    The associated press reports 12 times the national average, and for the area (cold climate = more heating) and size of the home (its four times larger than the national average and acts as an office space as well as home) it is actually on par. He also pays a premium to get his energy from renewable sources like solar, wind, etc...

    I hope the design can be retrofitted into existing turbines, since there are so many deployed now.

    According to the article, it should be possible:

    The US government is my parents. And it's me. And you, my neighbors, that jackass who cut me off while I was driving home. It's about us forcing ourselves to do shit we don't want to do, but should.

    That answer is useless. The question, essentially, is, "Will this help people realize that Writing does not necessarily equal Microsoft Word?"

    The government currently gives out grants and loans for no work whatsoever. This system just changes the basis of disbursement -- merit based instead of need based.

    Exactly which part of the constitution are we deliberately misinterpreting to give the federal government the authority to do this?

    So community service is punishment. Great! That'll teach a lesson you want them to carry through life.

    Community service is something almost nobody wants to do (hence its use as punishment) just like sitting through a boring lecture on molecular structure is something almost nobody wants to do, but we'll all be better off if we just fucking do it, one way or another. And hey some will walk out of that lecture totally stoked and go on to develop some cutting edge medical treatment.

    If someone doesn't want to, you don't make them. Exploration by personal choices allows you to grow as your own person. The only good accomplished by forcing someone into doing it against their will is angst against it; while this doesn't hold true in all cases there's plenty of it.

    Maybe I'm the exception, but I can think of plenty of cases where I was forced to do something I didn't want to do and thankful for it afterward.

    Marriage has worked, and worked extremely well, for all of human civilization.

    Extremely well, huh? No room for improvement in, say, rates of divorce, domestic violence, or child abuse?

    Why do we want to get rid of it?

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only the ballot measures I know of were to change Marriage, not get rid of it.

    Locate all .docs, run them through antiword, grep for words from that critical report, and report back the matches. Less than a minute of Bash scripting.

    Are you serious? You know the average user thinks "Bash" is something you do to the side of your computer when it's not working, right?

    Unless you are coding in something like vi or emacs, I don't use the command line for my source control.

    I use emacs and never have to use the command line either. emacs is an IDE just like any other. It's just not graphical.

    then you can go with an open source flash player that can play an FLV video. JW Player is one that comes to mind, but I know there are other better ones that support h264 and even seeking (albeit in a hackish kind of way).

    Dear Asus,

    The time has come. Drop VGA output and replace with HDMI output. Surely you (and your customers) would love the space savings of an HDMI connector over a VGA connector. As an added bonus, your customers won't be pissed that their laptops have a connector interface that is quickly becoming (already?) obsolete.

    The software repositories are nice in Linux, but I'd wonder how many people would realize they were there, assuming they were new, inexperienced users. I've always thought it would be great idea for Windows to provide something comparable. This exists.
