My father showing a gun saved me from getting robbed while on camping trips twice. Yes, something else was wrong, people shouldn't be out to harm or steal from families at campgrounds. Welcome to Earth. Later, the appearance of having a gun saved me a third time. Fortunately no shot was fired in any of these events.
Um, no. As for those first two things, an accidental shooting or the gun getting lost/stolen those things ARE the tiny fraction. As for not being able to get the gun out in time... it should be locked up if there are kids in the house. It should be locked up when the owner is away. Otherwise, if the owner wants to keep it out when home then that is just fine.
Why do we need the whitehouse to tell everyone what system of measurements to use? This seems to me like it should be the choice of whoever is doing the design, it isn't the government's business. If I want to make up own units and use them in my shop I should be able to! That would be stupid of course, but whose business is it?
Don't get me wrong, standardizing on one system would be nice. Only needing 1/2 the wrenches sounds good. Sure, metric is easy to convert between units and in many cases would be easier to use. Decimals aren't always easier than fractions though.. For example, need 16 pieces? Would you prefer to use the 1/16 tick on your ruler or do you want to go with 0.0625?
Ultimately I see more and more stuff is metric even here in the US. We will eventually get there without any action of the President or Congress. Let's let people do this themselves.
Think of your own job. Whatever you do, how much can it cost the company when you screw up? Do you use any expensive equipment? Does your performance affect the decisions of any large account customers? Do you handle large quantities of product or highly valuable products? Can you afford to replace them? That would be the equivalent of taking damages from the individual examiners.
Damages from the issuing office might make a little more sense but ultimately that would just be punishing the tax payers.
What we need is a change in accountability. Performance is measured mainly on how many patents the offices issue. They are constantly being flooded with applications and the idea is that the patent offices need to keep up or this will harm the economy by slowing businesses down. It's also believed by politicians that the number of patents granted to US companies is somehow a valid measure of how our technical industry is doing vs other countries. That attitude needs to go!
Instead, hold patent offices and examiners accountable for quality of patents granted or not granted. This could be measured by percentage of patents invalidated in court and percentage of rejects that succeed later. That last one might be tricky to measure but it would be important too. Otherwise, maybe keep looking for quantity but also look for quality. It should affect their job reviews, raises, promotions and such just like happens for any other kind of worker. If they are really bad... they get fired.
This will mean huge delays in getting a patent granted given the current quantity of applications. That flow needs to be controlled! One sollution might be increasing the cost to apply for a patent so that only worthy ideas are worth attempting. The problem with that is a price that keeps larger companies in check shuts out individuals and small companies entirely. Instead.. I propose an application fee that gets larger based on how many applications you have in the system. Large companies still might get around this by having their individual employees apply for the patents and then transfer them back to the company. Some rules will be needed to prevent this. Maybe something stating that any contract requiring that an employee transfer patents from the employees name to the company are not valid. The company must apply for the patent itself or the employee might use it as leverage for more money or even sell it to someone else.
I don't believe anybody is working on any kind of technology that can do that. Outside of science fiction, if such technology ever exists it is going to be a really long time from now. Real world cloning today just creates an embryo. If Krystal is already in pageants then she is how many years old? I don't think any judge is going to mistake her embryonic twin for her.
Lot's of people are making flippant remarks of "if you want to run Linux then just don't buy it". Ok. Remember, Linux has traditionally run on PCs. PCs have traditionally come with Microsoft operating systems since the days of MSDOS. Things have certainly changed since those days but it's still kind of early to say Microsoft's dominance is definitely gone forever. It's a scary thing to think that Linux might not run on repurposed Microsoft platforms anymore. What if we have no good hardware solutions left to run on? Are we all going to build our future computers out of Raspberry Pis?
Yes, someone will probably break the key. It could take a while though. Even once that is done it's really only useful to a small percentage of enthusiasts. Can you really see a viable future for an operating system whose first installation step is violate the DMCA and break your warranty?
No, it isn't like Fido2. Fido2 probably neither understands or cares that he's a replacement. A child with a parent attempting to force him/her into the mold of a dead sibbling would probably be quite damaged psychologically. That's not to mention what happens when the kid realizes that is the only reason he/she exists. Anyone who does it for this reason is a horrible parent worthy of neither child.
