  1. No, they're not worth it. on Are Virtual Worlds Worth It? · · Score: 1

I would take a great game with good plot over a game with flashy graphics anyday. Game developers/designers should try and ride the happy medium. A good game should have good graphics, but it should have a well developed plot as well. There are some games that do just this, such as Grim Fandango, from Lucas Arts - it was a ton of fun.

I'd rather see game companies spend more time on plot and less on graphics.

I think you have two options. Simply lie about the cost of the materials you are shipping. Tell them that it costs $2.50; maybe you're shipping a broken disk drive to your friend for some reason.

Option 2: Find a friend going to Russia and have him/her physically take the package with them.

  4. Why does the FBI get to select the University? on University to Review Carnivore · · Score: 1

What's to stop the FBI from choosing a university, or a specific department in a university, that get's major funding from the government, or the DOD. In which case it would be in the university's best interests to find only a few or minor "flaws" in the carnivore system.

Shouldn't, instead, it be a court or some other third party that gets to select the review board?

You could be sitting at your desk, and a window pops up on your screen asking if you'd like to participate in todays votes. You have the choice to vote on whatever national or local policy decisions are being made that day. You also have the choice to abstain. The problems? First, the digital divide. The haves and the have nots. Those of us with computers, or access to computers and the internet are the ones that get to make decisions about our country. The rest, the less privledged than us, have no say in the matter at all. The other problem is corruption. Would you really trust the government to run a system like this? It would be quite easy (or easier at least) to rig an election, or have a bill pass. Plus, this system would be vulnerable to hackers. Sorry, today's election has been postponed due to a buffer overflow.

If they forwarded your email to the intended recipient @hotmail.com, then that would be pretty spiffy.

Maybe we should all boycot IE. Not hard to do for Linux users, since [almost] all linux users use NS. But if we got support from WaSP and maybe made it easier for people to download alternative browsers, such as NS and opera, we might have more support from all of those Windows users out there.

  11. Re:Cost of CD's too high on Shut Down Metallica, Not Napster · · Score: 1

I was taking those things into account. First of all, your numbers are extreamly conservative. While many "average" artists might only sell 100,000 CD's in the states, they will probably sell many more than that world wide. Metallica specifically sells well over 1,000,000 CD's. Producing the pysical media costs well under $1/each. You can have 1000 CD's mastered for $.50 each quite easily, I'm sure the record companies pay in the $.15-$.30 range. I agree, they do pay for recording, marketing, and all of those other goodies, which cost them a lot. Tour support is paid for by the tour. Bands like Metallica make millions of dollars on tours. Even so, lets use your numbers. If they make something for $6 and sell it for $9, that's a 50% markup, which is huge for any industry.

  12. Cost of CD's too high on Shut Down Metallica, Not Napster · · Score: 1

Metallica should be more worried about the price of their CD's being artificially inflated by the music companies. CD's cost, in bulk, under $1 each to master (including the costs for paying all of the people involved in it), yet they still manage to charge up to $17 or even $18 at your local mall Sam Goody. Most kids who listen to Metllica can simply not afford to spend this much money for CD's.
