"find an alternative, and you will see Amazon fix itself."
too true.
I have had very poor service from Amazon when I have used it as a (customer in the UK.)
First I bought a usb thumb drive which arrived late because the vendor claimed "Amazon never passed on the order". Then I ordered a book on Python for my little geeklings (my children) who were showing interest in learning some programming. Strike while the iron is hot I thought. However this thought was not shared by Amazon. After a month I received an email saying that the book would be delayed a further 6 to 8 weeks. So I cancelled and instead went to http://computermanuals.co.uk/ who managed to get me the book delivered to the Scottish highlands next day!
Guess who I am using for my tech books now.
found my alternative.
and for me, for old PCs I don't really expect much eye-candy. And I love all the icewm shortcuts, the less time on the mouse the better.
However I did download fvwm-crystal and it works OK. Would take me a while to play with it to get it to work for me as well as icewm, and I don't have enough free time at the moment.
However it is great to see another desktop choice for your older PC, and the article is worth a read, and very helpfull to set up the desktop.
Maybe I will revisit FVWM-crystal when I have some time to kill.
Although [Debian|Ubuntu] can't be everything to everyone, I am amazed by the breadth of Debian.
If I set-up a standard linux PC for a friend then I would use Ubuntu but there are so many niches that can be filled by Debian and huge choice for the user.
For example I recently set up Debian testing on a laptop with no cdrom by using a couple of floppy instal disks and an ethernet connection to an internet connected router.
On the web there are a huge number of friendly resources and articles to help set-up your debian system.
I wish I had researched before buying a sony minidisc.
A few years ago I bought a sony MD recorder for my wife. This was mainly to use recording client sessions for training. I was really annoyed when I discovered that it did not interface with Linux and even worse in order to get a copy of recording you had to go through an analogue loop. When I complained to Sony they were very sarcastic "sorry you can't break our patented atrac format". Then they put me on their email list to inform me about their grand new products.
My wife still uses the mini-disc as a stand alone unit. It has proved an expensive error, and I won't buy sonny again in a hurry.
Sony is a company that is no longer focused on pleasing the customer, now they are about pleasing themselves!
