TFA said "The list _could_ include Slashdot, which permits public profiles; Amazon, which allows author profiles and personal lists; and blogs like RedState.com that show public profiles." Basically any site that has public profiles that could let sickos search out young kids. I doubt/. would be blocked though because there is a "public terminal" option during login. You can also read/post/. without having a user account.
The best approach is to see what actually gets blocked. This could be a good thing or it could be used to censor. I am taking a "wait and see" approach.
There are many reasons why restricting sites at the library is a good idea. Our tax dollars pay for those computers, the connection, etc. Do you want your tax dollars going to some pervert looking at pr0n in the library? Do you want your tax dollars going to help poor kids be "cool" on myspace? I have an idea. Maybe while the middle class and rich kids are wasting time on myspace,/., etc. the poor kids can be using the computers at the library to LEARN. Then, they can get an education and a real job and no longer be poor.
You say you were a "former poor kid". How did you stop being poor? Did you learn to make money from sitting in a library using myspace? Or did you get an education and better yourself?
I have no problem with my tax dollars going to help those with less. However, I would have a major problem with my tax money being wasted to let poor kids sit on myspace all day and post crap.
Don't take $10 from my hand and tell me it is to help the poor. Then at the end of the day when I ask "How did you help the poor with my $10?" you say, "well, little Jimmie got to IM his girlfriend and surf myspace for 4 hours!". What I want to hear is that my $10 gave little Jimmie access educational material. Would you rather give a poor man a fish or teach him how to fish for himself?
I don't want to sound like a parrot, however your point is spot-on. If this were a Firefox vuln. it would affect FF on Linux and Mac. However, it only affects Microsoft Windows users.
From www.mozillazine.org
Downloader-AXM is distributed as a Windows executable attached to a spoof email purporting to be a order confirmation message from Wal-Mart. However, McAfee say that they have also seen attempts to install FormSpy using the three-year old VBS/Psyme exploit in Microsoft Internet Explorer.
If anything, this sounds like a flaw in Microsoft products. If I wrote a Trojan that got in through IE or via an Outlook email attachment that goes and blows up Photoshop CS, would it be a Photoshop CS vuln. or a Microsoft vuln.?
The sad thing is that there are a lot of Joe Users out there that bought a computer with Win XP home on it (non-sp2) and they have no firewall and no automatic updates. So exactly how is Joe Users supposed to know about updates? I thought Microsoft Windows XP "Just Works"? It sounds like Microsoft Windows XP "Just Works" only if you are computer savvy, a corporate end user with sysadmins to keep systems updated or stay on a 1 year upgrade cycle. Mac and every major Linux distro has automatic updates on out of the box and have had it this way for a few years. I guess the only Windows XP users that have a somewhat safe and updated computer are those that recently purchased a new computer with SP2. Though those systems still put all users in the Administrator group by default so I don't know if even buying the "latest and greatest" from MS helps.
People getting arrested didn't make American what it is today. Exactly what do you _think_ America is today? She is a shadow of her former self. Don't give me crap about "conviction". I joined the United States Marine Corps back in 1991 _during_ the Gulf "War". I was patriotic and wanted to fight for my nation. The years since then I have lost all faith in the government. Corruption is the only thing the republican and democratic parties have left to offer our nation.
Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Pendleton Gaines, however, did leave the way open for the Libertarian Party to sue the Commission on Presidential Debates, which organises the TV contests, as well as the two major parties.
American democracy is fine
No it is not. Go ahead and live in your dream world where every American is either Left or Right, Republican or Democrat. Sorry, that is not democracy in my book.
the Libertarian & Green parties, on the other hand....
As opposed to the democrats or republicans who pass draconian laws to "protect" me from "terrorists" and keep our nation in constant war? Can you name one decade during the last 50 years that American has not been involved in some war or conflict?
Clearly, being barred from participating in a meaningless debate
What!?!? It is illegal! Exactly how are the American people supposed to hear your position when you are not given the same opportunities as the other candidates?
"A majority of Americans say that I should be included in the events sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates," says Badnarik, 50, of Austin, Texas. "And the CPD, as a non-profit, has received special treatment from government on the requirement that they be non-partisan in their activities. Bi-partisan is not non-partisan."
"Unless I am allowed to participate, the debates become a massive campaign contribution to two of the candidates, illegal under the very campaign finance laws those two candidates have passed and signed as Senator and President."
That is why everyone should use USENET. You only _download_ and no copyright infringement has occurred since you are not doing any distribution of copyrighted works!
And get arrested? This past presidential election there were actually _4_ presidential candidates. Michael Badnarik the candidate for the Libertarian party, and David Cobb the candidate for the Green party were both arrested when they showed up for the debate. Some democracy, eh? The democrats and republicans want to keep their duopoly going and will use any nasty means possible.
Not being IT I'm not certain on this, but isn't there a means of pushing application updates automatically for normal business applications?
There are many ways. Firefox has its own built-in update so corporate admins don't need to worry about Firefox. However, there are also other approaches like using Bigfix which can do app deployment and patching. It can even do it for Linux. The admins where I work use Bigfix and it seems like a pretty good product.
