Again, I don't dispute the percentages just the terminology. If everyone just believes that file sharing is illegal even if the works being shared are copyrighted. It's a lost cause if we all just admit that copyright infringement is illegal everywhere in the world regardless of intent.

Don't do yourself a disservice. Illegality would need to proven in court. You could say you're infringing on another's copyright, if and only if you're in the right jurisdiction and are in fact proven to be infringing. I wish file sharers would stop confirming their guilt when legality of what their doing is not proven or well defined.

I was thunderstruck the other day when my 3-yr old daughter saw a picture of Mickey Mouse somewhere and said, "Who's that?" She honestly had no idea. And it occurred to me that because Disney (and by extension the other MPAA and Cable players) have so locked away their content and have been so intransigent about getting with the times that they are running a real risk of rendering themselves culturally irrelevant. Think about what that also means about their ancillary revenue streams: my kids will never pester me to buy Disney toys or to take them to Disneyland. Disney has unwittingly saved me about $20K (over their lifetimes) that way.

So go on, guys, do the world a favor and destroy Hulu, too. The rest of us will move on happily without you!

I bet that not a single Disney executive has even considered this. I grew up being constantly bombarded with Warner Bros and Disney cartoons and thusly indoctrinated. My kids are aware of Disney and watch the blockbuster movies (including Pixar) but are not as indoctrinated. If anything, my youngest is an anime fan because of the freely available content.

Great point. Although I hate big media as much as the next slashdotter, people should read the article before going off on a rant. Sounds to me that they are enhancing the service for cable subscribers, non-subscribers get the same level of (mediocre) service now. I get Hulu Plus from outside the US, I'm curious to see what happens to me if anything. I can live with Hulu Plus though, so I'm not worried.

Absolutely. Ageism is widespread and tolerated. Most gen y's rushed into management wouldn't hire someone older than them. Not only that there's far too much emphasis on specific technical credentials than sound engineering experience.

  6. Here's what sealed the deal for me on Ex-NASA Employees Accuse Agency of 'Extreme Position' On Climate Change · · Score: 1

I was always somewhat sceptical of anthropogenic theories of climate change that humans were the blame and we were causing the increase. I certainly felt we had part of the blame but there's so many complex systems at play, were we at fault alone? How do we know it's our CO2 up there? I think the climate change advocacy folks need to present better evidence in order to convince folks who are somewhat educated in science. The evidence that CO2 isotope composition is changing in the atmosphere points the finger at burning fossil fuels. Take a look at http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2004/12/how-do-we-know-that-recent-cosub2sub-increases-are-due-to-human-activities-updated/ for example, which highlights this. The carbon isotopes in the CO2 in the atmosphere are changing and match closely with fossil fuel composition. Pretty compelling, IMO.

In Einstein's work, which was mathematical proofs of relativity, you could disprove him with a sound, counter-proof. Cut and dry in theoretical physics (comparatively). Technically, we should be talking about climate change hypotheses since none have been proven into theories because it's predictive in nature and empirical data is not enough. However, what we can say is that there hasn't been sufficient data to counter the current hypotheses that the majority of climate scientists adhere too. There is something to said for the fact that if you had a hypothesis that went counter to your colleagues, it's a dangerous and possibly career-ending move. And since you can't prove things in a cut and dry manner, it's your interpretation of the data versus the 900 others.

That seems low. I started out in software at $28K in 1988 in Ottawa area. My guess is starting salaries in Ontario are 50-60K. Hardware used to pay less but shortages due to everyone moving to software caused their salaries to go up. In some cases, if you have analog skills you command a large premium.
