It is a core system, very basic. On top of that you can install what you want with ipkg's.

    I have running:
    SSHd
    trafic shaping with iptroute2+tc
    custome firewall script
    no-ip client
    tcpdump
    network syslogd

It doesn't run a webinterface (yes, to me that is an advantage.)

Next on the agenda: vpn client to the office. ( so I am always connected from home.)
serial interface so the nids can give instructions to the WRT.

This is exactly what I need, from a 12watt machine (the WRT uses 12V DC, 1A) that makes 0 noice (no moving parts)

And above all, it is a shiny fun geektoy :)

  12. Perspective on Hardened PHP · · Score: 5, Insightful

I think it is funny how most /. readers demonstrate how they think from a user perspective, and not from an admin perspective.

Now don't get me wrong, I understand, it's *hard* to think as an admin if you have never *been* one. But when you are an admin on a machine, you don't think "My users will just have to learn how to code secure, then there is no problem."
Sorry folks, just ain't gonna happen!
Joe home who wrote a site just to show off his holliday pictures thinks its swell how easy php is, and he doesn't really care about becoming fluent in php, as long as his little enviroment runs!

Sure, you can try and educate your user, but if you maintain a 500+ user server, security is in YOUR hands. only ONE of your users need make an error, and the whole machine might go down. And the "poor coding is the only reason for security holes" just doesnt cut it there.

Harden your servers, admins. Make the internet a fun place to be.

From my experience, its a nice windows replacement for non-powerusers.

It looks nice, it navigates like windows, and yeah, even your grandmother could install it!

But it was *never* meant to apeal to the power user. If you are a linux geek, stick to what u know/like.

If, on the other hand, your dad, or sister or such wants out of windows, this might be a good option.

But then again, at a 100$/year per seat (last i heard anyway) it really is aimed at the corporate world.

So you should judge it as that, not as "a linux distro, for linux people"
