I don't know cmdrtaco personally (neither do you would be my guess) but he doesn't seem (to me anyway) like the chap who would try and up the tech stocks he personally invested in through slashdot
I doubt he ever made the explicit connection in his mind, but I'd expect the editor of a major news site to go to great lengths not to even be perceived as dishonorable.
The IPO's and other stock related articles that I read , were in the general interest of the linux/gnu/nerd society (who imho form the most important reader pool of/.).
And the meteoric plunge of the same stocks are not of interest to linux/gnu/nerd society?
Especially when we may be looking at the end of the era of hyperinflated internet stocks? This is not of interest to the tech industry readers of this site?
condemn Rob Malda and call him a liar to his face on his own website
Well the facts speak for themselves. He has reported extensively on IPOs and other stock market affairs in the past, and to claim now eh won't report on the tech stock crash because the stock market is "offtopic and uninteresting" is, simply, lying.
So what? This is Taco's site. The stated purpose of the site is to mention news that interests him and his small group of friends. They don't hide this. It's what the site is about.
You don't get it. I present to you definitions of two very apt words.
Unscrupulous: Taco saying that "I run a major tech news site, I have shares in these companies and I'm going to cover all these IPOs and help buoy their prices up, but I'm going to close my eyes and not report it when they fall."
(Flat out) Lying: Taco saying that "We don't ever cover the stock market. It's offtopic and uninteresting."

