A friend of mine used to be a vice president at a big tech firm. He lived in CA. The company he worked for eventually went under and he went looking for a new job. No matter how overqualified he was though, he couldnt get another job. Finally one of his interviewers told him why.
A few years back he had gotten a bill for a hit and run in NY. He hadnt been there that day, and it was physically impossible for him to have done it, but someone had "seen" his license plate. His lawyer told him that it was better to pay the $75 dollars than to pay him 600 or 700 to go out and fight it for him. So he paid the bill.
Then, a few months before the company, which was involved in some defense projects, he got into an arguement with his neighbor, and ended up in a shouting match at the bottom of his driveway. About a week later the guy died of natural causes.
When his company went under, everyone had a security check done on them by the Office of Homeland Security, without their knowing about it. This report was available to any company that he applied at for a job. In it, it said that he had committed a hit and run, and that after a loud and violent arguement with a neighbor, the man died.
That was why he wasnt able to get a job. That was about 2 years ago now, and he still hasnt gotten a job.
Innocent until proven guilty? Bullshit.
