Me? If I want a driver then I hire one for a set period of time. It's usually in 4, 8, or 16 hour slots - sometimes with a change in drivers. I typically only hire a car service when I'm at my place in Henderson because I hate Vegas traffic. It's really not that expensive unless you get something stretched. An added bonus is that if I'm going to gamble a bunch then my driver is usually also a security professional. I treat them like humans, invite them in with me, and entertain them as well as myself.
If Uber could legally offer such a service then I might consider it. In fact, a tip of the hat goes to ALV in Vegas - great company and great service. Fun people, professionals but humans. Fair pricing too. *nods* No, no I don't have a nickel invested in them, I've just used their services enough to be happy with them. They've got a nice line of sedans and have always been able to exceed my expectations. If Uber could do that then I'd consider switching assuming they were lawfully operated.
That's really been my only contention and I have stated it before but, you know, what's the point of the same articles over and over if not to repeat yourself? We don't let Microsoft break the law. We don't let BP break the law. We don't let Uber break the law. There's no altruism, there's greed. I have zero dollars invested in Uber - I'm not going to support them. If they can, at least, attempt to hide their criminal behavior then I'd probably consider it but, come on now, you have to at least TRY to hide it. I can't invest on ethics alone, sorry altruists, but I can actively avoid funding companies who flagrantly violate the law.
And no, I don't own shares in any taxi companies either. I won't even ride in a taxi. It's not like I have some strange taxi fetish nor some love of silly laws. This isn't civil disobedience, it's breaking the damned law for fun and profit. I don't even have the berries to do that and I'm a straight up asshole. Even I have some limits. This crosses one.
Umm... I believe both sides of the House are controlled by Republicans. Obama is center-right by any real definitions. How much further right do you want us to go before enough is enough? You realize that extremism isn't a good thing, right?
And this is from a guy who doesn't really like Uber because I don't think a business should just be able to ignore laws they don't like - that's a bad precedent. Why is it okay when Uber violates the law but we get irate when Microsoft does it? That's not acceptable nor does it make sense. "Well, we like them and don't like the law so it's okay if they break the law." How about when someone on the right doesn't like the environmental protection laws and feels it's okay when BP dumps a bunch of oil into the Gulf? It's nonsense then and it's nonsense now.
Get the laws changed and then operate your business. Breaking the law to make money is not acceptable no matter who does it AND no matter how bad the law is. That's not civil disobedience, that's criminal behavior. Regardless of how you interpret the Citizens United, corporations are not people - they don't do civil disobedience, they just break the law when they operate unlawfully. There's no altruism here, just greed - and you're helping them.
I had a girlfriend, sort of, at one time and she was what most people would probably call emotionally abusive. I ended up getting a lawyer to help extricate me from the situation. I actually paid her off to go away. I gave her a brand new Honda. I get pretty stupid when it comes to a vagina. You'd think I'd get better with age, I don't. I've a nice girlfriend at the moment. Things are still new but they're going well. She's really too young for me but I'm okay with that. I made sure that she had no idea about who I am or what I had in my bank accounts (well, credit union accounts) before hand. Then things got a bit serious so, even prior to sleeping with her, I showed her a few of my accounts and she asked if that meant we were still going to dinner which was the absolute best response. Then she joked about having a sugar daddy which was a joke and we laughed.
Anyhow, I've only really had the one abusive relationship. I cut that one short as soon as the behavior started. I don't, honestly, know what makes people do it nor do I know why they're attracted to it. It doesn't make any sense to me. In my case, I noticed straight away and was not going to stand for it. I can't imagine why anyone would - I simply can't get my brain around it. Maybe I'm just not smart enough or I'm not dumb enough? I don't really know... I let it slide a few times, probably three total. I figured they were just in a shitty mood but it hit suddenly and with a vengeance - I still sometimes get drunken hate emails. I gave her a car and money and sent her home to her family back down south. To hell with that...
I do understand what you're saying about jumping in. I know I shouldn't. I don't regret it, really. I regret the way the legal system dealt with that and I'm sorry about the police officer - if he'd said something then I'd have done nothing but he just grabbed me from behind. I didn't think - I responded. Hell, blame my lack of self-control as that's really where the fault lies. I spent a total of eight years in the Marines and took every single level of MCT (Marine Combat Training) so my body just responded. That blame is all mine.
