I used to work in transplantation immunology, on the Facilitating Cell, which is a bone marrow-derived population that facilitates the engraftment of donor hematopoietic stem cells across complete MHC barrier with no evidence of GVH. The mechanism is unclear, but it appears to induce production of regulatory T cells, putting a damper on the effector T's that would lead to GVH.
It also confers donor-specific solid organ transplant tolerance, more or less what happened here.
