The related issue is that if an abused customer leaves silently, no one else has the chance to learn of the incident to prevent it from happening again. Fighting for causes carries the price of exposure, and is not to everyone's taste. Hence, this story.

The famous phrase "give the customer the freebie and get them to quiet down" is because raucous customers can potentially galvanize the larger customer base into a unifieed action.

Come on guys, this has to be flawed.

Every multi-million dollar business in the world can scrounge up $2000 in loose change in the vending machines (to use a figure of speech) to pay a leser known lawyer who needs work to block out three days of his time.

All the counsel had to do is get past the first couple of sessions, and the facts of this case are simple.

The lawyer would hear the initial charge, file a couple motions, get through another couple of early duties, then call a management meeting to assess.

That would buy enough time to do a call to arms if the entertainment counsel started pulling fast ones.

Anything at all is better than not showing up.

  19. Re:Career Tracks, Salaries & Equality on No Gap Found In Math Abilities of Girls, Boys · · Score: 1

Okay, this article discussion is getting tricky, but you found a piece of the answer. Here's my view.

In America, women take different social tracks from birth which lead them away from technical pursuits more often than not. This operates at a holistic national level that is easily supported by anecdotal evidence.

Of the girls who decide to go into a technical path of life, and get the necesary education, then that subset of resulting women on average likely raw talents on par with the overall pool of average men who also go down technical paths of life.

Then when it comes to navigating the organizational dynamics, there are indeed some political factors affecting the hiring placement of women candidates. There are also political factors affecting the assignment of pay packages.

In organizations whereupon policy has negated the petty politics, then that small subset of cases should see the women both performing and being paid on a par with men.

  22. Re: GOTO on Best and Worst Coding Standards? · · Score: 1

The only dabble in non-web programming I ever did was fiddle with Commodore Basic as a child. I suppose I was lucky enough to stumble upon one early article somewhere advising against the worst excesses of "Gordian-Sphagetti" code. I understood that as far as it went, and made some efforts to keep a simple enough main program and put the subroutines to the heavy work.

However, I never did understand how to write an entire program without a GOTO statement, because depending upon certain condition checks, it became time to restart the program at some point in the process.

The best I was able to manage was something like eight-ish GOTO statements per 1000 line programs.

I'll be looking to write some tiny widgety programs in the future, and I don't see why having a few GOTO statements is the total kiss-of-the-ZombieCode. I have no interest in pro-level programming.