If the situation were to happen, exactly the same, I'd probably do the same thing again. I know, I know... I just can't sit idle and watch someone get hurt - if it had been a guy getting his ass kicked then I'd have stopped her too. (I'm sure I'd have been much less rough.) I wasn't really hurting the guy on the ground. I was just slapping him around and asking him how it felt to be beat like a bitch. (I'm kind of embarrassed. But, well, I own it, I did it.) It clearly violated the law when I stepped over the line and had made it so that he was no longer a threat. I plead guilty and was guilty. Should that happen again, rather unlikely, then I do hope I'd stop prior to that - I have stopped drinking (after many years) and so that shouldn't be a problem.
I'm also a bit perturbed, after all these years, that the officer didn't even get out of his car until after I was involved. He claims he didn't witness it until after I was involved but they were rather loud and quite obvious in their antics. He smacked her twice while I was approaching. Then I said something and he turned to face me to say something along the lines of, "Mind your fucking business." I didn't let him finish. *sighs*
So, lesson sort of learned. Like I said, I can't stand idle - I don't think I have it in me, even if they're armed. What I need to do is stop when it is time to stop, legally, should it happen again. I'm still really kind of baffled by the whole thing - I just can't wrap my head around why someone would take the abuse. I can't even figure out why they are abusers. I guess the numbers say that it goes both ways and that it's 25% male on female violence, 50% equal abuse, and 25% female on male abuse. Both ends don't make sense to me and the middle makes even less sense.
I guess, like you wisely stated, they're attracted to one another. There's got to be a way to break the circle, though. Is it human n
I tend to treat them like big dumb animals, herd animals at that. It works. Keep eye contact, don't show fear, don't turn your back, speak firmly but clear, etc... The whole Kansas thing was just them being way over the top and, at that point, I knew they were just trying to find me doing something stupid. They weren't pleased and told me to get out of Kansas, never return, and if they ever saw me again they were going to arrest me - none of which was even remotely possible legally but I amused them and left. I was leaving anyhow.
They're not mine - it's not my hobby. But, you'll see... Have fun with that. Sorry for your loss if you're a hobbyist. You should have punched the idiots in the nuts. Now you're going to get all sorts of kneejerk regulations. You've been warned. I suspect you won't come back to admit your error in a few years. That's okay. I'm used to it.
I guess, well, I speak from age here. Things get tempered over time. They may be loud but they're a minority. Most of the feminists that I've encountered are, indeed, egalitarians. There are exceptions and, as you said, they're a vocal minority.
Anyhow, I've played Pong and Pacman. I've yet to run around banging pixels back in forth in real life and I've not once chased dots and then eaten fruit and chased ghosts. Try like I might, I just never got any LSD quite that good. I imagine that violence isn't caused by video games while some violent people may be prone to playing games that are DEEMED violent in nature. Hell, it may even be a good outlet for them. I'm not sure what that ties in with, though.
Still, don't worry. It blows over. Hell, I raised a question on the semi-official Cannonical Ubuntu support site - the AskUbuntu, meta section, at StackExchange. StackExchange is closed source. Cannonical's One service (cloud file hosting) was closed source even. So, a major Linux distro makes it easy to install proprietary drivers, uses a closed source support site officially, and has had closed source file hosting. Even the number of zealous open source folks don't get listened to when it comes to major instances. Things are tempered by the rational and blow over with time.
However, and finally, let it be clear that I'm very much against discrimination, of any type - based on innate traits. I do discriminate where it comes to talent - if you're good then I want you on my team. What your plumbing is, who you sleep with, the color of your skin, or the deities you worship are of no importance to me. You're an equal until you prove yourself as a lesser. If you can't hack it then get out of the way and let someone else do it - you're only slowing things down.
Warning - I sense my daily novella coming on. Feel free to read it, think about it, reply, etc... The email address at the top of my post also is valid and checked regularly. I'm David in case you're curious.
The current thinking, by the way, is that people would need to be able to be mobile and able to relocate for periods of time - maybe even extended periods of time. Think Geek Squad meets LinkedIn meets StackExchnge meets Slashdot meets Contract Work - temp agency type thing. Mostly for the Graybeards who are truly talented and have worked in the industry for years. People who are the best of the best and can work in their underwear if they want because they're the only ones left who know how to do it and to do it right.
On-site, remote, etc... Work in COBOL? QNX? Old Unix hacker? Can go back and work within the constraints of Java 6.1 or earlier? At the same time, people who grep languages in an instant, Rust? Go? Swift? Can do... The people who wrote the man pages, not the ones that don't read them. Everything from graphics all the way through - we'll find you an expert vetted by their peers - the best of the best. And they will cost you - a fortune. But it will be right and, yes, guaranteed. I figure I can pay salaries until being paid by the companies. But if you accept the job then you, personally, guarantee the work - the salary will reflect this as will the cost. If they change the scope of the contract and you don't approve you get paid - regardless. They can not amend the contract without approval and attempting to do so requires negotiation in other words - with payment in full if you decline. I'm thinking something akin to ISO 9001 (or is it 9002?) type of stuff - say what you do, do what you say, end of story.
