  1. Re:Mod parent up! on Software Engineering Is a Dead-End Career, Says Bloomberg · · Score: 1

Here's a radical idea: why does all of that money have to be made for shareholders?

    Because they own the company.

Why can't some of it also be for the people doing the work?

The people doing the work do get money, its called their salary. When the workers don't get any money its called slavery.

Bottom line? If you want to make more money, then start a company and be shareholder....just be prepared to take on some additional risk you aren't exposed to as an employee.

It was the end of the world as we knew it. The devs messed up our beloved KDE!! Game over, switch to Gnome. But then came several subsequent point releases and a year later KDE rocks and most everyone is very happy. Lesson? Sometimes you have to go backwards a little to go forwards. Hang in there, it'll get better...

  7. Re:Adobe Lightroom on GIMP 2 for Photographers · · Score: 1

I would agree that Adobe Lightroom that much better suited to professional and high-end amateur photographers than Photoshop. While Photoshop is much more powerful, that power is wasted on 99.9% of photographs. Lightroom has all the important capabilities of Photoshop that apply to processing photographs and in addition has much better workflow tools. Speaking as an amateur photographer, I wish the effort put into GIMP would have been directed towards Lightroom functionality rather than Photoshop. Personally, I think there are WAY more photographers out in Linux land that graphic designers.

  8. His conclusion? Its NOT ready... on A CIO's View of SUSE's Enterprise Viability · · Score: 5, Insightful

The author of the summary is flat wrong when he says the conclusion was "ready for the enterprise". If you actually RTFA the exact words were: "Though he personally is pleased with the OS, Halamka is not so sure he'd deploy it widely in his organization." Incredible that the poster of this article actually gets the conclusion 100% wrong. Biases like this is why nobody trusts technology people for an opinion of the readiness of new technology.

  10. Old News on A 3D Printer On Every Desktop? · · Score: 1

Zcorp http://www.zcorp.com/ and other companies have been making and selling these things for years including ones that print in color. I've watched the price of these things fall from $100k+ to (I think) about $40,000 these days. If $40k is too much for you then email your file to one of the dozens of small 3D printing shops that will let you print out your part for a couple bucks.

  11. Re:I believe in people on Why the World Is Not Ready For Linux · · Score: 1

It is not a question of being smart. It is a question of priorities. To many people, a computer is a tool -- not unlike a drill, a blender, or mobile phone. The only purpose of owning a computer for the majority of people is as a means to an end (i.e. make money, communicate with friends, be entertained, etc.) Automakers stopped making cars that forced owners to understand starters, generators, engine timing, oil changing, etc. a long time ago in order to obtain mainstream acceptance. Linux will need to allow people to obtain their personal objectives without having to be "aware" of the operating system itself. If you are a fan of the "Linux Culture" or a thriving member of the "Linux Community" then good for you. To most people that holds the same level of appeal as being a member of an astronomy club, or a car club, or a bowling league. Its only fun if your into it....

You can complain, but you are reaping the benefits of being the offspring of men who have fought and won many wars. Perhaps you could move to Iraq and enjoy their lifestyle for a few years to compare. Maybe instead of spending over $3 trillion dollars (in 2005 dollars) to fight and win WW II we should have spent it on scientific research. Oh wait, thats right, we would all be dead by now...from either the Germans or the Russians...take your pick.
