to get rid of the useless labour government we have right now
Useless is a relative term, Labour are doing quit well compared to the liberal (blueblood) governments we have had recently, they done an increadible amount of work undering the damage that had been done to this country and its reputation in the previous decade.
Do you seriously want Abbott in charge instead, or maybe bring Howard back ?
I suspect there are a lot of myths out there. I wonder if there have been objective studies done comparing the long term development resource required for High and Low level languages.
Pretty much all languages have libraries available of existing work, so im not convinced there.
If you need to learn a different language for 1% of your program you need to hire a programmer who isnt dedicated to splits his expertise, so suddenly that 1% of code is a bigger problem than before.
My opinion is that the greatest limitation on any employable programmer is their ability to design, the way code is designed has more effect on the software than the language its written in.
High level langues limit design possibilities so it eliminates extremes, with two designers of similar experience, the good designer will create a better product in the same time with a low level language. Of course the reverse is true also, bad designers dig themselves into holes with low level languages. High level language is a safe choice, like training wheels.
Or this hypothetical. Is abusing the GPL wrong? If so, why is that wrong and piracy is okay?
Both action break the same laws, the difference is the intentions of the violators/violatees(is that word?).
When "pirating" proprietary stuff, you are taking from someone with a primarily commercial objective. When violating copyleft, you are taking from someone who is trying to help you.
Piracy helps to spread our rich global culture to those who cant afford to fully participate. They take from the elites whos wealth is used as a trophy rather then a means of survival. Copyleft violaters do so take power from the masses, for their own benefit.
it is an excellent way to judge its worth to the individual
I think you meant thats an excellent way to judge how much money an individual can take from it, you still benefit from it by saving money that would otherwise be paid to commercial vendors.
Advancing society's technical position at the constant expense of the individual's personal position isn't an ethical win.
True, but the fault lies with society, not with people contributing to it.
And yes, I know, there are exceptions. But the monetary market for GPL software is a tiny, thin slice compared to fully commercial.
The "money" in GPL software as compared to commercial software isnt a good way to judge its worth to society.
There is probably less money in Free software because parties have to compete as equals, which is how capitalism is supposed to work, its more efficient and delivers more value to society per work put in.
Your judging software by capitlaist rewards, but not pointing out that commercial software is a government granted monopoly, its anti-capitalistic in nature.
So for example, imagine if a company had a global monopoly on water, they could charge watever they like, so they could pay out lots of money as well, does that make monopolising water a good thing ?
With source in hand, anyone could make your software available for free. That makes it really hard to make a reasonable amount of money selling software.
This whole capitalism thing we are part of is bassed around the concept of compeition.
So when you claim that having to compete makes it hard for you to make a 'reasonable amount of money' you are demonstrating an inflated self worth.
People dont always object to others making money from the sweat and toil they donate to the cause. Its fine to make money from a project if your not underming its values and your pulling your own weight. But if your draining resources from the project, undermining its values, and contributing nothing, all for personal gain then expect to be hated.
Free software is driven by a desire to help people, Open Source is about helping corporations as well. So there are different attitudes from each camp to wether a specific method of making money from _Free_ software is reasonable.
Corporations and volunteers obviously have differnt cultures, if they want to play well together they need to try and respect each other even if they cant understand each other.
Unfortunately i cant think of any names of corporations that do respect Free software ideals, in sure there a dozens though !
You can't legally prevent other people from gaining access to the shop/factory with your protest, and that's why a denial of service attack is different.>
You can legally make it inconvenient for people to gain access, the purpose of picket lines is to force people to confront the issue, they can pass through a picket line, but expect a few insults on the way.
DDOS is very similar, most dont stop you from getting to the site, they just make it inconvenient, you have to wiat/reload the website a few times and you usually get through.
There is a fuzzy line in RL protests between legal and illegal protests, however online protest is completely illegal, there needs to be some tolerance for online protests.
The right to protest is of fundamental importance to our way of life, making it illegal isnt going to make it go away.
Was the smartphone, or tablet, or laptop, or music player revolutionary when apple released it, or was it the device they copied from that was revolutionary.
Using a jammer is a technical solution to a social problem, this always leads to problems.
Instead of usign a jammer, why not, ask the person nicely if they could be quiet, try and get the transport company to introduce 'quiet time' or 'quiet zones' and put signs up.
I've seen so many developers just slap the GPL on their code because it's perceived as the "default" choice.
Ive seen so many developers just slap a pricetag on their work because its percieved as the "default" choice. When asked why they chose money over freedom, they can't even explain the concept of social capital. When told how it works, many of those same people will say "oh, that's my long term intent." Sadly, because of the original "default" perception, a ton of work gets marketed this way.
I aggressively support the right to license something any way creators see fit, and happen to license my most of my stuff under copyleft licenses. That said, people really need to understand what different licenses provide before they run off using them. When in any doubt whatsoever regarding any of it, it wouldn't be a terrible idea to pay for an hour of a lawyer's time (if possible).
"I mean I haven't seen anything really secret or seriously sensitive in any of their releases.. and the expected fallout from their release amounted to nothing."
Exactly, but US citizens seem ok with that for nationalistic reasons, they dont mind being controlled and minipulated by the powerful few, as long as they are their countrymen.
The moment a non US controlled organisation like the UN wants to do what they have been doing they cry like children whos toys have been confiscated.
'The tiny particles known as black carbon pack a heavy punch when it comes to climate change, by trapping heat in the atmosphere and by alighting atop, and melting, Arctic ice.'
Oh well, at least the Antarctic and Glacial Ice arent effected.
These movie and music distributors behave like they dont give a damn about the rest of society, they seem to spend all their time plotting the best way to take all our stuff, no consideration to ethics or morality at all.
Its like they are bunch of PIRATES !!!
Its time to turn the tables with this "pirates" tag and stick on them.
From now on consider usign the term "MPAA Pirates" or "RIAA Pirates"
Charging for patches also discourages sloppy software with lots of patching after the fact.
Charging for patches also discourages propoer software maintenace techniques.
Team Fortess 2 was released over 4 years ago, its ongoing popularity on the PC is mostly due to its good maintenace technices, either bugfixes or updated content coming out every few days. Idiotic patch policy like M$'s is why it failed on XBox.
A culture that belives patches are a sign that something is wrong is... i dont even have the words...
'Western liberal arrogance leads us to condescendingly believe we know what's best for Africans. It's the worst racism of all.'
I might also ask how you would rate linching. that is hanging, burning at a stake, or shooting a pewrson based on skin color. Is that not as bad as'knowing whats best for africans' ?

After confusing fical policy with physical policy Steve Fielding calmly explained he had an good excuse, that he has a learning disability.
To think he was one of a few that held the balance of power for the whole country, disturbing.

And productivity mean what, quality code, or cheap code ?

And it doesn't require pissing off the feds. You can protest in a smart way or in a dumb way
So tell us, what is the smart way to protest online ?
Unfortunately any online action does involve 'pissing off' authorities, because they have made everything that hurts them illegal.
Why is a DDOS illegal, how is different that a RL protest outside a shop/factory ?
If they are going to be political freedom fighters, warriors, then they will have to act like warriors and think like warriors
So you are advocating violence as the smart way to protest ?
FAIL !
Apple distortion field detected !!!

Okay, but if you're going to download, at least send the artists some money.
Is this even possible ?
I expect this evil industry requires contracts that move all money through official channels so they can distribute the proceeds "fairly".

Yes, if they too lazy to document their tactics things arent looking good.