No slackers. People who know their shit. Security penetration? Absolutely - we can find experts. Custom programming? No shit... The entire scope - training staff? Absolutely. Seminars? That too. Leading the way as technical leads for a spell to get things running? Why not? We have the talent but it costs - but they get the best of the best. If you can't do it then you probably know someone who can so send them to do it and they'll wash your back. Manus manum lavat. Not small stuff - big stuff and big stuff
I may do an ask slashdot type of post about Graybeards Inc... I'm not kidding - it sounds like an awesome idea. Think Geek Squad only world-wide, very expensive, and wearing a cape and mask is optional. Meaning real geeks who can go and actually accomplish a task that can't be done easily elsewhere. Contract based, of course, and very expensive because they're working with older or very new, cutting edge, tech. Needs some ideas and some formalization but it could work.
Anyhow, I try not to presume but I do have internal guesses. I'm usually a bit polite. I do see that this is likely a problem but - I don't think it's as wide scale as some expect. These people, you probably call them SJWs, aren't exactly mainstream nor plentiful from my observations. If people would stop paying attention they might go away. If there's a problem then, you know what, fix it. There's no excuse for sexism today - none. That is unacceptable. Now, I don't know if there's a problem and all the data I see conflicts with other data - it's a soft science, after all.
If they want to run an experiment then do so - but run one for men only and get meaningful data over a ten year period. Quantify it with data from mixed groups, majority groups, etc...
You definitely need to install it. It wouldn't be there if it wasn't meant to be installed.
Fedora, eh? I hope you get the good stuff like cowsay and fortune. I mean, yeah, those are the most important features besides sl... Choo choo! - Try sl -F - I think that's my favorite.
That makes sense. The US Navy takes their shit serious. They're pretty good, all things considered. They are, bar none, the best on the planet. I'm not surprised to hear about a third but I knew I'd recalled hearing about a secondary. I think they'll be okay. That and, well, they're hardly ever just tooling around the ocean at random and all alone. They tend to be in groups.
They were finding stuff in the ocean back in WWII days with planes and little else. We've got triangulation and last points of contact. I think they'd be okay.
I think you went 0:all but it was an amusing try and I enjoyed reading it. Thanks for the entertainment. But no, no... We'll start with, I'm quite happily retired, have no dog in the hunt, and don't really like shitty cops but haven't actually had any bad interactions except for one and that's with quite a few interactions over my life.
What to finish with... Hmm... Hell, even my 'bad' interaction was just a couple of idiot cops in Kansas telling me that my telling them that they couldn't search the car was probable cause to search the car and then kicking me out of Kansas when I giggled and told them that wasn't true and I knew better. And, before you make your next silly presumption, I'm not white.
You can imagine why the rest of your "rebuttal" is not really very accurate, now can't you? No? Well, think about it. You're dismissed. Thanks for the entertainment.
I am kind of the example of that. I had to pay for my education by joining the Marines and then going back in for another four years to get more GI Bill loving. I was very lucky and while preparing my defense my professor put me in touch with the State Highway Department which happened to be getting ready to do some work. I was modeling traffic. So, it turned into a job which turned into a business. Eventually, I expanded and modeled pedestrian traffic - think malls, supermarkets, even public spaces, etc... This had always been done, to some extent, but we did it "on a computer."
The business was sold to a parent company that does nothing but fill government contracts, pretty much. They do service, support, tech, and even security. You probably can figure out who they are which means you could go back through the papers and online journals and figure out who I am. Which one could then dig into the finances and figure out how much I made. It was lucrative and I don't think I could actually spend all of my money unless I worked really hard at it - I mean, I make more in interest and through investments than I spend so I donate a lot and I try to help those who need it.
I'd never call myself 'self-made' or anything. I was just damned lucky, undeservedly so, and in the right place, at the right time, and in a position where I could risk going out on my own. I think I say that because, while exceptions - I'm not exceptional. I worked my ass off but I can assure you that I didn't work as hard as many who had less success. I think, mostly, I just wanted to clear that up. As you can see, from my prior posts, I'm simply a human and prone to making mistakes. I was just lucky, that's really what it comes down to. There are smarter, harder working, and far more deserving people.
