I can confirm this being a member of that 'captive' audience. I would even point to this page for the open math lab hours where they list 200+ linux workstations available for student use.
Seems like a good idea that has the ability to become something really big. Being able to power your PDA, mp3 player, etc all without any batteries does seem kinda cool. A few questions though. Wonder if the 'battery' would be cold to the touch? Would it be appliable to the skin, or under the skin? How far up can this be scaled? I saw the plans for the 3.0v version, how about 9.5?
I really don't understand Panasonic's stance on selling these handhelds to consumers. Why would it cost them any more to allow consumers to buy this thing (not that I want a $1k PDA) Is that the only reason? The fast that no reasonable consumer (and I know we have some of the unreasonable kind here on slashdot) would pay that price when palms, handsprings, etc sell for so much less and are fairly close to being just as durable?

It is about damn time that something happened with that. Can it really be said that NSIs monopoly had ended? Will it end with this lawsuit? I doubt it.
Yes, right. That's exactly how the law works. Would you prefer that certain acts be illegal before a law is passed making it so? Perhaps retroactive laws, which are specifically banned by the US Constitution? Thats not what I was implying. I was more trying (although I failed) to express, just because its not yet illegal does not mean that it is moral or should be done.
Capitalism is all fine and good but an interesting point was brought up a few days ago- if anyone owns personal info it should be the person who's info it is. Thus, we should be the sole license holders of our personal info and advertisors should be paying us if they want to make use of it foe that purpose. They should not have the right to make use of gov't records (in the case of snail mail spam) or info we did not intend to give to them on the web. Of course if you go and fill in forms with correct personal info then you have noone to blame but yourself when you are targetted, by either spam or other unwanted advertisements.
I don't want to talk down our Great American Economic system but some of the things people are apparently willing to do for the almighty buck are getting rediculous. This is one such instance of that and I don't see it getting much better (with or without regulation). Of course this can be always be looked at in another light, that of the American entrepenurial (sic)spirit. If it ain't illegal then it must be legal, right?
I really don't see how cyber squatting comes into play here. Etoy was the first and therefore if anyone is squatting it is Etoys, but Etoys is the major name in this debate so it would seem highly unlikely that they are squatting to gain recognition from etoy.
