The verbiage remains the same. The emphasis has changed. After Vietnam, we tell our military members to resist only as long as is prudent. The whole training has been altered. You give the basics, tolerate a but, give more, tolerate a bit, give more, etc... You don't just blab, but you don't withstand torture, like we used to,

I get what you're saying, but I kinda want to disagree. Without Microsoft, we may not actually have had the computer revolution that we had. Windows ran on anything, and software was/became abundant. That ecosystem drove interest and ubiquity.

I don't like to give them any credit, but they really did a great deal of mostly good. Well, sorta good.

Were there better options? Yes. Are there today? Yes. I haven't used Windows on anything but my phone, for many years. I'm not a fanboy, or anything. The landscape would look very different, had they not been there - warts and all.

Maybe a wee bit of credit from the guy who wrote Minix. I'm too lazy to go find his name, I forgot it.

  8. That is amazingly accurate.

  9. The easiest way is actually probably surgery. I've sampled a variety but they often are attached to a horrible person. So, you can probably get one by being nice and offering them companionship and attention. Just a hunch, it has worked for me - this time. ;-)

  10. The new owners did it. I am not impressed. For the record, I am part black. I just don't give random people the right to control my emotions. I don't actually care if they call me names. Hell, I hope it makes them feel better. I ain't scared.

    I do have to wonder...

I haven't published since the 90s. I wasn't very prolific, but I did publish with this company. I don't believe that the agreement granted them sole copyright.

Anyone know if I can just give 'em my work? I don't have the originals, I don't think. (I may? I'm not sure where they would be.) I can get journal access through the university, 'snot a problem. So, I can recover the published versions without much difficulty.

  12. Ah... I have wild rabbits. Most of my food actually comes from this area - either hunted, fished, or from the farm. It's delicious.

I'm also pretty sure this thread is now derailed beyond belief.

It is, for me, better than the init scripts. I offer no opinion, in public, about the remainder. ;-)

I also have no idea why it's trying to be more than an init system. I am pretty sure that's what they said was the goal. I'm pretty sure it's just gonna keep adding stuff until it's all you need to have besides the kernel. I may jump ship, at some point. GhostBSD has been nice in a VM.

  19. I'd never stoop so low as to use a pun. Never.

If you're curious, there was a coup at the coop (I'm pretty sure) which is when the chickens marched their way to freedom and decided to live on my lawn. They didn't all come at once, it was over a period of months. That's a good half mile of chicken hiking. I have no idea how they even knew my lawn existed.

I tried to give them back but couldn't catch them and their owner told me to keep them - that they'd be good for me. Well, they're dirty rotten liars, is what they are. I have since built a chicken house, fed them, and given them refugee status - until such time as the chicken revolt and deal with the coup at the coop. They have given me only a few eggs in return and they're fond of shitting on everything from my woodpile to my tractor.

    Horrible beasts. Horrible...

Meh, I've grown fond of them. I am up to seven and I've purchased zero chickens. The most recent refugee was living in the woods for a while. I fed it and kept feeding it. My earliest attempts to capture that chicken were not very good. So, I used food. Chickens are surprisingly fast, when they want to be.

    Fine... I'll do it.

I have been using a distro with systemd for years, now. It hasn't failed me - ever. I learned a few new commands, and have grown to accept it. I'm not willing to say I like it - but it is easier for me to deal with.

To be clear, I have a small network and nothing of great importance on it. I am also meticulous about backups. It has never stopped me from booting, it has never prevented me from finding problems, it hasn't even gotten in the way.

Are there improvements that would help? Probably. It should probably spit out more accurate information when shit fails to start. That'd help.

Meh... I really don't mind it. At the same time, I understand why other people aren't that fond of it - and it can be a bitch to work with. I have read the stories.

  21. That's what I said. ;-) Though two folks have said there's a proprietary debugger. I am not sure of the validity of that one.

  22. I'd also add that there are times when they respond with behavior that can be interpreted as understanding and, perhaps, communicating. The horse will approach and nuzzle you, for example. Not chickens, though. No, they're just assholes.

  23. LOL I have chickens and a dog. The neighbor has a farm that's got lots of animals.

I talk to the chickens, all the time. They're my miniature dinosaurs. (They are foul beasts and I didn't actually invite them - they just marched their way here from the neighboring farm, quite a feat but not unheard of.)

    The chickens talk back.

The dog does not talk back.

Now, at the farm next door, those animals talk back all the time. I moo at the cows and they moo back. The piglets squeal at me. The chickens are mouthy. They horses snort and whinny.

I don't have any idea what they're saying, and I'm pretty sure they don't actually understand me, but they do actually vocalize back to you. I'm not sure if I can call it talking, but they do make noises back.

  24. There doesn't actually appear to be any source code in the files. Multiple parties have gone over it. It's just Insider Program builds, some tools (that may be handy - as they are special debuggers I guess), and a whole mess of internal nightly builds.

I haven't downloaded the files, but those who have checked it out are people that I'm inclined to trust - based on history. It's largely nothing. The debugging tools may reveal something and someone, with enough time, may be able to disassemble binaries that weren't public and find things that are different - which could, theoretically, find a bug - which could, theoretically, be exploited, which could, theoretically, be done by a malicious party.
