Hey serious question here. On the Vodoo page it says you used a BP6 with dual celerons. Does processor speed affect OpenGL? Because if so that would seem rather unfair to windoze. If it doesn't affect it then I'll shut up. I love Be by the way just give me some damn GeForce support. Marc
Have you tried insulating the case? When I was at CalArts we had all of our machines in a seperate room also, but if you need to have the machine in your room with you, try getting some soundproofing material and sticking it on the OUTSIDE of the case. You can even be creative and make nicely shaped holes for wires/cdrom/etc...That cuts the noise down. Also, limit your devices, e.g. Get rid of a couple 4 gigs and buy 1 8 gig(or whatever your needs are, your see my point). I've found HD's make the most noise, and produce the most heat besides the CPU. There are also some damn quiet Power supplies out there that will probably help your cause. Anyways Marc
How many hard drives do you have in the thing? It sounds more like they would be producing that heat. If your CPU was raising the temp. of your room that much it would probably be running to hot to work at all. If you have 5 or 6 hard drives going at once, that produces more heat than u-238 on the surface of the sun. (OK that was stupid) but you get my point.
I'd like to know what these people are using that is so loud. Maybe they just don't remember what stuff USED to sound like.
Case in point, I have an old x86 box running SCO. It has 3 Full Height SCSI-2 5.25 drives. These mothers are DAMN loud. I'm talking a high pitch whine that attracts animals from miles around (and drives my cat up the wall).
Next to it I have another more *ahem* recent machine. It's a 550 with CD/RW, CD, 2 IDE and 1 SCSI-3 drive. Full Tower extra wide Server case I ganked from a client, with 5(!!!) fans. I can't hear the fans over the TV. Why? The case.
The case is made out of steel. I am not going to pretend to understand why, but this is the quietest case I have ever owned, (the heaviest too).
My point? I think with these super cheap, tiny cases you are going to have more of a noise factor. The cases are all plastic and have 0 insulation. Let's face it, most of these companies are using sub-par parts in order to keep their costs down. CHeap fans are loud, Cheap HD's are loud, and cheap cases let all the sound out.
Marc
Of course let's not forget the sound of MS users screaming at BSOD's. They probably make the most noise of all. `;^)
What Courteny forgot to mention was all the bands that get that money spent on them and don't sell any albums. Those bands don't have to recoup. They can't. Plus the fact that the *poor band* Keeps all money from touring after recoupment, sure they got a 1 mil advance, but a Stadium touring band (who is getting that kind of advance) is charging 25-40 dollars a ticket. Say 5000 people attend per city (That's a low estimate) and a band plays 100 dates, That's 12,500,000. Not counting Mechandise, which at most shows Shirts are 15-30$. So the band spends an additional 5 or 6 million on expenses (Roadies, equipment managerss, etc.) They wracked up several mil after that. Sorry but I don't feel bad for Courtney or any other Big band. Signing away the rights to your music is a choice that is made on the idea that you will get a VERY large return.
If an artist signs away their copyright that is their fault. There are not many artists that sign the copyright of their music over "for perpituity". If it is for the length of their contract, so what? That's their decision, their choice. They want the Record Company to throw money at them, they have to give something up. But is the RIAA any less valid of an owner? NO. They hold the copyright, respect that much.
Ummm...That's if you sign a contract, and a poorly written one at that. If an artist signs away the rights to his/her music, then that's their own fault. Don't go saying the RIAA is evil, noone is forced to sign a contract.
You still are missing a key distinction. He owns a business. In his case he got the parts and started selling them. I think that's great. Unfortunately not everyone in this country is 1. saavy/creative enough to do something along these lines. And the bottom line is he still has to be able to run his business. No he doesn't have to be a computer guru, he has to be a businessman.
An older friend in his 50's gave my younger friend who was in college some advice about starting a Mechanical Engineering Consulting firm.
"Drop you mechE major and go to business school." But I digress.
Your friend had the foresight to take advantage of online sales. But like any business, he got lucky.
This is true in a comparable sense (say compared to getting venture capital to open a storefront, etc...) However there is still many barriers. Not to be an elitist, but let's face it, not everyone can code, not everyone can run a business, and there aren't that many jobs out there for Joe-SixPack that are net-related. I think in the VERY long term you are correct. But we (the U.S. at least) are still heavily based on the service industry. The net simply will not replace this until someone comes up with 1. Reliable Teleportation, and 2. Matter synthesis (a la Star Trek food machines). Then you will you have a true economy upheaval.
I guess all I'm trying to say is that no, not every citizen can make money off the net right now.
While I think the article was rather far-fetched, I disagree with a couple of your points.
Err... Be ? RedHat, SuSE & other Linux distributors ?
