If you give someone power, they will find a way to use it in a corrupt way to benefit themselves personally.
There is no such thing as a politician that isnt corrupt, there never has been & never will be.
Taking corporate money out may help a little, or might not, because the politicians will always find a way to take bribes. It might just make the practice more secret & even more dangerous.
Maybe a 'list of interests' should be kept, so any personal or party donations are made public & anyone taking secret bribes, gifts, or whatever you want to call it should be banned from politics for life.
Obviously though, the politicians are the only people that have the power to create a law like this, so there is little hope.
The bbc is the copyright holder for those old episodes (if they aren't out of copyright now), and they gave permission for those tapes to be sent back to them. No lawyer could sue for that.
secondly the bbc doesnt sell content, within the uk & its unlikely that newsnight is actually sold to any other broadcasters.
finally, the bbc has invested & continues to invest a lot in their internet presence. they have an excelent website, online radio (with shows archived & available online for the next week). Video on demand, etc should be coming pretty soon. I've not seen a better tv/radio broadcaster's website.
i run them both at home, the xp machine is on slightly slower hardware, with a little less ram (384mb vs 512mb), but still boots quite a bit faster. the hds in both machines are 7200rpm, ibm & seagate, theres little difference in hd speed.
fast(er) booting is one of the features of xp.
if you turn all the themes & stuff off, it runs pretty much as fast as 2000, theres little noticeable difference in speed, but it does use a little more ram. you'd need to have less than a p2/300 with under 128mb ram, to really notice any difference in responsiveness, then it'd be mainly due to the lack of ram.
win2000 is only better because you dont have to mess around turning themes off & stuff.
south korea has a population of 48 million, the 12th highest gdp in the world & high economic growth rates. they also have a lot of technology, which ms would like to run windows.
you're wrong, they've done much worse. heres a few that are proven, but only god knows what they've got away with.
remember DR-DOS? no? know why?
microsoft put a simple check in windows 3.1 that meant it would refuse to run & spit out some cryptic error message if it detected dr-dos. that bit of code was the only thing that stopped windows 3.1 working on dr-dos. by the time it was found & could be proved, digital research were long dead.
they've abused their near monopoly on pc operating systems to put many competing companies out of business, or close to it, simply by making sure their products dont work well on windows. see wordperfect, lotus 1-2-3, etc. Almost every company that has released something new, innovative & popular on windows has had their software cloned, crippled and/or undercut by microsoft.
bundling ie & wmp does seem very minor in comparison to other things they have done. netscape & real have never been much good, they cant really blame ms, because they actually manage to write worse software.
they already have a chinese language version of google.com, relatively uncensored (only us censorship, which applies worldwide), outside china.
but the chinese government blocks it. they have a huge firewall (thanks to cisco), which blocks any website the chinese govt doesnt like, for the whole of china, this includes uncensored google.
if google wants to do business in china, they must obey chinese law & its not up to google to change that law, they simply dont have the power.
hrm, you may be right, its an extremely common myth on the internet (if you are right) tho & doesnt sound like something totally made up. a quick google saarch i just did gave half the links supporting the myth & half dismissing it, I couldnt find a really definitive answer. One site that says its a myth sounded convincing, then it also says microwaves arent radiation, lol.
the version of the 'myth' i read was that the resonant frequency of water is much higher than 2.4ghz, but it does devide by 2.4, so 2.4ghz has a similar, albeit weaker, heating effect on water
none of it really matters for wifi tho, thats not likely to cook you just because the power levels are so low.
yeah, but he'll be replaced by someone with the same policies, so its really no different.
power corrupts.

ok, everywhere except a few mostly ex-colonies & one or two other very sensible countries, got it wrong ;)
portugal also used to drive on the left, until the 1920s, that explains macau
gibralter, ireland, bangladesh and south aftrica drive on the left too, as well as malta & cyprus & many other mainly commonwealth countries.
it seems driving on the right was a french idea.
I'd rather have my right hand on the wheel than the gear stick, and theres the looking behind you while reversing & steering thing too.
its the british that drive on the correct side of the road, everyone else got it wrong.
i think you miss my point.
if this asteroid gets mined, who'll be doing the actual mining?
who'll be going up into space, risking their life?
who'll be building the equipment, spacecraft, etc?
it wont be the fat cat boss that gets the majority of the cash from it.
you realise its the poor that do all the actual work?
the rich just cream off the profits from & take the credit for the labour of the poor.

so what was your point again?
international human rights?
treaties?
we 'won' the war in afghanistan, at least thats what the guberment said, so why are there still pow?
you were lucky, my school had 386s, 25mhz & 33mhz, i think they had 4mb ram. dos 6.2 & windows 3.1
but they were the posh computers, kids studying pure it didnt get to use those. we had acorn a3000's, the pcs were for it & business studies.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acorn_Archimedes
those acorns really sucked, if you ever used one of those, a 386 seems like luxury & 286's look good.
this was 1995-97.
startup times are faster on xp than 2000.

they're going to open the source? great news!!! ;p
but wouldnt that just encourage them to make sure they have a dossier on you?
people here & in america did vote for a near fascist political party, there is/was little alternative.
how much chance do you thibk a poorly funded independent party stands of taking control of government via an election? or even noticed by the media?
if voting changed anything it'd be illegal.
good points there & very true.
but 'wake up'?
what does that mean, i'm awake, i know its happening, but what can be done to stop it?
the techs may laugh behind their backs, but the managers are laughing all the way to the bank.
im glad im not the only person that doesnt want to hand over credit card details & personal information (other than ip) to google
the primary aim of any company is to maximise profits. the best way to maximise profits in the medium to long term is to gain a monopoloy.
all other aims are secondary.
i hope you were joking.

england never had a wild west & we dont want one either.
guns (on their own) dont bring down governments either, especially not small guns.
every iraqi houshold had a gun under saddam, it did nothing to stop that oppressive government.
tony blair never has been & probably never will be a socialist. hes as conservative as the most extreme end of the 'conservative' party.
sorry for the lack of paragraphs, i didnt realise i had html formatting turned on, it'll teach me to use preview in future.

i said a resonant frequency of water, its actually a fraction of the resonant frequency, but it works in a similar way.
but what would we do about godzilla?
