I haven't used e-smith (www.e-smith.com), but it is a full web based server solution ala cobalt RaQs, and all open source, bring your own hardware (BYOH).
Zope (www.zope.org) is another option, but that involves using zope through and through, which may or may not affect your customers.
We had a 2600 router and a PIX 520 doing the vpn thing in the USA, but I can't think of why you couldn't do that in Europe. We had to up the RAM in the router, and could only get about 512kbs until we saturated the router, which is not good if you're actually trying to route at the same time.
You can also get coffee makers that drip into carafes, so you can make a big pot, and it won't go bad sitting on the burner. Make two - when one's out, the other is full. National Vendors makes coffee machines, but I'm not sure if you can buy them direct or if you have to use a service. They also make espress machines for single serving. They make a decent beverage, but it isn't quite barista made espresso.
Black holes are not a vacuum, they are the opposite. They are similar to neutron stars in that they are very dense, only more so. The state of the matter is unknown, AFAIK, but it is certainly not atomic - i.e. atoms or neutrons. They can have size, but I don't see a way to measure the size - perhaps by the radiation that is emmitted. The surface you refer to is the event horizon.
You need to do what you are passionate about. If you are passionate about feeding the poor, go feed the poor. If you are passionate about building IT and technology infrastructure, go do it! If you are passionate about feeding the poor and go build IT and technology infrastructure, you will be less effective to the whole of society. If you want to take over the world...
We use linux for an intranet test box, but decided the production box should be NT for the simple reason that our IT staff is not situated to support linux. They don't have the skill sets, and it doesn't make sense (yet) to learn a new OS and how to care for it for this one application. We'll see how NT behaves, as the intranet is brand new, and if there are problems due to NT, then we may consider linux or some UNIX variant. Until then, we use what IT knows how to use, because I certainly do not want to support the server long term. As a coworker said to me, at least the IT group is open... minded.
Try Freesco . This will give you a single floppy linux with a web gui, telnet, passive DNS (v4), and DHCP capabilities. None of these are very flexible, especially the routing side - get LRP if you want flexibility.
Mine is running on a 486, no probs. Our LRPs at work run P100 full 100mbps, so I assume a freesco on a P100 will be similar.
