In other words; the novelty will wear off in record time, and instead you'll be embarassed. Sure, it wont bomb, $ony and M$ assured that by turning every one against themselves. But, when was the last time any of you played 'Dance Dance Revolution'?

Politic'ing and crystal balls aside, what we do know is that the Wii will feature much of the same cartoony style with very basic game play that makes Nintendo games so much 'fun'?

Personally, when I play a game:

'Fun' dosn't mean 'easy' or 'shallow'.

I expect effort to have been made towards the graffics, otherwise I might as well rip out the 2600 (not that building a game in assembly is exactly 'easy' but you get the point), or better yet; a pen and paper.

I expect a story line that goes boyond random adaptions on the 'generic farytale' theme.

I expect to be challanged not spoon fed. Party games are great in their place, and Wii will be a certain favourite with your drunken friends as they try to move some silly box into some silly hole. But, if I want to play a game that absorbs me and gets into my head, party games do not keep me comming back (Worms 4 aside).

What I need to know; is that am I all of a sudden the only person who expects advances in technology to be more than than just bolt-on gimmicks? What happened to wanting realism in a game? What happened to appreciating finely a detailed fantasy where we can lose ourselves. Has the hatred of M$ and $ony gotten so bad that gamers are forsaking depth for politics? Or am I the last RPG player on earth?

I should add that FPSs belong on Nintendo, basic, boring, point and click; Gag me with a spoon.

Also, on the topic of a quality mature game that was not simply gory. May I submit 'fahrenheit' as an example of a truly innovative game that didn't let its experimentation get in the way of quality story, beautiful presentation and trully intuitive and tactile gameplay.

I was going to mention Cuba, but the last time I dared to mention a communist country I was drowned by cold-war rhetoric.

You mention having your child in a public hospital, have you seen public hospitals in the US and London (as the two obvious comparisons)? Fair enough compared to what we are raised to expect, they are shabby, but compared to what most other countries offer, you'd have chosen a home birth.

As for public transport, you must live in Sydney. Come down to Melbourne, cheap regular and clean (not as reliable as it used to be, but thats what privatisation does for you).

I guess, I may have over stated my point, but there is no doubt that we have one of the best public support infrastructures in the world. Ask any of your American and UK friends; what they think of their public healthcare system.

Scary isn't it? Do some digging, and you'll see we do have one of, if not THE best public healthcare system in the world. From subsidizing drugs (not for much longer) to keep them affordable to all, to actually paying for everything (get hit on a road, and you have a free run till your working again... ambulance, surgery, rehab, loss of earnings the whole shebang, whether the accident was your fault or not. Thats none too shabby.. granted you can thank Labor for it, and the Libs would like nothing more than to have the same setup as the US. But, until then... our system is not to be scoffed at :)

Personally, it seems obvious that the only reason the wombat (J.W Howard) has made any noise at all is because he is a great politician. Now, don't get me wrong; I wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire. But credit where credit is due, he knows how to manipulate politics no other in the world. Right now, he has alot to keep quiet... so what better way to shift the publics attention away from his attrocious; foreign, immigration and workplace policies, than to blow such an inconsequential incident like this out of all proportion. He knows no laws were broken so he can't do anything other than call for an investigation, but that is enough noise for his purposes.

As for being in the stoneage, I ask everyone who is not living in a third world country, and even some who are: Is calling a 256k connection 'broadband', and claiming that it is more than enough, an indication that our govt's view on internet is well and truly stuck in the technological stoneage? I certainly think so.

    This whole concept sounds pointless.

Ok.. So if I'm reading correctly, the point of relational filesystems (future storage W(TF)E) is so that we can blindly drop a file into a pool of data, and trust its retriveal to a database? pfft.. no thanks.

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but when I want to see every photo I have, listed by category I have no urge to type "show me all my photos please, Mr Computer... sir".. no, I type #cd ~/pictures & there they are in all their indexed glory: one index might be called /prOn, and another called /holidays, and yet another called /random within each of these will be /teenies, /fatties, /oldies, /dogs: /christmas, /fiji, /iran, /swaziland: /whatever /etc. Is it so hard to follow the path? Is it so hard to keep anything you might actually want to see in one place? Sure, if you use winblows your forced to put things in stupid places.. but that just means you should ignore winblows advice as much as possible, not implement a whole new layer of bullshit to deal with it.

Speaking of bullshit, after reading all these posts, I have a better understanding of what I didn't get about the concept and confirmation of some things I got. Such as: Ok good idea being able to search your files by tags (not exactly a new concept is it?) but, on the subject of mp3 tags... Am I the only one cold-sweating at the thought of having to tag every piece of media I own... by hand!?

Maybe someone can explain the advantage of tagging application files.. I thought a good app is supposed to know where to find its files, having installed them and all.

Maybe having a wall-less data-pool makes retriveal as low-key as possible, but c'mon... lose one piece of your DB and your fucked.

Point is, if students from third-world countries can make as much of an impact in your universities as the locals, it doesn't speak very highly of your pre-tertiary system does it?
