A single tear fell from my eyes while reading this.
I am the 'short bursts of massive productivity' type of person and I try to keep those bursts confined to business hours. I have often had co-workers who are doing the same amount of work in 16 hour shifts get praise for being dedicated, when they are just slow and make so many mistakes they spend half the day correcting them.
Give me goals. Give me deadlines. Go away.
I am not shocked, nor do I believe this is anything new. That has nothing to do with the original comment or my reply to your comment. Shall we try to stay on topic? Your claim was that the 'poiliticians and spooks' are better equipped to decide what is of national interest than a citizen. I disagree strongly. It should be obvious with very little research to see that I am not alone in thinking that those same politicians and spooks are not working for you, but against you.
No, the poster above probably is referring to people who are actively (see a common root there) working against the actions of their representatives. I understand that your own government using the same tactics as these regimes you seem to despise so much against their own citizenry is causing you to have some mental stability issues, but that doesn't mean the rest of us are as confused.
Your government is treating your citizens as enemies. Defend them all you like, most of your countrymen do not agree with you.
And that contrasts so starkly with your presumably more intelligent belief that the "politicians and spooks" have anything but their own interests at heart. No, wait, it doesn't.
What is in the national interest at this point would be alloying the citizens which make up the nation to know what shady garbage their representatives up in the high castle are shovelling down their throats daily.
Some operative words there in case your fox news filter hasn't added them as talking points yet: Citizens make a nation
Politicians are supposed to represent those citizens
What is in the national interest is EXACTLY what is of interest to the citizens
Your government officials are not acting as representatives, but as babysitters. Babysitters who are minding functionally retarded children.
In your case they might be on the right track.
1, Many employers no longer accept hardcopy applications, they instead point you at a webform.
2, Many rural high school students have no access to (outdated) encyclopedias outside of school hours, yet are required to do research during homework.
3, Many college professors post their lectures online with notes, and these are not available offline.
4, Much of our modern social interaction is done online rather than by phone or face to face
5, Self improvement is made almost trivial if you have internet access.
6, More progressive countries have already declared internet access a basic human right.
I believe this might be enough to convince you if you are willing to put some thought into it.
If, however, you are not willing to actually think about it without yelling about lawns and the good ol' days when kids stayed off them, then there is nothing we can do to convince you.
Lots of people get by without flush toilets and electric lights, this does not mean we are not in need of ubiquitous sewer and electric systems.
I would like to see some citations of Canada buying any 'resources' from the loonies (cwutididthar?) down south.
Last I checked. the USA generally buys oil, water, electricity, meat, grain, and lumber from up north, not the other way around.
You stopped being a an exporter of resources many many moons ago.
they often have business objectives to worry about that are more important than making sure the security is top notch.
WTF?? so you are saying they have stuff like acquiring information and goods to do. which will make them money. and they don't have time to ensure this information is safe?
I have a diamond operation. i'm way too busy pulling diamonds out of the ground to hire a security force at my diamond storage facility.
I don't know anyone personally who has told me one positive thing about Vista, or stayed with it more than two months.
You insensitive clod! My install of vista has been sitting on a partition 'just in case' for about 6 months.
Doesn't mean it has been booted. but its there.
Ouch. I'm turning 30 this year. so you're telling me i have supersensitive balls, and a gunt to look forward to?

so a few hundred K on making kernel potter comfy while en route to baghdad. sounds retarded, but no more retarded than 95% of the ways taxes are spent on the military.
In some of these villages a cellphone hosted by a local is the equivalent of an ATM. sibling in the city can pick up a long distance cell card call the local 'cell guy' and give him the code for more minutes. 'cell guy' in turn provides cash or material goods for the family of the caller after taking his fee. Just being able to send some income back to the village from a remote employment opportunity without traveling is a major boon indeed.
Just another example of technology being used in ways that weren't exactly planned for.
Kudos. this is great. I went to a small rural school where a lot of the teachers used a somewhat open sourced tact when creating yearly curriculums. that way all the differing classes could have some sort of continuity. and by using/re-using each other's work they took quite a load off of an overburdened group of people. now with this taking over perhaps the wiki style implementation will allow for a larger group of educators to have something of a similar system. the time and monetary savings could be put to some great projects that there was never time or finances for.
It seems to me that the employers who would judge someone on their facebook profile are probably the ones who are doing lines of coke off some 13 year old boy's backside while beating an endangered species to death with a pvc pipe. So what if johnny Q public got drunk and tagged the big girl at the party? So what if he smoked a little grass on his way home from work? The people who put the spin on these things to make them seem evil or bad employee material are simply filtering the things these people are doing in their private life through their own demented view of reality.
Yes we should all be a little more private about our private life. but let's face it. the things I do after work are mostly harmless and mostly not worth considering private. If you want to delineate everything you do outside of your workplace as private then you probably don't have a facebook or myspace account. Those that fear being seen for their actions usually are not that into social networking.
a receiver for radio that fits in my pores... you have no idea how long ive been waiting for this. Now we just have to wait to buy a thimble full of nano headphones to dump into our inner ear and we'll be set to listen to all the advertising and rush limbaugh the human mind can take.

So, essentially what your well-worded retort says is that US citizens have no fear of their inalienable human rights being revoked. but other humans, whom you deem aliens, are subject to the whims of an increasingly paranoid military complex.
Forgive me if this seems somewhat contradictory to me. your constitution is a set of rules for your government to follow. Should these rules not apply to all humans? regardless of their immigration status? I do agree with making exceptions for "enemy combatants." But applying habeas corpus selectively based solely on country of residence seems to me like a slippery slope.
**caveat** I am not american and my knowledge of your governmental inner workings may be incorrect. I don't mean to sound combative (for fear of possibly being sent to gitmo.(j/k)) I am truly curious if you are ok with revoking 'inalienable' human rights to humans who happen to have the handicap of not being born within your borders.
Yours fruitfully,

Sorry if my tone seemed a little peevish. I am the definitive example when explaining the old addage. "Don't assume it makes an ASS out of U and ME"
I also find myself in the group of upgrading a couple of times a year with the 100-150 dollar price range. I think a lot of people have underlying issues within their Operating system and/or game game configurations that provoke them to believe their 150 dollar AGP card can't be used for anything. I personally run outdated hardware at all times and can play most games that were released in the last year. Mind you, I play at lower settings than some. usually 1024x768 as max resolution, and many water/bloom effects turned off. (who needs to the natural light of the sun reflected in realtime to get a headshot/kill the hydra)
games that run 'fine' to me bf2, q4, CSS, city of villains, guildwars, WoW, eq2...
