Just saying that there were small drops of blood isn't really enough. Who's was it? How long had it been there? Was it directional? Its not uncommon for blood to be present where people live, we are far from perfect, we cut ourselves working on our cars, in our garages, back yards, kitchens, bathrooms. There really hasn't been enough information released to the public for us to form an accurate picture of any series of events.

While I can't speak to the obvious idiotic answer the poster received I can say that I used to support DSL. While the web page was obviously wrong you cannot assume that you will get what you pay for on the invoice. Because of the way that most telecommunications providers provision DSL there is a possibility that up to 20% of the bandwidth you pay for can be taken up by network overhead. Not necessarily your network overhead. It actually depends on the number of people on the local loop.

As for actually troubleshooting it, pings don't mean crap. A traceroute will give you much more information. A continuous trace using something like mtr (Matt's TraceRoute) or some other similar program will help you narrow down where the problem is occuring, additionally, if its a router and not a bridge then the CPE configs should be checked. If its a bridge then an ATM ping from the edge router (ERX) can tell you if its actually on the circuit as there should only be the one hop between the ERX and the CPE. The tech support reps should be able to do this last one for you.

  10. Software support. on What Software Should ISPs Distribute and Support? · · Score: 1

I work for the web hosting dept of a large ISP. We don't support software, that is up to the company that created the software. We do provide settings for popular software packages and will provide the generic settings for the services we provide (e-mail, ftp, what not). If the customer is having problems with the functionality of the program they are directed to the software manufacturer.

We don't support operating systems either, the benefit to this is that we will give you the settings and you can find out where to put them. We do happen to have the locations where that info needs to be entered but again, we don't support the OS, we support the settings and our product.

As for the 'Shutup, reboot, shutup, good bye' mentality, I can't remember the last time I told someone to reboot their computer.

  11. Doubt It. (was: Re:@Home will prob ban static IPs) on @Home Responds to the UDP Notice · · Score: 1

I seriously doubt that they will ban static IP addresses.

I speak only for Bresnan@home users in Michigan but everyone is assigned an IP address tied to the MAC address of the Cable Modem. When the technicians install the software on the computers they setup a static IP address in the Network settings.

The cost associated with changing all these people from static to dynamic IP address would be prohibitive. The additional cost of displeased customers leaving would also have an effect on this decision.
