    I like this: "Linus, please don't infrenge on microsoft's patents because we will be screwed if we sue and screwed if we don't" I was thinking that we would lose because OSS writers have less money (OSS companys, at least) Does anyone else think that all of this legal crap has gone too far? Let's write software, not sue the s*** out of each other. Does anyone doubt that large legal battles decrease total productivity?

    Well, movies *are* fiction. Lets all stop complaining and go do some *good* hacking. Maybe we should just know that *we* are real hackers and the others are crackers (don't look at my sig now). Wait. What am I saying. OK with the movies being fiction and all, but as for hackers and crackers, lets raise hell :-)

    Actually at the beginning of the year in english, we had to write a personal naritive (as if anything intresting has happened to 8th graders) I wrote mine on me writing code at 2AM for my encryption program. It wasn't that good (of course I can really only write fiction ;-)) Not that someone in hollywood would know more about the subject. maybe if they have some real hackers there to ensure that everything is correct. Incorrect information is the *worst* thing that you can do to a movie (go see wing commander, the guy needs a crash course in astronomy). Anyone seen the movie hackers? I refuse to watch a movie that incorrectly labeles hackers and shows them as evil genuses(sp?) not script kiddies.

    I think that Gates knows that people hate him, but that is *not* how you make your customers trust you. M$ is saying that they helped create the internet, hmm, Big Brother said that he created the airplane (I never should have read 1984, now I'm parinoid)

    I like linux, but yeah, It's not too user friendly yet. Whenever someone sees Gnome and says "that's copied off of windoze" I say "yeah, and Windoze copied off OS/2 and OS/2 copied off apple and they copied of of Xerox", oh well. Now all of you who are putting up M$ hate pages: GO WRITE GOOD USER-FRIENDLY CODE AND GIVE THAT 90% AN OPTION THAT THEY WANT!! I'm propably preaching too much myself. so lets go make linux user-friendly.

    Besides, theoreticly M$ is only hiring the best and the brightest. If M$ goes bankrupt tomorrow ($100G, yeah right) those people will still be able to find a very good job (maybe writing *good* software) This is why open source is great, it is impossible to pirate!

    so we come up with a hack that would let you distribute MP3 or MPEG or whatever with a data file that tells the playing software to to play this file and then in five minutes use this file... it should let you delete them all as one as well. and did the minimum system requirements jump on me again, I'm using a 10G hard drive and it's HUGE compared to the 165M hard drive on my 486...

    IMO real open source is where you *first* make it OSS and maybe try to make money off it later. Linux started out as a "small project" Linus wasn't thinking about how he could make money, now later companies like RH or Debian are making money off of it. Sun wants to *first* make money and second get good PR from writing OSS that they get *more* money. IMO the eneny of my enemy is my friend, but not in a grand melee (software *is* every man for himself) I think that Sun is thinking: The enemy of my enemy is a tool to be used and destroyed later... Still, Sun is not IMHO powerful enough to be a real threat (we have to accept some normal competition). M$ is because they have a monopoly. All Linux users and OSS developers should stop worring and pointing fingers and keep writing that great code!

    First they slapped their standard liscence agreement onto corel linux, and now what was he doing? Selling stock based on inside info? IANAL, is this legal? AFAIK if you thing a company will do well (like if your friend works there) then go for it and invest, isn't this the same? Let's have a show of hands, who says we add Corel to the boycott list?

    America seems to be heading that way. "you have the freedom of speech in all forms (speech, press) but you can't export crypto." Assult weapons and knives longer than 5.5" are illegal. There go the first and second amendments. Now we have those 50" screens. all we need is big brother to complete the picture. Wait, Big Brother, Uncle Sam. Now all they need to do is start vaporizing 'unorthradox'(sp) people. Then we will have 1984. My guess? George Orwell undershot the date by ~40 years. Everyone fear 2024!

    Why do I feel like the only teenager who can think for himself? Maybe I *AM* the only teenager who can think for himself. Who else but MTV would try to make it seem cool to be a ha^H^Hcracker. This is even worse than "Mitnick the anti-hacking gerbal". I think that the avarage American Intelegence is halving each 18 months now. OK add MTV to the boycott list (M$, Sun, Blockbuster, etc.). And read the first part of my sig carefully, it seems to fit every story.

    Just because there are x people enrolling in computer science classes dosnt mean that there will be x programers in 5-10 years some will drop out, some will fail, some will not be skilled enough to compete, some will become intrested in other professions and yes some will be plain stupid. Also remember that there will be more jobs and more uses for computers. It will also make good programers even more valubale. And I think that we should still call them 'suits' even if it is not correct, a cable modem is not a modem, but who says 'cable all digital communications periferal' or whatever Many things are no longer correct but still used (see 'yuppy') so why should we use 'its' when 'suit' sounds better?

    Yeah, this is cool especialy for hardware hackers but now instead of a fast celoron with 32MB ram a slow and small hard drive and a 33MHz bus called top of the line computer stores will now say "top-of-the-line super computer" because the last time I checked the definition of a supercomputer was more than one processer. of course who doesn't want 4 K7s running Q3 *drool*

    how many of you are reading this with Netscape? now, how many of you are going to delete Netscape because of this? Thats what I thought. and if you use linux why don't you try Lynx. I'm using it now, it works (after learning a few keystrokes) and loads very fast. only problem is when somebody wants to put up a cute webpage with lots of graphics to waste bandwidth.

    i have considered the idea of a screen that you coyld print data to and write on. Like print out your source code and write on it to fix bugs (not handwriting recognition- the user makes the changes mannually to the file) and stuff. this would be cool if it could become cheap enough (do they already have these?) anyway, im switching brands if anyone trys to advritize on MY milk carton. i know this is off topic but, everyone is talking about the additional garbage. im shure health food stores do this but why dont we get a glass milk carton and refill it (charge like $5 a jar so they wont lose it)

But I like how they try to make oss a disadvantage. oh yeah and the 'retraining cost', yeah, M$ has a monopoly so dont you try to learn something elese because then we'd lose our monopoly.     i want cool computer science classes. im in 8th grade, next semester I have computer programming. they teach you c++: declaring variables, cin, cout, if , maybey for.. thats IT!!. I learned more in one week from a book over the summer

    everyone on /. probably knows the diffrence between 'hack' and 'crack'. Will someone please tell those idiots in the media the diffrence (how many of you have flamed someone for it?) unless they are starting a war on nerds (scary thing is that it doesn't sound so ridiculus(sp?)). don't worry, I considered DARE a good waste of class time, so kids will probably see 'Mitnikc' or whatever as the same.
