you are a moran who feels they must stay on the bleeding edge.

    Oh yeah, forgot to add:

Successful employees will also be flexible with working hours, as some of our sub-contractors are in differing countries around the globe. So we expect you to communicate with them during the work-day in India or China or wherever.

We don't actually want to make you a quasi-manager because then we'd have to raise your salary, give you shorter working hours, and pay expenses for 3-martini lunches and golf games. No, no, you don't get to join the club we just want you to CARRY our clubs.
