"It's one thing for a commenter at Slashdot to call someone an idiot. It's another thing when some freeper or someone at LGF says a certain congressman deserves "two in the back of the head" or fantasizes about the immolation of muslim women and children."
Fantasize all you want! If you advocate illegal actions you can be held responsible for that advocation. If you provoke someone to illegal actions by your words, you may well be held responsible. That's a very gray line. You choose the luck of your draw with the judge and jury.
I would never advocate "illegal" actions...unless our government requires an overthrow due to their inability to follow our constitution. We aren't quite there yet...in my opinion. Others have disagreed due to; views of violation of our constitutional rights, abortion rights, homosexual rights...whatever.
True patriots look at the whole US as a function of the US Constitution. There is a tipping point for the general populace. We obviously aren't there yet, although the huge gains by the Democratic party point to a significant unhappiness.
Because of free speech we have the ability to promote change. We can hope that our next president will better represent the public...though I feel the one best able to win funds will be elected. But even if the worst candidate wins, the naysayers will be heard. If they are shut down by the new administration, revolution is possible. That's the American way. Hell, that's the way of the world.
Thanks for a truly insightful post. I saw what I believed to be trend and posted sort of tongue in cheek...actually expecting to be killed karma-wise, thus, emphasizing my point. Notice my nick...
I personally believe that we are completely fucking over our ecosystem in many ways. Global warming caused by our energy generation and material production systems is most likely going to drastically change our world. It kills me that there is such a vocal opposition to global warming based on "it's only a theory". How can otherwise intelligent folks embrace Darwin's theory of evolution yet shun global warming theory? To me the evidence is just as obvious in both cases. Rape the seas, put CO2 into the atmosphere, use up all of the non-renewable resources...what's the difference?
This is a system someone thought would not be attacked. Someone was obviously wrong. All systems need to be considered as targets and protected as best they can. There is always a trade off of security versus accessibility but I don't see that as the problem in this case. They went cheap, quick, and dirty and put a system into place where security was a minor concern at best.
"Okay, how many of us get our water from "glacier melt for fresh water"?"
Tell that to the folks in Colorado, California, and at least several other states. A lot of them get their drinking water from snow melt. While that's not the same as glaciers, I think the principle applies.
"Good point. But when you get right down to it, the name "alshithead" doesn't inspire much confidence either."
You're the first person I've noticed who has brought up my nick. Actually it's an inside joke among some old friends and I had difficulty finding a sign in for Slashdot. As a final influence on the name, I tend to often play the devil's advocate so I figured there might be some folks here who would find that name appropriate.
"On the same note, there are no news stories on the glaciers that are growing. And yea, a surprising number are. More are shrinking, of course, but worldwide the change is *far* less then any single glacier or group of glaciers that makes the news."
Actually, I have seen news reports of a VERY small number of glaciers growing. I attribute that to the fact that major climate change the world over will indeed cause minor local anomalies. Just as parts of New York state got their typical entire winter's snowfall in the last week or so, Alaska is still seeing unprecedented warmth and come spring the swarms of insects will continue to move north of their historical range.
Why is it that only anonymous cowards tend to disclaim global warming? ALL of the most recent observations of really important glaciers (read as heavily utilized) tend to point to the fact that most of them are disappearing at a scary rate. If you rely on glacier melt for fresh water, you are most probably fucked...next year, 5 years, 25 years down the road, it doesn't matter. The time frame is debatable. The end result isn't.
How can any educated person deny that we have seriously affected our world ecosystem? Species are going extinct everywhere, local climates are fluctuating wildly, and I sure as hell won't be buying any land that is close to our current sea level.
We don't understand the world or even local climate science in enough depth. Our actions seem to be causing changes that are mostly unpredictable. Just because we can't categorically prove it doesn't mean that we aren't the cause. The predictions I see as most reasonable are actually some of the worst case scenarios.
"People who advocate the killing of other human beings should be banned off this board, plain and simple."
Ban who you want from YOUR board. I think the Slashdot folks will just ignore those we disagree with. I fully embrace anyone's ability to express their opinion. I just as fully embrace everyone's right to ignore others' opinions.