Agreed. Va Linux, Caldera, LinuxCare, LinuxOne, Red Hat,etc. IPOs are considered Slashdot worthy (just do a search of the IPOs previously reported on/.). Not to mention ESR boasting about his newly found wealth. But the plunge of the same stocks are considered not Slashdot worthy? At the least, the fortunes of the free software contributors offered stock options in VA Linux and Red Hat would be of great interest.
I think we've a serious case of denial here. Maybe Taco thinks that as long as it isn't posted on Slashdot, it ain't true. Well, reality goes on.
What kind of perceptual experiments did you do to evaluate the perceptual quality of the compression used in Vorbis? Did you conduct your own experiments, or was it perhaps based on previously published work?
No, you don't. You have a Republic... The notion that the U.S. and other "free" countries are democracies was Cold War propaganda.
No, you have a democracy in the sense that it's commonly understood.
To get back on topic, ICANN strikes me a being an oligarchy, a rule by a select few... This is similar to how Communist systems actually ran (i.e. a central "Party"). This is ironic considering how capitalist friendly Dyson's perceived to be.
A dictatorship. The natural state of things when the democratic process is missing.
I suppose that depends on how you define "feminist". There is a difference between philosophy that happens to be written by a woman, and feminist philosophy. I define feminist literature as "glorification of women at the expense of men."
If you choose your definitions well enough, then there's no room for further debate.
I've a friend who's taking a class on Orientalism (how the west perceives the east), and one of the assigned readings is a feminist text on how female authors during the period helped to break down the myth of the orient as a lush paradise of harems. This, I think, is a legitimate contribution by feminism (although there are of course problems).
But I'm not here to praise or even defend feminism; I think there are problems with it. I'm here to point out that your earlier assertion that feminism is about male hating is nonsensical.
There is no question that the most efficient form of government is a benevolent dictatorship.
Well I think there's plenty of question.
Many "geeks" are attracted to the idea of a dictatorship when an acknowledged trusted, smart person is in charge. It feels right; "just let them get some work done, and keep the idiots out of the way!"
Democracy doesn't require that everyone make decisions. That would be silly, since most people don't have the knowledge or ability to do so.
Instead, democracies are set up so that people elect representatives. If the people in charge are supported by the public, if they prefer to have that group of people running things over any other group, then you have a democracy.
So in the context of software "dictatorships", what you have is not a dictatorship, but a democracy i.e. Linus runs the show only because he has the support of the people.
That's why the writing get shriller and shriller every year, because they need to generate as much hatred of men as possible in order keep the power base intact.
You don't seem to have read much feminist literature. Little, if any, feminist works are man hating. The justification for feminist literature is that it is necessary to compensate for what is essentially a male dominated world i.e. that standards works are basically pieces of masculinist literature.
I think this is inadequate, and sure, feminist writings may be prejudiced in their treatment of men and women, but just as you kindly pointed out earlier that misogyny means "woman hating" and not just prejudice in general, similarly neither are feminist works in any way "man hating".
If by putting a Linux person in charge, you mean someone who knows the business and knows Linux (or in general, actually understands the product the company is trying to sell), then there's no arguing with that.
But such people are rare. Given a choice between a passionate Linux advocate and someone with experience running a company, I'd pick the latter any day.
You know, I almost wish that you're right, that there's a massive conspiracy by Taco/Andover/VA Linux to censor Slashdot. If that were the case, things would be easy to fix: Taco would see that what's happening will do more harm than good in the long run, and things can be changed.
But it's worse than that. The problems arise from plain human incompetence:
Clueless, uninformed moderators who don't bother reading the article in question before moderating ("moderate first, read later!"), moderate up posts that are plain wrong, or let their human biases show.
Add to that boring editors who on top of not being able to spell or write, pointlessly editorialize in article postings, using/. as their own personal soapboxes.
Don't forget the boring posters. You know, the people who keep posting on Slashdot. The regular posters are really boring (myself included). It was interesting at first, but the same old boring viewpoints just seem to get rehashed over and over.
Who are these mystical "Linux people" that you speak of who know Linux and know how to run a business? You don't want a "Windows person" in charge of a company that makes a Windows product, so why do you think getting a "Linux person" to run a Linux company would be a good idea?
What were your claims? That you thought Andrew Tanenbaum didn't know what the GPL required?
You didn't bother reading his post carefully before attacking him on Slashdot. You got things wrong. You could have done the right thing by admitting your mistake - instead, you're changing your tune, and calling people who pointed out your mistake trolls, just because they're anonymous. This is very lame.
What he doesn't get is that you do not have to include the source code with the binaries
What makes you think he thinks this? This is what he says: "The manufacturer of, say, a watch might really not want to provide a CD-ROM with the source code with each watch or even a web site with the source code, as being too much trouble. "
Saying that classes exist is not the same as saying that people are different - "class" implies a division among people. Differences among people does not imply that a class system exists. The idea of "class" is a purely ideological one, and not based on any intrinsic reality.
If you treat people from different classes well, then that's fine. But the original poster has problems with this.
Exactly! If it weren't for the tauntings and beatings of the jock class and the humiliations of the cheerleader class, geeks could continue their work improving society to pay for the useless jock and cheerleader drones who sponge off our work.
Don't attack the results of the behaviour, get to the root of the behavioural problems. Geeks don't kill people - Jocks cause Geeks to kill people...
I can hardly believe I'm reading this here. The problem arises not from Jocks or Geeks but from the very destructive idea of classes. Stop thinking of people in terms of Jocks or Geeks or Classes, stop looking for divisions between people, treat them and respect them as individuals, and the world will be a much better place.
Well if your users dont have the necessary JVM, bundle it in the installation program.
The software is downloadable over the internet, so we want to minimize to download time required. The Java 2 JRE is 6mbs I believe, not an insignificant download.
But whatever you do, move your GUI's up to Swing. Regardless of Swing's memory footprint(which isn't really a problem IMHO), AWT alone leaves a lot to be desired.
AWT does most of what we want to do fine at the present, so there isn't much reason to move to Swing.
I've been developing a cross platform application using Java (Plug: try it at http://www.guardbot.com).
We use JBuilder 3 for development. However, we actually plugged in the libraries from JBuilder 1 because JBuilder 3 requires Swing (while JBuilder 1 uses the AWT), but we felt that we couldn't require that our users have Java 2. We also wrote an exe wrapper which searches for an installed JVM and executes our software, so that Windows users can start up our software just by double clicking on the exe.
I'm not too sure whether Java is really the best way to proceed. If your users don't have the necessary JVMs, you're limiting your user base, and there are compatibility problems with older JVMs which may cause more problems.

Something very wrong and smelly is going on here. Looks at the posts by ACs marked as trolls in this article:

/.
AC posts link to Stock Market stories on
AC asks: if stock market stories are offtopic, why do all the Linx IPO stories appear on
This one here
And many more. Go read them. Don't let Slashdot hide them.
2 conclusions:
1. Slashdot moderators are idiots.
2. Rob Malda has a lot of moderator points

WTF is this a troll? The truth is being said, plainly and directly.
P.S. How many moderator points does Rob Malda get?

There is a difference between feminist literature, and literature written by women.
Why do you persist in making unsubstantiated claims? You clearly have no clue but plenty of misconceptions about feminist writing. What a misogynist*.
