I sincerely hope your faith is not misplaced. I long for the truth of what you say.
Unfortunately, I find myself slipping into a more cynical attitude than yours because of those darn polls that repeatedly show that the vast majority of Americans think Saddam Hussein was connected to 9/11 -- or the majoriy of Americans who think that the 9/11 terrorists came through Canada -- or the significant fraction of Americans who think that the earth is really 6000 years old -- or the vast... well, you get my point, I'm sure. These sorts of things very nearly have me convinced that the vast majority of Americans are oblivious to the world; fast asleep, perhaps, with visions of iPods and SUVs dancing in their head.
I truly hope that I am wrong and that you are right...
I think it's neat that a square metre is a surface area but, more importantly, what are its length and width?
100 watts is 100 watts (the product of any arbitrary number of suitable combinations of VxA.) To know either the amperage or voltage you need to know the other, and the product of those two numbers must equal 100W. In applications such as these, one typically specifies voltage since most products use standard voltages.
Think of it like: AxB=C. For a given C (100 W), your reply appears to be: "But what are A and B?"
Such a tool, I think, would be useful for evaluating the impact of proposed structures on viewscapes. Traditionally, urban planners and citizens have ignored the effect of what they do on viewscapes, hence the huge hotels that block residents' view of the ocean, for instance. In that sense, this is a hopeful development. On the other hand, a big part of the reason we haven't done a good job of analysing the impact on viewscapes is because people haven't been paying any attention to viewscapes, largely, until it's too late.
On balance, I think this is a good idea but I'm not convinced it will make much difference in the medium-term. It IS nice marketing hype, though:-)
The simple solution is to make the system which downloads patches more finely-grained, thereby putting the user in control of the dowload/patch schedule. That way, MS could post patches whenever they felt it appropriate and sysadmins would be responsible for fetching them and installing them as they (sysadmins) see fit. So, for example, a dialogue box something like this.
How do you want to check for and download updates?
1 Check for (Critical/Nice 2 have/Who cares?) updates and download automatically once per (minute/day/week/month/eclipse/millenium) and then (install/don't install) automatically
2 Don't download automatically but notify me when (Critical/Nice 2 Have/Who cares?) updates are available
3 Fuhgeddaboudit -- I'm raw!
Of course, this is a bit simplistic for real purposes but I think you get the drift of what I mean. For command-line users, there should be a way of scheduling a command with these options using cron or whatever Windows has that has cron-like functionality.

How do you know that Privacy International didn't just decide to keep the other rankings secret? :-)
'Cause if there's one thing Canadians are good at, it's getting an entire carload of people high.

In fact, Frink gives me 249,962,446.15730024456 Volkswagen Bug years but, I suppose, it's close enough for government work...
I just ran the contents of your post through the BS Paper Detector and I got:
"Your entry is too short."
I bet you hear that a lot, though, right? *nudge-nudge wink-wink*
