A Look Inside the PlayStation 3
LifesBlood writes "GameDaily has a peek at an upgraded PS3 development kit, and gives hints as to how the final hardware will shape up. So, what can gamers expect? Robert Workman takes you through the controller, DVD player, GUI and pricing options for the two packages of the PS3."

Since when does 'inside' an electronic device mean discussing peripherals and the on-screen menu?
Oh, wait, no, just lots of stuff that I don't need to be paying extra money for.
Nevermind.

So Zonk didn't RTFA either?

I guess that means there's just not much more left to say about the PS3....
We all knew Zonk doesn't actually read the articles he links to, but this is getting a little bit ridiculous..!
Kutaragi wasn't kidding when he said it wasn't targeted towards households...

Where's the delicious shots of motherboards and graphics chips and big ass heatsinks. :(
Who the hell wants to spend 5-600 USD on a game machine? I'm aware it's going to be able to do more then play games, but what's the reason to upgrade to a high end PS3? Support for another DRM format? My PS2 plays dvds just fine. I can't see buying a PS3 over a Wii or even Xbox with the prices they are now. Sony is either really arrogant that they will own the gamer world, or living in a reality distortion something or other.
"We'll be back with a follow-up article within the next few weeks that talks about the differences between the two, and what gamers can expect from their $500-$600 purchase." For 600USD I damn well expect alot, is any part of it made from gold or will it do my dishes?

Is that the emoticon for vaporware?
The DevKit today and for $600 ... that would probably be a good value. The real thing next year when my soundcard is more powerfull than the whole box - not so much. I never saw anyone accused of being a PC fanboy around here - so far.

That's what I said when I heard about the PS3 price too!

"Since that time, it looks like the controller design has cleaned up a bit, although the people who let us mess around with it informed us it still has yet to be finalized."
:)
um, to launch in about a two months, shouldn't the joysticks be at least complete by this point?
i did like how all the new innovations on the joystick resemble everything already done by Nintendo and MS, way to lead

.. Nintendo is already churning out systems for a launch date AFTER the PS3's! Shouldn't they already have things "finalized", or is it just me?

And Sony's TGS conference starts at 6pm Pacific time today. It sounds like it is going to be insane. Devil May Cry 4, Metal Gear Solid 4, and a ton of other games are all supposed to be shown. From the insane look of the PS3 games at this early stage I guess those PS3 devkits must be pretty fucking sweet to work on if the games look this good already.
I love how the controller takes the movement detection from the Wii, the "Guide" button from the 360 controller and the wireless ideas. They also changed some of the shoulder buttons to be more like trigger buttons..hmm..this controller is sounding more and more like..the 360 controller! Even their menu system sounds a lot like the 360's blade system. Oh well, "innovate" ideas that work well, that seems to be Sony's new motto.

Our dev unit is huge, retail unit may not be. It runs cool, retail may not. We have prototype controlers in our hands but can't tell you how long the battery life is; we just wouldn't know how to test something like that.
"" sums up the article rather well.
Sony says that it doesn't matter - that all games will run perfect on 7, but we all know that it's a lie. I've studied the Cell and know how to tell if all 8 cores are working and I'm going to keep returning my PS3 until I get one that's PERFECT.
Glad to see that they're focusing on the important things.
Hi! I make Firefox Plug-ins. Check 'em out @ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/youtube-mp3-podcaster/
"The first thing we can talk about is the controller. When we last saw the controller for the PlayStation 3, it was a shoddily put together, almost third party-like unit with ugly red sensors on the top and a lack of weight. However, in the redesigned version that is much closer to the model that will reach consumers, the controller has been weighted down with a considerable amount of 18 carat gold. The fans are folded origami, made from 3-ply $100 bills, rolled on the thighs of Cuban virgins. The model we tested had some problems maintaining sync at times, because of the impurities (elevated diamond content) in the Quartz crystal used, but we expect this problem to be solved in the budget bundle."

All I can see through all this vapor is an IBM processor. Wake me up when Sony know's what they are even going to make.

Apparently, when they heard about the price, the Japanese market said this: ...
Ever since I played Chrono Cross for the first time, I've been trying to figure out exactly how to say that.
I got my Linux laptop at System76.
The PS3 menu system is just like the PSP, as the article noted - the PSP shipped well before the 360.
As for the other features, even if Sony borrowed some of them is that not a good thing for gamers? I am happy to have Nintendo and Microsoft and Sony steal the best from each other because I as a consumer get to enjoy the results. Unless you are employed by one of them why does it bother you so to see elements of one design used in another?

You obviously haven't played Hampsterdeath, part of freepuzzlearena.
Anybody who plays freeware or shareware games is a PC fan if not a fanboy, more so if he or she has developed such a game. Anybody who goes on and on about how a mouse is the optimal controller for first-person shooters and real-time war sims is also a PC fan if not a fanboy.
I can't afford a peek at the PS3. I am saving for a glance, though.
News for merdes. Shit that matters.
Ask me about my sig.
I can say it, but it's more of a gesture, really. You look your conversation partner (or whomever you're responding to) right in the eye, you inhale loudly, you lazily point your finger at them, and you exhale loudly and cut it off sharply, like you were going to say something. (You do those things in order, not all at once.)
Used sparingly it's good for a laugh every time it's even remotely appropriate.
This is an old ass article.. except I've seen it with pictures.. We know the PS3 has an internal power supply and yes, it's heavy.
I'd like to think that they have systems made by now. I'd like to see less speculating, and more espionage!

We know the PS3 has an internal power supply and yes, it's heavy.
I have both the PS2 and PS1, and they both have internal power supplies. And you may recall that the PS1 (just "PS" back then) is pretty tiny and light.
I should damn well hope that the PSU is internal on the PS3. If it wasn't, that would be a huge step backwards.

But why would a Ford Pinto need a bad ass exhaust and ground effects?
Unless you can turn 180 degrees, jump, and fire a rocket at the same time, light guns aren't going to replace a mouse any time soon.
As a long-time (but dormant for a couple years now) FPSer, that statement actually sums up everything that I grew to dislike about FPS gaming.
Just exactly why should you be able to turn 180 degrees, jump, and fire a rocket (accurately!) at the same time? Picture trying to actually do this. Even if you're the stereotypical cybernetically enhanced supermarine capable of singlehandedly eliminating an entire alien race by lugging around 150 pounds of high tech weaponry and a thousand pounds of ammunition while occasionally jumping half your own height straight up yet being unable to climb over a barrier that's 51% your height - the recoil of launching a rocket in midair (while spinning, no less) ought to knock you on your ass.
Yes, yes, suspension of disbelief, no one claims the games are realistic, if you couldn't do cool stuff there'd be no point to playing, so on and so forth. It still bugs me. Just like the endless bunny hopping that's another hallmark of the FPS genre bugs me, 'cause it's lame.
