I have had home owners insurance cancel on me for having no claims on a policy for 10 years, I think this is very common for Farmers, they figure if they cut you off, they are keeping the biggest profit they are likely to get.
I asked the person in Circuit City pushing a laptop warranty if he would go in back and get me another if I jammed a 12 inch screwdriver through the side of the box. He said no so I handed him the box back and walked out of the store and bought the laptop at CompUSA. They asked too, but at least they took no for an answer.
I agree with this. The status symbol argument only comes from people that simply can not admit that Apple makes a good product. I own an iPone because it is far and away the very best smart phone on the market. There is still no competition. I am the most annoyingly practical person in the world. That is why I own an iPhone.
I would like to see this too. Push is the better solution for IM over polling, but I would like to be able to instantly switch in and out of it. The speed is close, but the delay can be annoying sometimes. I think this and the ability to background Pandora, etc. will be the only areas most be care about multi-tasking.
Damn financial institutions and their DRM, don't they know information wants to be free. Nice of the government to prop up big business and trample all of our rights to access any information we want!
You are just a typical uninformed, ignorant IT guy who actually knows nothing about IT. People like you are the reason more companies and Universities are having to outforce. If the decisions you make managing your IT department are as uninformed as your post, your email will be outsourced before you know it.
Because Google and yale will have a binding contract that well essentially eliminates everyone of your points. Many, many companies who are not using Gmail still outsource their email servers to third party providers..I am not sure anyone who is posting here knows anything at all about how IT works in 2010. All of your points are controlled by underpinning contracts and SLAs which are far more binding and enforceable than employment contracts with the University IT staff.
Really you think the people at google are more interested in your raise than the internal IT department? If there is a leak and your mail is internal it can be very complicated to resolve. If there is a leak and your email is at google , it is quite simple. I am not aware of any published reports of google doing anything with anyones email ever (and either are you). Yes they do match ads to the text on the screen, that is not mining your email.
There are privacy concerns and then there is cooky and ignorant.
There is nothing wrong with sending 30MB attachments in 2010. A 40mb account limit is ludicrous. You can very easily get a 30MB docx file even with properly embedded images. You apparently don't understand the scope and complexity of research documents, nor do you understand that network connectivity at most research institutions makes 30MB attachments easy to send. If you want to forward a document to another researcher than posting it on a sharepoint site (or something similar) does not always make sense.
You assume something is wrong with the users. The real problem is to many companies/universities believe disk storage still costs what it did in 1995.
How could anyone really answer your question without knowing the value of the servers you are logged into? If the servers you are connecting to are in a secured bunker and you are leaving the connection open from your house while your not there and the data is something valuable enough for some to break into your house.. Well then no, you should not leave the session logged in. In general it is a bad idea to leave a connection you are not using logged in. If you are locking your workstation (you did not say), than maybe it is still ok.
Keep strict host key checking on and just log out when you are not using the box. If the key changes and your not expecting it, either someone has already broken into your server, your DNS server (on either end), or it is time to talk to the isps on the endpoints and find out which one is out to get you. The "big bad" Internet is the least likely place for you to have a security problem, it is simply too unpredictable.
The iPhone and iPad can have multiple browser tabs open too, I am not sure what switching speed you are concerned with. You can access facebook through the browser on the iPhone, the app is just another option.
compare the experience of playing need for speed (for example) on a netbook versus an iPad. You also go the price wrong on the 16GB Wifi iPad. How much does your netbook weigh? How long can you watch video on a single charge? How thick is your netbook. All of these things matter and likely matter more to consumers than "open development".
The ipad does not need to be tethered to a computer to do advanced functions, it has to be tethered to a computer to A. Upgrade the OS or B. Sync with the computer..
And those products are thicker, heavier, more complex to operate and more prone to failure. Your right the alternatives are better if you ignore all of the things real people care about.
You do realize that apple would love all digital media to be DRM free right. People always seem to confuse the people who implement DRM when required by content owners with the content owners that require the implementation.

People in those companies probably still wonder why they are both out of business :)

It is a larger more powerful version of the most popular mobile application platform ever developed?
Those guys at Apple are morons....

"once its explained to you" is the difference between a palm and an iPhone.
So you dishonestly repeated the same critique with a different word to strengthen your argument?
gg
Then they get frustrated after the 100th [INSERT INITIAL OF NEW COLOR]SOD in a day and jump off a bridge.
The best part is Microsoft tried to come out ahead on this by demoing an ugly , clunky, worthless, Windows based tablet.
You of course apparently have no idea what multi-threading is and that the iphone, ipod touch and ipad all support it.
Perhaps you should learn about application development before attempting to sound smart about it on the Internet.

Would make it awfully difficult to refute someones findings :)

Loving it so much they rushed out that joke of a tablet announcement at CES to try and be ahead. Apple simply embarrassed them (again).
Yes the iPad requires a computer. It will happily synch with your netbook.....

I can actually do that on the iphone right now.
