I roll my own when it comes to embedded or specialized tasks. I suppose I forgot to mention that in my previous post.

I did not mean that the kernel needs to run anything and everything at once... I meant that GNU/Linux type OS's can do so much already with the proper software and configuration.

It has never been a one-size fits all which is what Windows is. GNU/Linux is so modular in every aspect its no wonder Windows looks so bulky. ;-)

    Alright. I'm still with you.

Windows is for business and other dumb stuff.
Business: I personally disagree as I've been using Linux for all of my business needs since 2002... but then again that is just me. I am going to assume that the 'other dumb stuff' is video games and malware. I agree on that note... although there are some fun games for Linux available.

Macs are apparently the thing to get for video and graphics work though I strongly disagree.
Yeah... Mac's have their place and they seem to be more media oriented. A good friend of mine is just finishing his last year in school for Video Production and Design (4 year program), so far he has yet to use a Mac. So I agree with you on this point.

And Linux is gonna be for anything with AI! Cuz AI programmers (and their programs) are smart enough to know that paying for an OS is stupid when you don't have to and you can't change much about the OS after you install it. And you don't need your AI creation freezing up while the OS makes a system restore point or crashing randomly (OS X and Windows).
I like to see Linux as an open platform for *any* use. I, personally, use it for everything. From my laptop, to my home PC, to my media center to my embedded linux system in my car.

And in 2009 I hope a giant pengiun robot attacks Microsoft headquarters.
This kind of bothers me, really. Yes, we all know Microsoft is "evil". I've heard it too many times to count. I do not, however, advocate the idea of physically destroying the company. In a sense, we need Microsoft for MANY reasons. Their OS sucks, yes, but the mass amounts of people who use it still don't understand it and manage to break it's brain-dead design. This creates a HUGE market for people to fix these systems and networks. I've been doing it for quite some time (on the side, of course) and sometimes that money is nice. How do you think I was able to afford my media center? My laptop? etc. etc.

I'm not trying to say we should necessarily support a company that has a lot of bad practices, but they create a huge market for us to make money. When they release a new OS, they beef up the minimum requirements for it and in turn brings prices of last gen products down in price for us to use.

    ... yup. :-)

    Bingo.

I own all of my media either in DVD, CD, etc. Keeping it in digital format on my file server is simply for convenience. The two others that are fault tolerant are primarily for my source code and documents for school, pictures, etc. :-)

I recently increased it from 500GB to 2TB (those 500GB drives have really fallen in price!) for my eventual purchase of either an HD-DVD/BluRay drive.

If my Media partition were to die, it's only time lost in the long run. Yes, ripping it all again down the road will be a pain in the ass, but it's not as big of a deal as losing a weeks worth of work, or what-have-you.

I have a similar setup as well... I have a box crammed full of 6 hard drives... 4 x 500GB in RAID 0 as one partition for storing all of my media. The others are 2 x 320GB in RAID 1 with 3 partitions (/, /boot, /data, no swap) for my backup purposes. I use Linux all around, so I just setup NFS Shares & wrote some archival scripts utilizing FAM to simplify it for myself. I know this solution is not for everyone, but it works great for me. I have an automated system monitoring some directories (the portion using FAM) and others require forced updates issued by a command "backup ${BackupDirName}"

I don't feel like coughing out money for a (maybe) 4 pieces of news, and a handful of flyer's tossed in it.

I don't know how it is where you live, and I don't care. The way it is here has degraded to the point where I didn't care to buy the news paper anymore. I don't care if I get regurgitated pieces of news through the internet. The Community Site mentioned in my original post is owned and operating by our local Radio Station... Probably within the top 5 employers in my city. They also own a lot more than a website and a radio station. They have real journalists and work WITH the news paper.

We have a community website that is run by one of the local radio stations... it has fairly "up-to-the-minute" updates and is generally very informative. It's entirely free and funded by advertising from LOCAL businesses. Being a business owner, I've noticed a fairly steady increase in traffic since I've gotten some ads put up.

I've done this. It was the first thing I thought of when I learned how the Wiimotes worked.

    It's actually rather simple...
    1. First you need a sensor bar that is no dependent of your Wii. You can make one or buy one.
    2. You need a bluetooth module
    3. A driver to handle requests for your Wiimote and translate them into mouse movements, etc. Linux, Mac and Windows drivers
    4. (optional) I mapped my buttons to multimedia keys and bound some of them to commands
    5. You need some software. In my case I've written my own called faultBox. I'll be releasing the code to the public probably this spring.
Some more info on faultBox: it is a very simplistic system, actually written in PHP. Now, don't freak out about this... the way it works:
    two scripts: faultbox.d and faultbox.
faultbox.d is the backend that runs a mini web server and launches commands if needed.
faultbox is the interface. I use php-gtk with gtkmozembed set in 100% fullscreen mode. It loads the mini web servers pages onto the display. When a request to view a video file (specially crafted url) it will launch the file in Mplayer in full screen mode. From here I have created a simple skin for Mplayer to be easily usable with a Wiimote.

This is just some information. Please do not use it as a complete guide as it is not. I'm working on a full guide I will be releasing with faultBox.

The problem I could see is that if they release it with no DRM, they think that they will see it up on the net faster... which it may, but a large portion of the movies I download are because I personally cannot or don't have time to remove the CSS/DRM. I only rip them to my system because it plays smoother than right off the disc and I do not own a TV/DVD player. The other portion I download is when the movies don't make themselves to my city in the Theatre... so I download it to see if I like it or not.
