I guess I'm just searching for some ulterior motive, but...
Do any red flags go off when the customer suddenly starts to rack up unusually large fees, like credit cards do? Or are bills like these actually paid off often enough that they just send the bill in hopes that the customer actually means to spend a few grand?
Not remotely an expert on these things, but... could ads also maybe introduce the possibility of competition for products and services with the userbase? You know, like, maybe as a really bad example Joe Schartzenheimerpfuzen offers up an ad for a used-but-in-good-condition PSP, but his page gets a banner flashing "PHYSICALLY HARM POLIITICAL FIGURE X AND GET A FREE* PSP!!!1111" and so forth. Might make it harder for poor Joe to vend off his unit. I know I'd be immediately tempted to blame ad space if I couldn't get rid of that PSP.

Visual Studios and WYSIWYG-majigs can provide huge conveniences (most of the time) to the experienced developer, and as such you will probably want to learn them someday, but when you're learning a language they will tend to leave you with that "I don't really feel like I get it because too much was done for me" feeling. Try to do all your work using a command line (learn to use GNU's Make or some scripts when commands get long) and a text editor (vi, emacs, notepad++, something that doesn't put too many buttons and graphical "helpers" in your face).
I say that mostly as an aside -- I too have the urge to go on for a few paragraphs about the importance of staying problem-oriented and understanding what's really going on backstage, but it's been said and said well.:E
...who did all manner of computering running Windows Me, complete with network, never a hitch, never locked up on him, no problems shutting down or using fancy devices.
All other first and second hand experiences considered, my only standing hypothesis to this day is that he played the install CD backwards.
