  1. How? on Motorola Timeport 270c Review · · Score: 4, Interesting

After reading the review, I'm still unclear how they can make the claim that it incorporates the functions of a laptop. I can see phone and pager, and maybe PDA, but not laptop.

  2. Funny buisness on Billennium's Over - Anything Break? · · Score: 1

There are some funny goings-on with BeBS (a Cit-86 style BBS package that runs on BeOS) 2.0 test2 that happened after the rollover. Rooms are reporting incorrect numbers of read/unread posts and some various functions are just plain funky. Luckily, 2.0 hasn't been released and the author (my friend) has a couple test boards up to check all this stuff out, but it's been interesting checking out new posts.

Oh, and I'm sure he'll appreciate a link to the board if anyone wants to help with beta-testing.

Why are there so many people that felt new machines with a different archetecture equates a quiet power supply. I'm sure this person isn't looking to shell out thousands of dollars and possibly a lot of time adapting to a new system because he wants his current machines to be quieter.

Since when have Intel processors been gracefull? Also, they have better luck at actually #producing# the chips they say they can. My Athlon hasn't been recalled, and that's more than you can say about the P!!!. Also, what's the deal with supposedly next gen CPUs that perform the same or worse than previous gen CPUs in some benchmarks? Seems that with your beloved SSE and higher clock speed, things don't get any better. Maybe Intel needs something with raw processing power that's priced in the consumer range (and no, Xeon's are not priced in the consumer range).

  5. Re:Who cares about chip size? Let's talk heat on Clawhammer to be 1/2 size of P4 · · Score: 4

Now come on. By insulating the transistors from the rest of the silicon, you're dissipating less power. That's the whole point of SOI. I suppose we could petition the chip manufaturers to use germanium semiconductors, but you're more likely to lose the CPU without a good heatsink. Granted, it'll have more transistors, but they'll be smaller and dissipate less power because of the size. I think AMD might surprise us with this one. I didn't find anything about the actual power savings from SOI or moving to a smaller transistor, but I'd be willing to bet it'll dissipate the same amount of power as the current Athlon. I'd have to belive they're looking into this heavily; it's a big issue nowadays.

Of course, it'll probably come out in the news at some point that they use NT and IIS for their website. It's happened to other companies I've believed in.
I wouldn't mind having a 64 bit machine for 30-40% off. I just hope you don't have to be an IT student (I'm going to school for Construction Electricity).

I followed the link to look up the search results for +sun +blade (in the story), and the first thing that came up was a story about solar sails, which shows up as being posted on ./ 2 before the sun workstation.

But back to the topic at hand, I wouldn't mind having a 64 bit machine to play with. Granted, I'd have to sell something to buy it, but maybe I could get some donations :).

Well, This was reported incorrectly. These aren't amature rockets, they're High Power rockets. The difference is like the one between hackers and crackers. Anyone outside the community can't tell/ doesn't care about the difference.
High power rockets use commercially available motors that are certified by a governing body. Amature rockets use motors designed by the person launching the rocket and require a lot more knowledge and money (not to mention time) to launch safely. It's a very expensive hobby whereas I could afford to do High Power rocketry while I had my forst job working 8 hours a week at Taco John's
High power rockets generally don't go much higher than this, and amature rockets are much more expensive and involved (high explosives certification, etc.).
I can't really see a college using amature rockets as a mandatory part of the curriculum.

Bit pricey considering they don't have all that much room in them in the first place. If I was converting a plane to a home, I'd go for at least a DC10. Maybe when I'm rich and famous, there'll be some crapped out 777s out there I could convert. Anything bigger than a 727, though. The cargo pits in those things are so short, I'd be hard pressed to use them for a crawlspace. 727s stacked on top of each other might make decent appartments, though.

Right on. I've known my now-girlfreind for about 4 years. We've only been an official couple for about 2 1/2 weeks. She isn't a computer geek (you better believe I am), but she respects my interest in it. We have always had a good time together as freinds and when a mutual freind kept trying to get us to "go out" (kind of a bad term, but it's widely used, so...) we got to talking about it. It turns out we're both exactly what the other wanted. It was worth having her for a freind for 4 years to be able to share what we do now. My point is, if you can't be happy with her as a freind, you probably can't be happy with her as more.
