The Wiimote is central to Nintendo's plans for the Wii. The PS3 controller, on the other hand... isn't so critical. Nintendo want the Wii to be to the Gamecube what the DS was to the GBA. Sony, OTOH, want the PS3 to be to the PS2 what the PS2 was to the PS1.

If Sony have to ship with standard-issue PS2 controllers, so be it; the motion sensor jobs will ship later, some people will buy them, and if they don't it won't matter too much because most games won't really use them. If Nintendo don't have the Wiimote ready, though, it's a show-stopper; from what I've seen, most Wii games are going wholeheartedly for the Wiimote. To play them with a Gamecube pad, while possible, would be to miss the point.

We know the PS3 has an internal power supply and yes, it's heavy.

I have both the PS2 and PS1, and they both have internal power supplies. And you may recall that the PS1 (just "PS" back then) is pretty tiny and light.

I should damn well hope that the PSU is internal on the PS3. If it wasn't, that would be a huge step backwards.

Here's another link which mentions that and also mentions the low-end model carries HDMI.

If true, that really pisses all over Microsoft's parade, though no doubt they'll soon be pissing over Nintendo with their own price reductions. The way it's squaring up for $250 you can buy a Wii with all its deficiencies / innovation, an XBox 360 for $299 or possibly less that has superior graphics and multimedia, and for a little more a PS3 that is likely to surpass both of them for sheer brute power, HD support and Blu-Ray to boot. Personally I think the Wii is too expensive for what it is. For "just" a games console it is sailing perilously close to the pricing territory of the 360 which is more powerful and can do a hell of a lot more. At the top end of prices, I think the new price point of the PS3 is going to put a big amount of red on Sony, but it makes the console pretty compelling now. MS are bound to lower their own price significantly in retaliation which is going to hurt Nintendo.

At this point apologists for Nintendo will claim they "only want to play games", apologists for the 360 will claim "they'd buy the HD-DVD if they wanted HD", and the PS3 apologists will claim "they want future proofing". I think I'd fall into the last camp but I will let the beta testers lined up on release day discover if they bought a lemon for their money. If the PS3 is a good console, it'll be a good console a few months after launch - besides Sony have enforced a wait on me by not releasing the thing in Europe. By then it should be nicely tested and bug fixed.

As a long-time (but dormant for a couple years now) FPSer, that statement actually sums up everything that I grew to dislike about FPS gaming.

Just exactly why should you be able to turn 180 degrees, jump, and fire a rocket (accurately!) at the same time? Picture trying to actually do this. Even if you're the stereotypical cybernetically enhanced supermarine capable of singlehandedly eliminating an entire alien race by lugging around 150 pounds of high tech weaponry and a thousand pounds of ammunition while occasionally jumping half your own height straight up yet being unable to climb over a barrier that's 51% your height - the recoil of launching a rocket in midair (while spinning, no less) ought to knock you on your ass.

Yes, yes, suspension of disbelief, no one claims the games are realistic, if you couldn't do cool stuff there'd be no point to playing, so on and so forth. It still bugs me. Just like the endless bunny hopping that's another hallmark of the FPS genre bugs me, 'cause it's lame.
