I disagree with you, and agree that it is becoming widespread. The last four companies I have worked for allowed telecommuting at varying levels. All are in the Fortune 500 (one in the top ten, two in the top 100, one the top 250) and I am in the United States.
Currently I telecommute full time. Is it the norm yet? No, but it will be. Everyone involved saves time and money.
