Read the true story over here.. the only thing with holding Enigma from opening up their sources is.. CVS!

CVS is preventing them from releasing their hardware specs and Linux sources!

Well, if you look at 3D audio, Creative LTD is working together with Loki software to attempt to set a linux 3D/positional audio standard for the hardware manufacturers.
Meanwhile, Aureal says it is up to Creative to get things like EAX to work under Linux.
So, I guess they are working towards 1 standard..
If Creative wouldn't have crasped the OSS concept, they would have never switched to GPL.
This change didn't came over one night ice,
I dunno about other compagnies, but I think the restance against opening up propriety stuff, can only be broken after they've already realized the OSS concept and it's advantages...
And if they realize Linux is going to be mainstream business? Well I guess they do read PC magazines or at least news papers..

I don't agree on this matter, I tried several software decoders and I was very impressed about the Cinematics 99 engine. I was able to get a very crisp and clear and vibrant video play with it on my old Intel 740 and OC-ed Celeron 450(they use some kind of techniek to put a quadrupple buffer into your video memory), not really highend hardware these days and I think under Linux it could even be done better... eg. WinDVD says, they are only a small team of young coders, so that's the only ingredient you'll need...

  9. Yes, way to go Creative... on Creative Labs to open SB Live Drivers · · Score: 5

As you might or might now know, I'm running a
SB Live! under Linux page, I just have some things
    I like to say..
A lot of ppl already know, Creative went a long, long way from releasing a binary only kernel specific driver, developing at a slow speed with loads of bugs, towards finally even having a FAQ and supporting CVS under GPL and supporting
people who wants to make their own driver under Linux. I you look at Creative, at first being not willing to provide 4front with the nessary information, to continue development and also not seeming to understand the need of having the source available or chopping up the driver into a kernel independant part with source
and a binary part for the DSP
(just check my page on the details..)
    that's a big difference...
And Creative also didn't spend much resources
on Linux, because that's not where to money comes
from (We don't buy any Live Ware 3 or whatever upgrades)
But it now seems like Creative fully changed course and is also spending more resources on this thing (also with hiring Jon Taylor, a very good move) they even are working on finding a way
to support 3D audio or EAX, since Aureal thinks,
that's up to Creative, this is a very important step...
I think this move looks very good, also since
Aureal is also working on Linux support,
it really shows that times are changing for Linux
and that even heavy commercial compagnies like
    Creative are realizing this..
This is sure much more than I ever hoped for
and to be honest, after seeing a message that
someone was going to buy a SB Live! because he
saw that there was at least a page that supported
it, was almost a reason for me to dismantle it.
Because I only started this page out of the frustration, not being given any support from Creative (like a FAQ or proper install instructions)..

For years, since using Windows NT, I've been waiting for ide busmastering support for NT... Time has gone by and I also had many mainboards with Intel chipsets (call me stupid). Still, no sign of real busmastering support... Sure, they claim there is some support since service pack 2 (using the dmacheck util), but it's a hoax. Intel won't support it's chipsets under NT and the only alternative is a Intel BM driver provided by Heylard Packard, but with no support at all.. UDMA/33 or UDMA/66 (ata66) support totally lacks under NT also and the HP/Intel drivers won't support ata-pi devices and especially thing like an Iomega zipdrive... Every time I try to copy some files from one ide device to another, the cpu load turns 100% (Celeron 450, 192mb ram. 440bx mobo), this has been like this for years, no matter how fast my processor gets. Also using HPs drivers has always gotten me a lot of BSODs. NT SMP support is great -sure-, maybe just what I need to compensate this devicianty of NT. (sorry for my English) In time, I've tried it with various hd's and a lot of ata-pi cdroms, it just doesn't work. Face it, if you want to run NT stable and fast, you just gotto have high-end SCSI devices who cost a fortune. And what about the long awaited fat32 support, so I don't have to use fat16 with 16kb clusters for my Windows 9x toy os? (Win9x?, be honest, everyone likes to play a RTS game every now and than) NT, great FS support! -not- Under Linux I use UFS, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, EXT2 all just for free and not some crappy BSOD happy Winternals sollution. I don't see any ata66 support coming for NT in the (near) future either. Just face it, NT is simply not end user ready.. (At the moment, I'm using the experimental ata66 patch for my 6 ide devices under Linux 2.2.12 and it rocks!) p.s.