I think when you say a viable consumer OS there are a lot of factors you have to look at.
1.UI Be is has a nice UI. Linux has come a long way, but still can't touch the MacOS or even Windows.
2.Compatibility Be has crappy hardware support, I would love this to change since I like how well multimedia runs under it, but there are no drivers for my video card or sound card. Not to mention software. To a lesser extent you can say the same about Linux. I know things are changing, I know more Hardware and Software vendors are supporting linux, but at this point you still don not have the wealth of apps and games that Windows and MacOS have. What's the biggest killer here? the office suite. Star Office is pretty good, Corel Office is so-so. But neither of these is convincing enough for a switch. New Users maybe, but Joe SixPack can be relatively stubborn.
Are you sure ? For some tasks, it's just the opposite : I don't want a GUI on my firewall, for instance.
The average user, 1. Doesn't know what a firewall is, 2. Shouldn't have to. (Warning...Outlandish Opinion Follows) As far as I'm concerned firewalls should be controlled by ISP's in most cases. Hopefully if a person wants to run a server of some kind they would know what a firewall is at that point. But the average user has no reason to have to configure a firewall anymore. Dumbing down aside, I feel we should be moving towards simplification. If that means there a class of Uber-Geeks who are hailed as Gods because we can take apart a computer, or it means that machines become so simple that is impossible to do things like fry motherboards, crash your OS etc., then so be it. Either way we will be in a better spot then we are now.
Since Apple makes money by selling hardware and has always done that, this scenario is less than probable. See what happened to Mac clones two years ago.
Uhhh no. If the file is called QuickFlick.mpg.exe, It will look like an exe. IF people have the Hide File Extensions For File Types which are registered option on, The file will say QuickFlick.mpg, but it will still look like an EXE.
Wow you need to calm down. Blind zealotry doesn't fix bugs. Instead of saying good one less bug to worry about, you go and flame everyone in existence. That doesn't help.
People are going to expect that problems with software connected to the internet to be fixed and fixed fast
This is a bug that is almost 2 years old. Your argument doesn't work here.
Please PLEASE read the article before you post. You made yourself look rather immature and foolish.
that's why they don't use the bleeding edge kernels.
2.1.x is bleeding edge? Then what is 2.3.x? Gushing edge? Seriously, 2.1.x dates back to 1998 . Isn't that enough time to find these kinds of bugs? Now I'm not trying to flame here but this bug has existed for almost 2 years without being noticed. How far back do we have to go to be assured? IANAC (I am not a coder).
"Again Linux Beats MicroSoft to Future Technology Standard!" 'Nuff said.
That's what the story sad. That's what the parent said. Linux didn't beat anyone. At least not in this case. But who cares anyway? All that matters is that they are on top of things enough to support it right away so noone says Linux is backwards and behind the times.
Isn't that what the spirit of Open Source is all about? Besides they have not one but 2 links on the top of their page to slashdot.org. Sure did blow that theory out of the water.
Where was it debunked? As far as I'm concerned, any software that wasn't installed by me, shouldn't be there.
something's calling home Exactly, something is calling home without your permission. Isn't that enough? Where do we draw the line? Sorry but you haven't offered any proof as to it being a hoax.
As the parent to my post pointed out, you can remove the spyware by running OptOut, a free program. However, with some programs (I witnessed this with GetRight), IF you run (run NOT install) the software again, the spyware comes back. REALLY creepy.
I submitted a story about that exact topic some 2 months ago./. obviously didn't think it was relevant enough. But damnit it makes me mad to think that just because I used GetRight (any version after 3.3.4) once I had spyware on my machine for a couple months before I heard about Aureate. This is the ultimate in privacy intrusion. Things like this are what make me want to go all open source.
A list of products which contain Aureate spyware can be found here.
Detailed information about the people using your program and their feedback
Updated statistics on your application's performance on the Radiate Network
What they don't tell you is that all the information they receive about your browsing habits is WITHOUT YOUR PERMISSION. The spyware uploads information without ever telling you.
Scary, but yet another argument for forced distribution of code. And to think, I'm an MS zealot `;^).
Hemos, I don't know where you get that idea that you are FORCED to have a subsidiary to sell products in the US. There is no law that states this. However, if there were....
MS opens a division in the US called MSSales. Want to break them up? Sure go ahead. It's a meaningless act. You have 3 sales companies that sell different MS products. MS doesn't care. With regards to 20K employess moving, it probably wouldn't be that hard to coax people into moving, or find other people who are willing to.
Those cases were based on divisions of MS. If MS moved it's offices to Canada, and had no US division, (only exported software here) The US Government could only impose trade restrictions, it could not touch the company.
No but they do dream of electric sheep.
:P
