As distribution is not very user friendly. For production machines is not the best choice but for learning how GNU/linux works it's great. When you make a smooth ubuntu/fedora/mandriva install you might not have a problem but when you achieve a gentoo install, you learn. The same goes for daily use. I stoped using gentoo because the lack of time (for compiling) but since I use ubuntu, I dont learn so much. At least FreeBSD let choose between binary and building form source.
