  1. Re:Require pay and benefits parity on Microsoft Says H-1B Workers Among Those Losing Jobs · · Score: 5, Insightful

Why should it be different for a country? If they can't compete by providing the skilled labour necessary why should a company be forced into 'purchasing' the less skilled labor?

Because it's not fair when companies can shop all around the world for the cheapest prices on necessities (e.g. labor), while the common US citizen cannot shop all around the world for the cheapest prices on necessities, such as food, housing, education and health care. In other words, the competition is between US employers and US labor, and the employers have an unfair advantage.

  2. Re:Quality of Silverlight vs hardware? on Netflix Extends "Watch Instantly" To Mac Users · · Score: 1

I tried the Silverlight beta on my 2.0 Ghz Core2Duo Macbook this morning. Quality was pretty bad, Activity Monitor showed it was streaming at something like 500 Kbits. My Netflix Roku box consistently streams at 'highest quality', which is about 2.2Mbits, and is generally quite acceptable on a 40" 1080P LCD. Both the Roku and my Mac are connected over 802.11g to a Linksys router on a 6Mbit ADSL. I'm quite happy with the Netflix Roku player, and though the selection isn't all the latest, I haven't run out of things that I enjoy. They have ALL of Red Dwarf, and all of Xena, Warrior Princess. When I want the newer stuff, I have Netflix send the DVD or BD. I'll be removing the Silverlight plugin, I'm no fan of MS.

Paranoid? I don't think so. Implanted RFID would, at best, solve some non-problems, and inevitably, be misused. Kind of like computer voting machines. To me, the bad outweighs the good.

Wrong - on a PowerBook or MacBook Pro, it's an ac voltage of about 50vac, easily measured with a cheap meter, and not present when the power brick is properly grounded.

  6. Re:Shocking MacBooks... on New Dell Laptops Give Users a Literal Shock · · Score: 1

The problem is exactly the same on the aluminum PowerBooks and MacBook Pros, and only occurs when the power supply isn't grounded correctly. In other words, when using the 2-prong plug, or using the 3-prong plug into an incorrectly wired socket. On the PowerBook - the voltage is ac at about 1/2 of line voltage, but it's not able to deliver enough current to cause more than a tingle. I've measured it. It's annoying, but it's not dangerous. You can be sure that Apple and Dell are aware of it - it's an unavoidable part of the design.

I agree completely, and I'll go further. The disadvantages of electronic voting cannot be gotten around - it cannot be trusted. Ever. We don't need it, and it's just another step away from a functional democratic system. We don't need printers and paper trails. We need traditional, diverse, impossible-to-centrally-subvert voting systems. I'm a computer geek - but this is one area where computers do not belong.

  9. Much As I Love My Macs... on Dell Laptops Have Shocking New Problem · · Score: 1

This is also true of all aluminum PowerBooks, and probably the MacBook Pro. More detail: When the PowerBook is connected to AC power using the two-prong plug (they're shipped with both 2- and 3-prong plugs), there is about 50vac present on the aluminum case. This is normal, though most people don't know about it. The good news is that it's a high-impedance source for this voltage. In other words, it's capable of supplying only a very small amount of current. Not nearly enough to injure you under any circumstance, but enough to cause an uncomfortable tingle. Using the 3-prong AC plug into a properly grounded outlet, this voltage is not present on the case.

Something I've never seen questioned in all these discussions - What's the point of going electronic? The old systems, while far from perfect, were not bankrupting the society, and through their clumsy diversity, were resistent to centralized attempts to manipulate the elections. My feeling - the true cost greatly outweighs any legitimate benefit. This is a case where we should all 'Just Say No'. I'm certainly a computer person, but I don't think everything needs to be done using a computer.