"$260 million over 30 years, with 210 jobs means each job created is valued at creating at least $41,269 per year for the states economy. If the employees are making twice that, it it attracts other companies to the area, plus you factor in the value for the local economy having the data centre there provides, it most likely makes very very good financial sense."
You obviously don't know the area. There is NOTHING left. The furniture and textile plants are all gone. I can guarantee that Google won't be paying $80,000 to folks who monitor climate control or even servers. You won't get a job in Charlotte (70 miles away!), a MUCH bigger market, for $80 grand without taking on significant management or other duties. Sys admins, programmers, and other tech folks are a dime a dozen with Bank of America and Wachovia farming functionality out overseas. Especially now, Bank of America just dumped a couple of hundred folks (contract and regular employees) in the last couple of months. Maybe the construction folks in this very rural community get an initial burst in building the data center, MAYBE the local HVAC folks get a new contract. However, there is no long term benefit to the locals in any way whatsoever.
I'm not a Linus fan boy. But, I have to say that if the work he is submitting is worth bringing in, there will be hell to pay for ignoring it. It's not like some l33t t33n trying to horn in. He has a history and following. We're not talking about some novice.
"Well, to be blunt. Google does consume a ton of power overall; not per machine. Their current stock of production machines have ~200 watt power supplies. That isn't much; but you stack 22,000 in a data center, that is a lot of wattage."
"I've wondered why most A/C units for buildings seem to rely on radiating heat via waste air. There must be a decent use for that heat nearby (at least in densely populated areas). Find a pool that needs heating, or help run the hot water tanks, or create a public hot shower or something!"
Great idea! But, practically speaking they are not put into place in most current cases. The piping, controls, and maintenance don't make the venture FINANCIALLY sound in our current schema. If your (and many others') ideas had been implemented from the ground up 50 years ago, we might be in a better place now. The problem is that folks from yesteryear didn't look at conserving every erg generated. That's why it's called "WASTE heat". The best example is the internal combustion engine. It takes way too many sub-systems to function...cooling, electrical, lubrication, etc. If we had looked at conservation as a rule 50 or 100 years ago, there are many appliances/applications that would be VASTLY more efficient and/or could power other uses.
Considering the fact that Google invaded North Carolina for a data center employing ~200 folks and gets to escape property taxes and other state taxes for up to thirty years...they seem to be on a pretty sound business model. I can't imagine their radio business will fail considering the effectiveness of their other efforts. All it takes is money and they have plenty of that.
"In January, Google announced it would build the computer center and bring up to 210 jobs in four years to Lenoir, a community 70 miles northwest of Charlotte hurting from the collapse of its furniture industry. In exchange, Caldwell and state officials approved incentives that could be worth more than $260 million over 30 years."
Incredible, 200 jobs gets them incentives worth $260 million over 30 years? Hell, they even got the elected county officials out there to help buy up the properties for their data center. The whole thing stinks on way too many levels. I guess I can rule out getting a job with them.:)
"Using distributed computing to find molecular cures or the shape a protein will fold into as it comes out of the business end of a ribosome is all well and good, but if you can find a shape on the political map that concentrates all left-wingers into little ghetto-districts and gives solid 55% majorities to right-wingers across all the other ones, and you can deliver this IT solution around the time of the 2010 reapportionment, the Bush Administration has a no-bid contract with your name on it."
Did you have to go to politics with this? We all know that G.W. is a moron and only a shade of intelligence compared to his father. Republicans suck, Democrats suck, and Libertarians don't suck as bad only because they can hardly get elected. The US (and most other countries) are ruled by the few that have the wealth. Corporate welfare rules. No one who can make a difference gives a shit about the environment or global warming and we are all going to hell in hand basket. The ones who do care can't make a difference unless they sell their souls in order to get elected. How the hell does politics come into your equation for this story?
When you consider global warming...malaria WILL become a huge problem for many areas that haven't had to worry about it before now. This is in no way a waste. Buy your quinine now and while you're doing it...buy stock in the companies that manufacture it.

And, let's not forget that copper is so expensive that morons are electrocuting themselves trying to steal live lines.

Is that a lot of wattage or a lot of kilowattage?

You fucking moron..."One is LED to believe"...unless you are made of a very heavy element.
