  1. Redsign of ./ on Slash 2.0 Released · · Score: 1

When ./ moves to 2.0, I wonder if we're finally going to see a redesign of the site.

Other sites that run slash like Plastic and Slashcode have a much nicer and slicker interface. I especially like how plastic says how long ago each article was posted. Also things like having your karma displayed on the front page is nice too.

  2. Sillyness on New Microsoft Feature: Planned Obsolescence · · Score: 1

I know no one is going to read this because htere are already 200 posts, but this is just stupid and slimy.

How many companies out there still use DOS based computers, or still have a pentium 90 with 16mb of RAM? How many still use old copies of netware? Tons and Tons and Tons. Why? Because why should they pay for new software when the old software (and hardware - requiring a new OS every 3 years, essentially means that users will have to buy new hardware too) still serves their purposes perfectly. Now M$ will tell them that it /doesn't/ work for them, and that they need to buy (BUY! NOT RENT!) new software.

This isn't the first time that something like this has happened. Apple's powerbook 5300 caught on fire in the exact same manner.

At one point you could trade in the 5300 for about half off on a brand new pismo (firewire g3), but I don't think they have the same deal on the snazzy Titaniums.

On another note, I had a Compaq Armada die on one of my users the otherday. Airborn express picked it up on a wednesday night and I had it back from them on Friday morning, in great shape! A one day turn around! that was aweomse.

  4. Treating net users like thugs on Implications Of The International Cybercrime Treaty · · Score: 5

This is aweful. It treats all net users as if were a bunch of thugs who are out to get pr0n, pictures of little girlies, and while we're at it, run DOS attacks on servers just for fun.

Maybe they should concentrate more on forcing companies who provide servers and services to make sure things are secure. How about forcing MS to put out security patches for NT/2000/IIS as soon as they find out there is a problem. Then making sure that these patches are readily available. How about making sure companies like verisign don't hand out certificates to anyone claiming to be MS.

I mean, really, we don't live in singapore. We don't need to be flogged everytime something bad happens. It should be the governments role to make sure companies make secure products, not to turn the internet into a police state.

That's all well and good, but let's face it: Most people want colored email. They want to be able to change the font size of their emails, and have bold and underline and italic. All things you can not do with plain text.

You can quote RFC's till the cows come home, but people still want red text.

  8. Linux World on NSA + VMware = Crackproof Computing? · · Score: 3

I saw at the VMware booth at linux world expo yesterday a demonstration of a product called VMware GSX, which is not out yet, but is going to be their "enterprise level" product. Rather than running a virtual OS on top of a real OS, it runs multiple VM's straight on the hardware level.

  10. Better Ways to spend the money on Kids and Computers · · Score: 5

    Jon,

The issue doesn't get people fired up for a few simple reasons.

It's simply more important to get more books and new copies of books into kids hands than it is to get them new computers. It's also much cheaper to buy a book (or a dozen books or even a hundred books!) than it is to buy one computer!

It's also more important to spend the money on qualified teachers. Getting more teachers with more experience and better qualifications at the head of classrooms with smaller class sizes than it is to put net access infront of kids faces.

It's more important to spend that money on field trips. Do you think kids want to look at web pages about dinosaurs or they want to go to the American Museum of Natural History and see the fossils for themselves!

And honestly, if you sit and 8th grade boy infront of a computer, do you think he's a) going to sit there and look at what the teacher wants him to look at or b) he's going to spend his time trying to find ways to get to the WWF website when the teacher's not looking.

Not that I dislike .museum, but it seems like it's not going to be as widely used as some of the others.

  13. Banner ads will change to somethign else on Internet Ad Network Commentary · · Score: 2

I was reading a few weeks ago that most people agree banner ads are mostly useless at this point. 90% (or higher!) simply ignore them.

The future for advertising on the internet is to make it more like television and radio where the program (or in this case the web page) is interuppted by an ad. Example: You are reading an article at nytimes.com, after about 5 minutes or so the web page redirects you to another page which is entirely an ad. You're forced to watch it (some flash animation perhaps) for 10 - 15 seconds then it brings you back to the article.

Most people won't stand for this you say? Well, what if we're not given a choice. Companies will simply adopt this form (or something similar) of advertising without giving us a choice. There was a time before banner ads when most people thought that any ad on a web site was silly.

I remember taking a tour of the FBI headquarters in DC when I was a kid. They had a picture on the wall of two guys. One of whom had been mistakenly arrested for a crime the other (it turned out) had commited. They arrested him, because his fingerprints matched the ones at the crime scene. Turned out that the two men had identical fingerprints (or near enough).

The nice people at the FBI made it sound like this was a 1 in a billion chance (which, technically, would make it so there are 6 other people out there with the same finger prints as me!), and that it was a freak thing. I'm inclined to agree with that.

I can't figure out why the above was modded down. It's a good point, the calendaring features of Outlook/Exchange are really nice to have. And beign able to have a calendar for resources, a conferrence room or a project, are really good features that you don't get with Sendmail. You can get them with Lotus Notes or with Netscape Calendar, though.

Homeless people, for example, can't vote because the have no place to have their voter registration card sent to. If all ovtes were based on fingerprints, for example, then everyone would get a vote.

I tried following the instructions at the bottom of the emails; it didn't work. I tried replying to the emails, asking politely to be taken off. I tried CC'ing those replies to various emails @yankees.com (root, abuse, spam, www, etc). They all bounced. I tried sending rather rude and vulgar. Still nothing.

I went to Yankees.com and looked for some sort of contact info. NOTHING!

Finally, I noticed something at the bottom of the site saying "Powered by ultrastar", so I went to their website, ultrastar.com, found their phone number and called them up. I got the reception desk, and asked to speak with whomever was in charge of yankees.com. I got a very nice lady on the phone, and explained my situation to her. I gave her my email address, and have never gotten another email from yankees.com again.