Now, I do think it has something to do with finances. Agreed. Poverty is certainly a primary motivator. I do seem to recall that being discussed (it may have been a TED talk?) in at least one documentary or paper. I do believe that another topic was the intellectuals being uncomfortable or unable to adapt - I presume this is as much speculation/observation as any soft-science really is. Some of them did not appear all that impoverished whilst incarcerated and I didn't go around asking for a list of offenses or compile data - I am pretty sure that would have been frowned on.
I should also add that my longest stint was just over a weekend due to punching a police officer. Some dude was beating on his girlfriend so I did the stupid thing and jumped on him. Someone grabbed my shoulder and yanked and I hit them. The case was reduced to (and I plead guilty to) a simple assault (two counts technically) because he failed to identify himself as a police officer thus I had no way of knowing he was a police officer and was simply defending myself - in a position where there's some legal gray area in North Carolina.
As for the above story, well, I ended up in civil court paying for a whole lot of shit. I mean a lot... A wired jaw was the most expensive plus all of his lost time from work. Then the jackass that was beating on his girlfriend sued me. His girlfriend testified against me. He was arrested with me but she refused to press charges or testify against him as I understand it.
I'm not sure what the moral of the story is. The judge was displeased but ruled in his favor. I was kind of pissed. North Carolina has some "defense of third party" statutes but I guess when I'd taken him off of her and was sitting on his chest and smacking him around (I was very drunk) was beyond what was considered defense. So...
Anyhow, exceptions yes. Not exceptional, by any means. And I really don't know much more other than what I've experienced and have read or seen. I'm absolutely positive that some of it is due to finances but sometimes it doesn't seem to matter. Hopefully that makes sense?
Or you could have just used the radio and someone would have found you eventually. I don't think you'd have been screwed so much as annoyed and not doing a whole lot. It's not like there were pirates, German submarines, or Japanese battleships. What kind of ship where you on that wasn't part of group? I'm no expert or anything but I bet they'd have noticed you went missing and come to find you.
This is like the 8th wise comment that I've seen from the ACs tonight. Is there a full moon or something?
I understand that they're all hardened and heavily segmented so it'd be pretty difficult to take them all out at once though you could probably take out a centralized monitoring area but I think they commonly have a secondary bridge, not in the superstructure, for just such eventualities.
I think it started in the late 40s - well, the idea and tech. A quick(ish) check on Wikipedia has some cryptic information about the Snark. The Snark used astro-inertial guidance and is the earliest one that I know of and was able to find. According to Wikipedia, the project started in 1946 though I doubt the tech was quite ready at the time for the accuracy desired. Consider, also, at that time we were okay with bombing large areas and it wasn't until later, in Khrushchev's reign, that both sides of the Cold War decided we should limit ourselves to targeting military targets only.
The related links are a bit sparse. I know I've seen a documentary, at least one, about this? Unfortunately, I can't remember the name. IIRC, even the Germans were looking at autonomous celestial navigation for their V2 rockets and for any that followed. I believe MIT was involved in the work, I'm positive that I've seen that posted somewhere but, for the life of me, that memory is long since gone. It also may not have been the celestial systems but I could have sworn it was.
Anyhow, there's a link and you can dig on your own if you're curious.
Hand out information without a warrant, and your company goes down in flames for privacy breeches, especially sites like ancestry and 23andme who know really-specific information about you that only you would have.
Yet here we are. No, no... I somehow don't think very many people will care. Sadly. Look at all the riots after the Snowden leaks... Oh, wait...
I think you herped when you meant to derp but that's okay. No, no it's a good thing to need elevated permissions to make changes. I know, it's too hard for you but it's really a nice feature. It takes three seconds to type in a complex password and press enter. And I absolutely want to do it as root. It's a chain of trust - I trust the packages that I get. Why? Because you've gotta trust something so I might as well trust that which has countless other people looking. Does it mean I'm 100% secure? Nope. Nothing is. So we've got limits and functionality all entwined with security. You pick what you want to do and what you're willing to go through to get there. Me? I've got better shit to do than waste my time with extra steps so I trust the packages from the official repositories. Imagine that...
Anyhow, you're an idiot. Have fun with that. The "I'm too lazy!" is a piss poor excuse. Use root and hush or make your own and do it your way. If you didn't build it then quite whining. Modify it yourself to do what you want if you're too lazy to use root or want to use lower privileges. Finally, I don't think Unix (any variant) uses apt-get? There might be one but I haven't met it. It has, of course, been a while since I have played with it.
