The example was given below but I'll repeat it here.

    Diablo][ ~=$50usd.

SpiceGirls 1st. Album(New) ~=16 Cost to produce/record Album ~=$500,000 (I have the stats I will find it later)

    Amount to promote ~= $17,000,000

    Amount received concertsales/albumsales ca. 1996-1999 ~= 130,000,000.

Where's your 35000% now? I don't know how much it cost to make Diablo][, but they have a MUCH higher markup than an album does, as they do not have as much real world expenses. Lawyers are more expensive than programmers.

  2. Re:But will anything come of it? on States Sue Record Companies For Price Fixing · · Score: 4

Ok, I for one am fully in favor of this lawsuit, but please don't make the mistake of saying that $.30 is all it takes to make a CD. A professional album costs upwards of $100,000 to record. Plus advertisements, plus distribution, plus the amount of money the industry "eats" for all the bands that don't sell. Don't forget for every Spice girls there are 100 bands that get printed, promoted and distributed and never sell crap. CD's should be cheaper, that is for sure, but your argument just doesn't cut it here.

God will you shut up about the RIAA already? Not everyone wants a 1 inch device that runs everything they own. Noone is getting rid of CD's anytime soon. Think about how stupid that is. Are there 270million people online in the US? NO. Until the entire world is wired at birth, CD's will not disappear for an online counterpart.

One other thing, you rant and rant about the RIAA. It seems to me these are the rants of a bitter musician, who found that noone wanted to listen to his crap. The RIAA isn't stopping you from distributing your music, Napster or not. Why don't you bite the bullet and spend a few grand on printing CD's. Why? BECAUSE NOONE WILL BUY THEM. You know it. Now get over it and shut the fuck up already.

    Ok idiot,

First of all, when the osm thing happened, noone mentioned any names. There was a reason for that. There is this little law that regards this thing called LIBEL. Since the people behind the osm thing knew it was a joke, they were smart enough to make allusions, and people from /. took the bait and ran with it, coming up with conspiracy theories ranging from ddos to Natalie Portman.

You on the other hand have commited libel, so I really hope you ARE getting sued, or else guess what buddy? YOU'RE GONNA! And they will have a case. You have named 2 seperate corporate entities in a lawsuit, and that's libel as far as the courts are concerned.

When has that ever happened? I've played in many a band, played in many a cover band, and played many a bar. In none of these situations did we ever have to pay composers royalties.

With regards to OLGA, it is still there and in my opinion better than ever. It has more tabs then they used to, and more mirrors. Ok, you have to click and search, there are maybe 3 extra clicks involved. But who cares? The information is stll there. I agree that what the RIAA did sucks, but don't tell people that OLGA is gone because it isn't.

Bear in mind that I am not trying to flame slashdot, obviously I like it or I wouldn't read it. But most of these problems I see in the middle of the night (eastern time2 or 3 am). You have to wonder then because you KNOW they aren't getting nearly as many hits as they are getting at 11 or 12 am. That's all. I do love /. and if I was a coder I would contribute, but I'm not so I suggest instead.

And true /. is not in the same league as Yahoo, but I consider it to be a lot larger than my friend from colleges site, and they have a LOT of money and major corporate backing.

    Just my opinion mind you.

But here's how I see it, /. is on hardcore equipment, and pays people to run it. If I ran a server (NT jokes aside) that was this unreliable I would be fired in about a week.

How about the odd story that at least tells us what is going on. Just throw something in the quickies like Hey we had some problems due to a mySQL misconfig, here's what happened and why. Not only would this satisfy a lot of us /bitchers, but it may provide a learning experience for all of us using similar tools.

If you ask me "open source" and "Free Software" is part of the problem. HighSchoolers seem to think that free software means no rules and no consequences.

If I went into a job interview and took the previous persons resume in with me how far would that get me? That's about the same thing as cheating in video games.