It would have to be all at once, and then hide the fact that multiples exist. It wouldn't be any different than pageant mom lucking out and having twins. 'whipping up' a new clone means getting a newborn baby... 9 months later. I don't think the judges can be stalled that long.
I was going to post this as a response to a comment but it was already getting burried and I bet plenty of others wrote or thought the same as the parent. Cloning will not increase the population! Whenever cloning comes up the 'there are too many people for Earth to support and yet I am not going to kill myself' people feel the need to chime in.
Apparently many people read cloning and see factories full of vats growing thousands or millions of people like something out of Star Wars. Real cloning, as it is likely to exist any time this century is just another way to make an embryo. It's an alternative to conception. The fetus still has to spend the same time inside a mother's womb. The mother goes through alll the same discomforts of pregnancy. If she is willing to go through that for a clone she would probably have gotten knocked up anyway.
Yes, there are potential downsides to cloning. Less genetic diversity, kids growing up being expected to continue their dead gene donor's life although they are not the same person (talk about being in your older siblings shadow). Then there are darker themes like cloning a whole person to get a body part... Population increase? Why would that happen?
Why would we need or want to sign treaties regarding civil rights issues? Don't get me wrong, I'm not against women or children but aren't those more domestic issues? These things can be dealt with through a democratic process involving elected congress writing bills or in some cases a constitutional ammendment (ie right to vote). Treaties are papers that are negotiated mainly in secret and then are rule of law even above those laws which are created through democratic means. I think we have enough problems keeping our elected congress accountable, why give more power to the appointed diplomats?
Ok. Myself, I was quite aware of where Siberia is and what a Post Office is. Here in the US we don't have internet terminals, or at least not ones for the public/customers and I for one do not spend my vacations visiting all the post offices of the many areas of the world. Also, notice the 'y' instead of an 'i' in the summary? I certainly would have guessed this was slang for something before actually thinking they are talking about a post office in Siberia.
Hmmm, in the past companies have used regions to jack up prices in the US more than elsewhere. Have things gone this far? Are we the third-world country getting the better pricing now? Who pays more for their iPhones?
No surprise they had him in solitary, they are going to make it rough on him because he ran. The guy went to Cambodia to avoid a 12 month sentence! Maybe things are a lot worse for prisoners in Sweden? I had a friend in the US who was sentenced for 20. He was out in 2. He would have been out even sooner but they were giving him classes and they wanted him to finish first. Now he has a new career from those classes! He also had access to an exercise yard and a playstation.
Mint Debian Edition? Unless you feel that's just a parasite of Debian but that would be dumb because if it is then so is Ubuntu AND Debian encourages that sort of thing anyway!
Really? Honestly Ubuntu users, if you don't want something that is like Apple why are you still using Ubuntu? Ubuntu variants I can see because Ubuntu is really good at hardware detection and ease of setup but if you wanted to get away from the Apple feel you should have trashed Ubuntu proper a long long time ago! IMHO
Um... I assume you mean out of the box since you can add anything you want to pretty much any distro to get wifi going. In my personal, completely anecdotal experience having wifi working right out of the box 75% of the time would be a tremendous improvement from the main Ubuntu, or pretty much any OS that doesn't come pre-installed!
Not that I would really want to limit myself to "free software only". About your example... I'm just saying..

If it were perfect then there would be no opportunity to switch to Metric 2.0 some day. I'm sure all that retooling creates jobs!
Oh please, metric is all over the US. We just don't use it exclusively yet.
Why do we need the whitehouse to tell everyone what system of measurements to use? This seems to me like it should be the choice of whoever is doing the design, it isn't the government's business. First, how do you know they were old and not teenagers themselves? Second, how many are likely all talk and thus will never be on the list?
Hire them to work at the new facilities. Problem solved. Not particle physicists? Everywhere needs a janitor!

Well, no, hypothetically if they were doing things to make someone else look bad they would want to be seen. Otherwise what is the point?

Make both numbers work in both places - temporarily
Give up on arguing it out, use a coin toss or something similar to pick one.
Set a date to turn off the number not chosen
Advertise the hell out of the fact that the other one is going away for a couple years before actually doing it.
Shoot the next person who recommends anything like this only apply to one limited area in the increasingly global world.
She certainly was!
