So his comment is dead on: "The fact that gmail doesn't implement the final step (nested, or, more properly generalized, 'linked' labels) is something you could bring up with Google instead of making yourself look silly on slashdot with ignorant whining."

Its not physical aging thats the problem. Its that he is out of touch with reality. Which could lead to regression. Alot of people in McCains age group are racist, religious, sexist, homophobic and hold hatred toward countries for things that occured 70years ago. This doesnt apply to all old people but alot of them apply to mccain so i think 'hes to old' sums up his faults quickly. Its like calling microsoft a dinosaur, it has nothing to do with physical health. Anyways, if we intend to move forwards we can't be pushing backwards conservative views.

Why are suits caviar and fancy cars cool? I wasn't saying money wasting is the only way to be cool but it certainly is one way. Brand names are often based on the principle that they are incredibly expensive. Therefore only a certain class of people can afford it. And reversing the logic, if you have the brand then you are a part of that class of people. Of course this logically makes no sense but its how it works. Think about delicacies, often times they are disgusting. But simply because they are rare (seal eyes) they are more valuable.

The reason he was bashing on, ridiculing the idea of ID calling it rhetoric is because it doesnt have a solid foundation. I think he fears people will buy into what the science community knows to be false if it is taught by authority figures in schools. In that case teaching children to watch out for bullshitters would be useful. If we WERE teaching critical thinking and equality of teaching w/e we could not include ID. I'm sure from a critical thinking well developed keen mind pov willing to spend time finding the truth, evolution would come out on top everytime. But GP is worried that this will NOT happen. If children are taught both they will take the project that is 3 words 'god do it' as opposed to the million page monstrosity involved in supporting evolution. Religion is easier, but that doesnt mean its right.

Well the reason western is percieved as worse than eastern isnt too hard.

Eastern religions are ussually/mostly an ETHICAL CODE rather than a full on religion. Christianisty/Judaism/Islam are full on religions as in they have all kinda of crazy stories, gods demons and magic.

Sikhism/Hinduism has alot of that as well, i'd say a little less but thats arguable. Compare that to buddhism which has hardly any tall tales and is pretty much just an ethical code. There are some crazy stories in it too and is subject to extremism but not really. As well the rules for people are far less stringent than those places on monks which leads to fanatasism. And then there is confucianism which is purely philosophical teachings. There is no crazy magic or gods telling you what to do. They are just general guidelines that you should listen to simply because it worked for millions of people in the past. You should check it out too... The point being there is much more room for flexibility. And Taoism ... hasnt done any major harm for a looong time its inherently less dangerous. Same with Shinto ... they haven't done anything aside from decorate japan in hundreds of years.

So yes, eastern religions are far far less dangerous. I'd say most of the wars worldwide in the last 100 years could be attributed in part to the big 3 'western' religions.

This is a great point and i agree. However, stats show that the POOREST people are the fattest. They likely arent worried about the problem you mention. Stats would show that middle class earners should be fat. As the wealthy could afford restaurants and better fast food. And the poor shouldnt be able to afford the more expensive fast food. Goto any McDonalds and look around the fat people are likely to be just above the poverty line. They can afford to make themselves fat but arent sensible enough to eat healthily. A convincing arguement in favor of fat/poor people are lazy and stupid. I do think however that eating out for people above the poverty line is a status symbol. They will waste money they could have otherwise better spent to obtain status. They are better than their peers since they can go eat out and they can get into a higher pool (middle class) if only temporarily. Its the same as bling. Poorer people buy jewlery waaaaaay out of their legitimate price range to get respect. To get a taste of a higher bracket.

Thats a failing in WoW... alot of mmos the penalty for death is much more harsh.

Diablo 2 is a much better example for powerful AIs. As is RO. In D2 there are massive punishments for death, there is a hardcore mode you lose the character if you ever die. So the AI has to never screw up. They also have to play with groups including human players. The maps are randomized as are the monsters stats. A full squad of bots in d2 can always top out human players. Less deaths, faster victories they cooperate better and pick the level clean. When i left the d2 botting scene they were working on a bot that would play the game from beginning to end and level the character to 99 with decent gear. That is a fairly big bite for AI.

In RO they used existing chatterbots to talk to people so they wouldnt get accused of botting. A true live turing test of the bot several times a day it would have to pass. These were tweaked with information in the game for people asking which way something was or if they could have a potion. They would also be able to determine whether or not you were on to it and tried to end conversations quickly. I saw one that would bribe you to not tell automatically after you caught him.

Games are a great incentive to get young coders into AI. It offers a full world to play in and a huge community of like minded hackers. Its disappointing most games crack down on botting so hard i think it should be freely available on an alternate server. Also i should have mentioned kingdomOfLoathing (web based game) that fully allows botting, there are a ton of tools and scripts that have been developed for the game which has a HUGE market much like the stock market, its fun to see some cripts that would make decent money if it played the real market.
