    MP3's are a proprietary format, not content unlike the movies made just for the AppleSoup service. They aren't going to be showing the Matrix they are going to show their own shows. I don't pay for anything on the net but thats because I just buy CD's. I've been accused of a lot but never of being an OpenSource Zealot.

    This won't be a place to shoot around your vcd dump of The Matrix, they are going to distribute their own content. Until they are putting up some kind of programming that people know and like there is no hook for people to sign up in the first place. People loved Napster because it's easy to get something that (and this is important) they want for nothing. This program doesn't seem to offer that, and if Valenti jr. is involved, you can believe that they will be keeping close tabs on what goes through the service.

    Well they don't support the business edition of it because it includes PeachTree which IIRC isn't ported. But wordperfect home version is still available. There is no reason for them to drop Linux support if they are selling a version of Linux!

    So you don't think weed laced with opium can lead to regular opium use which can lead to Heroin?

    You don't think that E laced with coke leads to regular usage of coke? Don't tell me that it doesn't and don't point to studies. I've lived it and the story is the same everytime. Of course not EVERYBODY becomes a crack head if you hit a joint. But I've seen it again again and again, and I'm tired of it.

    However I would argue that my rights are taken away by drug users who drive, drug users who assault me on the street, crack users who have children, destroying lives before they are born...

    I see this as a much greater problem.

    Well that's kind of my point, sorry if it was unclear.

    I am against censorship.

    I am against drugs.

    I am against web sites that promote DIY drugs.

    I am against big government.

    But something has to be done. I do all I can to educate, but as long as criminals are coddled in the courts, and people aren't educated as to the REAL effects of drugs are, I take any solutions I can get.

    Ok, on the free speech issue I agree with you.

    I am a drug using geek. I think it's pretty hypocritical for people to be "anti-drug" and then go out and get hammered on a saturday night

    . I have to take issue with this. As a recovering heroin addict, I watched many a friend pass out and never awaken based on having a little too much, air in the needle, etc.. Yes I know there is a difference between weed and heroin. Yes I know that alcohol is addictive and damaging. But to be a part of an "anti-anti-drug movement" is just too much. I've seen way too many lives destroyed by the horrors of real drugs. You can call me weak or say I have no will power, but I am not the only one out there who has been addicted to something. These people need help. Drugs must be stopped at all costs. Weed Shrooms and E are all gateways to a much much worse area of society.

    Did anyone think this test was kind of...I don't know stupid? I mean, what's the point of giving up numbers like "2-3 times faster" or "much better" That's not a benchmark. The author went into detail about the setup and then proceeded to not give any real detail about what happened. He aldo didn't really say what a connection was, was it being banged at constantly every second? Were they lagged to account for reading the data it was pulled up?

    All in all it seemed pretty superficial.

    Of all companies to hate, I don't think this is one of them. Why? The Ronald McDonald House.

    Here in Cleveland the RMH is a wonderful hospital for children (part of the University Hospital Systems). RMH provides amazing care for children who otherwise would have to spend most of their lives in sterile hospital beds next to 90 year old heart patients. They also provide entertainment, recreation, and rehabilitation. Now granted it is not free or anything, but many of the facilities there would not exist without the McDonald's corporation. Sure they are big business and we are supposed to hate them, but at least here, they are doing the Right Thing(tm).

    I think that while it is good that the FTC is getting involved, I think a little bit of caveat emptor as well as some common sense needs to be applied when people purchase things.

    Everytime you buy one of these "free pc's" you have to sign a contract. I don't know about some people, but when I sign a contract I read it. Anything that is not stated in the contract cannot apply to the deal being made. Unfortunately people sign things without reading them. They forget that they are bound to do with these contracts say. They get screwed by extra charges, they get pissed. Sorry but I think that's their problem.

    Maybe I'm just being an elitist pig again `;^)

    I've visited Canada, The UK, Jamaica, and Australia on various vacations, and once visited Japan on business.

    Bad argument. UK/Canada are too similar to the US. They are thrown out. Ditto for Japan, Australia (from an economic standpoint). That leaves Jamaica. I would be interested to know just how many indeginous people you saw online there, or did you never leave Kingston? Tell me, how many people are online in Uganda? In Haiti? In Mexico? Tell me about free internet access in Somalia, a country that can't feed it's own people. Tell me about free internet access in Uzbekistan, where terrorists are constantly attacking the government. I also know that the Third World people who do behave that way invariably come from rich families, had a lifestyle I've never dreamed of for myself and obsessively project their guilt onto me. Of the two of us, I'm thinking exactly one grew up with a house full of servants. And it sure wasn't me.