Actually, the article said "four-megabit Mram chips". 4 Mbits is a lot smaller than 4 MB. 4 Mbits is 4,000,000 bits. There are 8 bits in a byte. 4,000,000 / 8 = 500,000 bytes. So these chips are just about 512 KB. Yup, that is _very_ small:-). Not even one picture from my digital camera would fit on this chip!
This shouldn't be an issue. See, when you build a plugin, you build to a specific API.
I think the GP was referring to an upgrade of MS Office with new features in the document format that the plugin doesn't know about. So yes, an upgrade can certainly break a conversion plugin. While the plugin may load without issues in the next version of MS Office (because of the API), the plugin may still puke when it tries to convert some new feature in the next MS Office version that it does not know about.
Microsoft really wants people to use _their_ format, either the closed proprietary format or the new "open" proprietary format that is patent encumbered and will have undocumented binary blobs dropped in XML and prevent Open Source implementations.
Why can't MS just work with a stinkin open document format? If the current open doc format doesn't have all the features that MS Office wants/needs, then MS can expand the spec and work _with_ the open format instead of against it.
Microsoft's responsibility to society is satisfied every April 15th.
Are you referring to Microsoft paying taxes? Microsoft cheats society out even paying their fair share of taxes. Here is a/. article about it. Just Google and you will see how nasty a company Microsoft is and the junk they do to not pay a fair share of taxes. Bill Gates said Open Source was "un-American". I on the other hand think not paying a _fair_ share of taxes is what is really un-American.
People wonder why there is so much animosity toward Microsoft. For me it is not about their products or the majority of their hard working employees. It is Microsoft's never ending corporate greed and unethical actions. These actions are directed by the few "executives" at the top of the company. Replace them with decent executives (do they even exist?) and maybe in a generation or so, a lot the anti-Microsoft sentiment will decrease.
If MS did what you suggested, the EU could flip MS the bird and release their own OS based on the SOURCE CODE that MS has given to governments and universities. The EU could setup their own little company to start learnig the code base, publish security fixes etc. Heck, they could lure in some MS programmers with nice bonus packages and get them to move to the EU to continue working on the MS code base that has now been released into the public domain in the EU.
MS would never be able to do what you suggest, it would destroy them. Companies around the world would be dropping MS real fast if they saw MS would just pull support rather then comply with a court order.
There is also the financial reason for MS to not do what you suggest. I don't know the true numbers, but I am sure the MS makes more per day from the EU than the 2$ million fine.
Seriously, if you are doing a good amount of OSS work, setup a corporation. It is very cheap to get a coporate license. Then you have all the copyrights assigned to that copmany. If someone tries to sue you, they can only go after the company. The company has no real assests, so what will the patent trolls gain?
Use the corrupted corporate systems to fight the corrupted corporate systems.
It boggles my mind that something like this can go on. Have you seen the patent for swinging on a swing? How the hell does something like that make it through the USPTO? (Patent 6,368,227 if you're interested) The entire patent systems needs an overhaul...
It gets even better. How about a patent on computer solitaire? Yup, the patent system works really well!
This is non-news. Good for Microsoft, they made a business desision to buy hardware capible of serving the needs that they have. Whoopity-Do it runs Linux.
No, it is news. Microsoft has basically trashed Linux over the years. Lied about Linux and just spread a lot of FUD. Microsoft has never once said that Linux is capable of _anything_ and basically claimed that Linux is just a "toy" or a "hobby" OS. And yet, here is Microsoft buying a superior solution based on Linux. There are plenty of other offerings out there. Why didn't Microsoft buy one of them? Maybe because Microsoft wanted to by one of the best solutions and that solution is based on Linux. It makes all of Microsoft's claims out to be big fat lies. It discredits any "study" Microsoft has done or will do IMO. I find it very ironic that one of the best solutions is based on Linux. The same Linux that Microsoft has claimed for years is total crap. And now Microsoft is spending tons of cash on a very large total Linux solution.
That having been said, every update that comes out is causing a noticeable decrease in initial load time.
Ditto for my wife's laptop. The only thing seems to be to do a base install of WinXP with your main apps and your personal files. Then make some type of image and ever so many weeks, wipe it clean and put your good image back on. Or use a Mac or Linux.
I run Ubuntu Linux on my main desktop. Ubuntu has something like 10,000+ applications in its repository. While I haven't tried that many, I have certainly installed more than 1,000 and uninstalled a lot of apps too. Unlike with windows, I have never had my Ubuntu Linux system slow down because too much installing and uninstalling.
As for Firefox, try to create a new profile with no plugins and see how long it takes for it to start up. It _should_ be pretty snappy, even on older systems.
IE was *more* standards compliant than Netscape, had *more* features
Your crazy. IE had _zero_ features then and still has zero features today. The only feature I can think of that IE has is basic bookmarking. Seriously, what elese can IE do out of the box? It can sort of connect to FTP, though it has never done that very well IMO. What are these "features" of IE that you talk about? IE is just a very, very, very basic web browser.
This is widely acknowledged
By whom? You? Do you have any references to back up this claim? Certainly if it was "widely acknowledged" that IE had such great features and was more W3C standards compliant, there has to be vast amounts of documents on the web to validate your statement.
so just stop the revisionism
Huh? I am talking in the present tense. Where in my post was I talking about the DOJ trial? Get a clue man.
The best approach is to see what actually gets blocked. This could be a good thing or it could be used to censor. I am taking a "wait and see" approach.
