I agree completely. And this: The number of people with Asperger Syndrome who work in IT is disproportionately high when compared with other fields. More males are diagnosed with AS than females; the ratio is about 10 to 1. Draw your own conclusions.
That said, I'm a female AND a technology director AND our system runs on open source AND I've been fighting this juvenile prejudice against women in IT for years. Frankly, the immature and degrading comments concerning women in IT are getting old. Get over yourselves.
A year into our own experiment with Linux on the desktops at school, I can assure you that you won't regret the decision. Plus, you can always go back, right? The are numerous educational applications available- check out kde edutainment. I've found an open source equivalent for every (yep, every) application we were running. Maintenance is much easier than in a Windows environment, too. The biggest surprise was this: I expected the staff to have some difficulty with the transition. It never happened. I believe if I hadn't made them aware we were using a new OS, they would have just figured things out on their own, just like the kids did.
Anyway, what have you got to lose by giving it a try?
