And you can do it if you wanted. You can do the same thing in N. America. With a car, you have any choice you like. You can build it from scratch (and pay for it) or buy one ready to go.
With software, due to laws, that choice can be taken from you, and Microsoft and likes used that option extensively.

What happens when Fedora 9 comes out? Will I just be able to push a button and seamlessly upgrade the whole thing in place?

Yes you will. I did this from Fedora 5 to Fedora 8. FC5 to 6 was bit rough, but 6->7->8 was as easy as:

    rpm -ihv fedora-release-NewVersion.rpm
    yum -y update

Why did you underestimate someone just because he is not American? I worked in company (well, subdivision of the company) where every position was filled by foreigner (foreigner in a sense that he was not educated in USA, most of them were citizens) expect top manager. There were 20 engineers, 5 scientist, 2 technicians from all over the world. The company produced chips in-house from bottom up (from system level, through design and board level stuff, including characterization). So, why do you assume that other countries are unable to teach someone "higher-valued skills"?

TiVo did not break GPL v2, it just found hole in it. Even if he went after TiVo he would not be able to do anything, since they did not break GPL licence. V3 should solve this problem.

Yet again, even after reading this patent claim, it is still clear that they have patented NetMeeting and its cousins, which existed in 1998 and before.

All that mumbo-jumbo language states that they are patenting software that converts your voice/video into data on one side and back to voice (or maybe video, or anything graphical) on other side.

I remember that NetMeeting had this functionality much before 1999.

    Or maybe I am wrong?

Speed of electrons through copper is much less then speed of light (it is aproxx 10^6m/s, compared to 300*10^6 m/s for speed of light). Also, information should travel about same speed in fiber and copper, since it is EM wave that keeps info. However, you are right about the bandwidth. Fiber cable has far more bandwidth for signal than copper, since it has lower losses at higher frequencies.

  8. Re:Because it makes sense now is not a reason on Is Simplified Spelling Worth Reform? · · Score: 1

Well, there is only one correct way to pronounce 99.999% of words. Those words can be converted to phonetic alphabets without any consequences. Rest of them can be spelled in 2 or 3 different ways, so you can have tomato and tomeito, and both can be right. Southern and northern dialects are not proper English, they are dialects only so you do not take them into account. If you think about it, the reason for dialects is that there was not simple way to decode how to pronounce the words (and education, or lack of it). Phonetical (or fonetikal) alphabet would solve that problem, in my opinion.

My native language had a reform about 200 years ago ( hence 3 billion mistakes in this post and bias to phonetical alphabet), and it fully switched to phonetical alphabet. But rules were simple, you write as you speak and you read as it is written. Each sound had one letter and no other letter had a same sound. This is all you needed to write any word you ever heard and to read any word that it is written for you. I personally learned to read when I was five, and I was late bloomer. I know kids that are 4 and are able to read as well as any adult.

This does not mean that kids become suddenly smarter, you still need to teach them to read and need to work with them, but at least it gives a kid opportunity to accumulate information at early age. But most importantly, and this is reason why I am writing this post, poeple like myself, non native speaker, will be able to pronounce new words easily and learn faster as well.

Draw layout using any software you like, and print it on transparency.
Buy two layered board from local store (Active?). Then buy UV sensitive chemical, unfortunatelly I can not remember the name, but you can find it on Internet. Dip board in it, glue transparency on the board and expose it to bright UV light for half hour (this depends on the chemical you used).

Remove transparency and put board in acid (you will have to use trial and error to figure out for how long, since it depends of type of acid you used as well of UV sensitive chemical).

If this is too complex, you can try hot iron. Take transparency, put it on top of the board and use hot iron to inprint ink from transparency to board. Then just leave it in the acid until it etches non-marked part of the board. You will still need to experiment with tickenes of the lines.

    Yes, bit over the top.

I wanted few times to design some circuits myself, but every time I would be stopped by available time or funds. If I had tool like that, it does not need to do EM simulations of the traces or any complex stuff, just simply route placed components and be able to match schematic with layout (i.e. LVS), I might actually have some custom hardware.

I am even ready to help designing it that is why I use gEDA. It is not perfect, but it can be improved. So, there is not reason to attack guy, since not many of us can actually afford 400$ for software plus few hundreds for tools and components for some pet project.

Obviously if guy needs it for company, either he will be fired or company will fail. You need to pay to compete, but to repeat, for amateur stuff, cheaper=better.

    Regards.
