"Cramming all of that functionality into PID 1 as a unwieldy monolith seems like such a deeply flawed exercise." - from the info i searched out only systemd appears to be the only process running on PID1 - http://0pointer.de/blog/projec... - maybe i'm reading it wrong
"But when the systemd developers started trying to embrace, extend and extinguish other things like syslog, core dumps, etc." - how are they doing that? you still get all those with systemd - http://www.freedesktop.org/sof...
But the kernel is monolithic, any complaints there or do you recommend using Hurd instead? See Myths 1 & 6
"Literally everything inside systemd is intertwined using the D-Bus". - see Myth 30
"So yes, a crash of one of the systemd daemons might cause deadlock/hang or even crash of the rest of the systemd, and consequently affect the processes running under it." - systemd can monitor dæmons (only if they use the systemd watchdog facilities) and automatically restart them if they stop talking. http://0pointer.de/blog/projec...
I'm in the same boat. Is linux so unreliable and prone to disaster that "kill -1" used on a regular basis? There seems to be so much whining about "systemd", you just can't work out how much is complete FUD and whats a genuine gripe. Most of the gripes seems to be neutered by the Myths page http://0pointer.de/blog/projec...
"Obama is hands down the worst president so far in my lifetime." fuck me, you think George W Bush was better when he left such an economic mess for the next person to clear up, not to mention starting illegal wars? Please don't vote next time
sort of but Gnome locked all the config away as they deemed users to stupid to confgure thjeir desktop, KDE are doing it differently by planning to keep it but simplify its presentation to the user
"Since I last posted, the pledge from the parties behind the No campaign for more devolution powers have already fallen apart. A lot of people voted no because they were promised a more federalised UK" - i'm sure there is going to be a lot of ups and downs during the negotiations for additional powers.
If i could have voted, i certainly could not have voted for someone who kept saying they will have a currency union and EU membership when all the powers to be had told him "no chance" and told no for good reasons and not through childish spite. he was a bit like that Iraqi mouthpiece saying they were going to win the war with the US tanks already parked on his lawn.
good points. the majority of the young make choices emotionally which is why the YES campaign did as well as it did, whereas the older ones have a bit more worldly experience and think things through as bit more rationally.
i sort of agree with you but i prefer the situation to a Presidential one. we just need to return a lot of the land and money the royals took from the poor people during their tyranical reigns of yesteryear
"Especially when idiots from the UK get upset that you say they're from the UK, because they'll promptly and furiously reply with "I'm British! I'm not from the UK, I'm from Britain." thats a new one to me. I'd understand if you accused a Scot, Irish or Welsh person of being English (because you don;t know the difference between England and UK/Great Britain which seems the case) instead of being, at a minimum, British
Progress ?

How do you do it with systemd?
a great load of well thought out and articulated reasons not to use "systemd" there... i'm sure it'll sway everyone to your point of view

or am i missing something

"It is amazing how many properly run systems can cope with a "kill -1 -1" to reset everything without a reboot."
out of interest, just how many properly run systems need "kill -1 -1" and how often?
go and read this first http://0pointer.de/blog/projec..., there is a section on monolithic design

KDE has that worked as well, they use Kiosk mode to lock down a config rather than remove all config options
When the price difference is soo high between storage sizes on iPhone when SD storage is sooo cheap, its a rip off
Its the difference in SD storage prices that's alarming, i can buy 16GB SD card for about £10, 32GB for £15, 64GB for £20
"Many of us are under the spell of dead Jesus of Nazareth." - thats even more deluded, at least Steve Jobs was a real person

Silverlight was created to try and EEE as usual

i am glad Scotland remains in the Union

you mean the UK government. England is the only country in the Union without its own government, we have to take all the shit from the UK government
thats a fucking shit excuse if you believe in a fair trial and justice. if you can't see the what congress is really doing then don't vote next time.
Most of the rabidly religious from Scotland ended up in the bible belt of the USA and ruined that part of the country