Ah! That makes a little (more?) sense. I don't use a Mac if I can avoid it. I have, it's a nice OS I suppose. I just don't have the inclination to learn it well enough to be comfortable with it.
Reasonable regulation is good. No arguments here. Not by default at any rate. I think accountability would be nice, for starters. I also suggest we stop letting them store their funds off-shore and tax them for it appropriately.
I could not find the specific version mentioned but it was still a nice listen - thanks. I was pleased. I know the area, well. I've been all over that area - often, I've gone and sat in a bit with various groups or open mic nights at the blue grass fests. I enjoy that whole area - the people are people.
Nope, nothing there. Purging the cache doesn't help either. I guess I'm just going to have to miss out on this wonderful new browser. Oh, the humanity! Oh the huge manatee! HALP!!!
Astonishing? No, not at all. In fact, that's a feature I'm quite fond of. I really like the idea of needing elevated permissions to install software. Substitute User Do (or sometimes called Super User Do) is a great tool that allows you to temporarily act as an administrator, with appropriate permissions to accomplish those tasks, and is quite a good thing - in my opinion.
I'm not sure what you're finding fault in? You mean you want executable files to be able to install without permission? You want to edit system files (gksudo) without permission? No... Not I. Sure, I can create and login as root - I need only set a password as I'm in an Ubuntu derivative, and I'm good to go. I'll take the extra three seconds to type my password, thanks. I'll take the added security and the added peace of mind. I'm kind of fond of it, all told. I can change it, if I want, but I really don't want to.
Hmm... Not sure if serious... I know a similar, slightly higher, number and exactly zero match your description. While absolutely none of them are my friends they are acquaintances and I've had a number of conversations with them about many different things over the years. Now, I suppose, they could be putting on a face/front for me but that seems unlikely and I've seen a couple of them pretty drunk and talked to them while they were inebriated.
I feel icky defending the cops but...
Yeah, exactly none seemed to have that mentality. One had used his service weapon in defense and openly wept about it while drunk. Others indicated they hoped they'd never need to.
Maybe you're just an asshole who brings out the worst in people and assumes they treat you like shit because they have an innate trait? Do you find that most people you associate with are clueless, selfish, pricks who are contrary? I'd not be too terribly surprised if you did - and I bet you'd see it as their character flaw.
Ugh... Cops suck but, yeah, most of them are just humans doing their job. Some of them are actually good people. Do you paint black people with such a large brush? Are you the AC who has been ranting about Jewish people over the past few days?
Actually, I was younger and a drunk. I spent a couple of nights in various drunk tanks or waiting to be bailed out in the morning for things like assaults or simple drug possession. I think you're mistaken or have had some warped view of them - at least in the western world. There seems to be a higher percentage of smart people in jail than outside of jail.
Now, with that comes the caveat. See, the dumb ones are really dumb. They kind of balance it back out. But, per capita, there seems to be a higher percentage of people who are smart. They're brilliant and talented - you should read their books and see their artwork. The thing is, they have to get lucky every time - the law only needs to be lucky once.
Actually, there was a recent article (not long ago) on this very site about some inmates who beat the #1 rated Ivy League Debate Team. They didn't just beat them - they gave them a smack down. On top of that, they did so on the side of the argument that you'd expect to be difficult for them.
I played chess, pinochle, spades, hearts, and a variety of poker games. They're brilliant. They're articulate and genuinely human. Now, sure, there are some really stupid people in jail - and rightfully so. But, per capita, it seemed like a higher percentage were smarter than what I'd experienced on the outside. I think I've even read studies that showed this and that some smart people had a strange predilection to commit crimes - I think they concluded that it has something to do with them not fitting into society well. I'm not sure if it was a study (or a bunch) or a documentary (or a bunch) but I do recall this.
So, yeah... I'm not sure I buy your claim that only a few are smart - comparatively speaking.

Will do. I listened to quite a few more of his tracks. I'd never heard of him before. Thanks! He's not bad. I dare say, I like him.
Some information can be found here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
Cool beans, I'll look it up and watch it. I was only joking when I'd read your post - I was like, "Hey, that'd be a great song potentially."
I went and found it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
I could not find the specific version mentioned but it was still a nice listen - thanks. I was pleased. I know the area, well. I've been all over that area - often, I've gone and sat in a bit with various groups or open mic nights at the blue grass fests. I enjoy that whole area - the people are people.
Anyhow, much appreciated.
kgiii@kgiii-desktop-8:~$ sudo apt-get update
